Boys Swimming: Nawn notches pool record in Penncrest’s win

Philip Nawn is already roaring into midseason form.

The Penncrest All-Delco wasn’t just content with holding the school record in the 200 freestyle. Instead, he took down a 14-year-old pool record with his time of 1:48.93, edging the previous best of 1:50.44, to help the Lions beat Springfield, 97-83, in a Central League meet Thursday.

Nawn also conquered the field in the 500 freestyle and was also a factor in Penncrest’s winning 200 medley relay team. Joining him on that team, among others, was Dan Rosenberger, who also won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly.

Springfield’s Brian Layden crushed the field in the diving competition with his score of 208.14, which was nearly 21 points better than his nearest competitor.

Girls Swimming: Rudy guides Ridley with two district-qualifying times

Ridley freshman Gabrielle Rudy met automatic district-qualifying mandates in three events and secured wins in four as the Green Raiders coasted past Upper Darby, 108-77, Wednesday in a Central League girls swimming meet.

Rudy’s finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.20), 50 freestyle (24.72) and the Raiders’ 200 medley relay (1:53.60) were good enough for the District One Championships meet’s standards. The ninth-grader also swam to a win in the 200 freestyle.

Kiera Wadsworth and Allison Cardow, Rudy’s teammates in the medley relay, had a pair of individual wins apiece. Wadsworth won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, automatically qualifying for districts in both, and Cardow touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley.

Ridley's Allison Cardow swam to a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley in Wednesday's meet with Upper Darby. (Julia Wilkinson)

Girls Basketball: Marple Newtown bends but doesn’t break in win

NEWTOWN SQUARE — Marple Newtown saw its seemingly comfortable lead against Springfield dissipate and eventually the Tigers found themselves down by one point in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars, faced with a double-digit deficit, wouldn’t go away quietly.

And then Rylee Power and Carley Hamilton took over.

The Tigers relied on their top juniors to lift them to a 46-39 victory. Power scored a game-high 23 points. Her biggest basket came with three minutes left in regulation, draining a 3-pointer to put the Tigers ahead to stay.

The 6-2 Hamilton, who could get a double-double in her sleep, secured 11 rebounds, including four in the fourth quarter, to go with 15 points. Power, meanwhile, netted 13 points in the second half and dished out five assists.

“We played better defense and our offense started to click (in the fourth quarter),’ Riley Power said. “It was close.’

The Tigers (3-1, 2-0) have won three straight games in close fashion. Wednesday night, they needed overtime to claim a 55-50 decision over Penncrest. All three of their wins have come by seven points or fewer.

“We’re 2-0 now and we’re definitely starting to feel more confident,’ Power said.

But will it ever get easy for the Tigers, who are looking like Central League playoff contenders this year (albeit after only one week and two league games)?

They went cold for roughly half the game, as they were outscored in the second and third quarters, 22-16, but that deficit seemed much worse than six points. Springfield ramped up its defensive effort after it was torched in the first quarter, when it trailed by as many as 13 points.

Boys Basketball: Hanna celebrates return to hoops with win for Penncrest

ETHER PROVIDENCE — Drew Hanna’s summer wasn’t nearly as eventful as he would have liked.

This was supposed to be the summer he was going to use to get fully acclimated to running the Penncrest offense as the heir apparent to Eddie Baxter as the Lions’ point guard. Instead, Hanna was relegated to simply relaxing and trying to stay away from contact sports.

Hanna lacerated his spleen in the last game of the lacrosse regular season last spring and had to sit out the Lions’ two playoff games, then had to bide his time until basketball season was around the corner. He’s back and fully healthy, and as he showed in Friday night’s 70-38 rout of Chichester at the Media Shootout at Strath Haven, he can be a more than capable replacement for Baxter.

“It was a little rough,’ said Hanna, who had four points and did a top-notch job of running Mike Doyle’s offense. “I had to sit out over the summer and I missed a lot of play. Once I got back into it, got back into playing with the team, it’s fairly easy playing with these guys who can shoot and we’ve got big guys inside. I just do the passing, they do the scoring. It’s pretty easy for me.’

It didn’t hurt Penncrest (1-0) or Hanna that Ben Casanova showed up in style in the third quarter. With the Lions nursing a 26-19 halftime lead over the Eagles (0-1), Casanova erupted, scoring all 13 of his points in the third frame. Against a lineup long on speed, but very much short on size, Casanova bullied his way to the paint and couldn’t be tamed. His frontcourt running mate, Rahmi Halaby, was even better, putting forth an 18-point, six-rebound, five-assist effort.

“Coach Doyle just talked to me at halftime, got me fired up and told me I’m better than I was playing,’ Casanova said. “I knew I could play better than I did in the first half. (Getting early touches) was absolutely big for me. Coach Doyle told me he was going to give me the ball and he told me I was part of the offense, so I needed to start scoring.’

That worked out well. Chichester put up a fight for a while, buoyed by Derrick Welles’ 11-point night and seven points from both Jamai Womack and freshman Eric Montanez, but ultimately, the Lions’ frontcourt battered and bruised the Eagles to the point of no return.

Given his team’s talent up front and a heady point guard, Doyle would be wise to keep using that strategy.
