Softball: Springfield has the confidence of a state champion

SPRINGFIELD — What happens when the team that won the only PIAA softball championship in Delaware County history returns the next season? There must be a ton of pressure to live up to those lofty expectations, right?

Not at Springfield, where the Cougars are ready to begin the long road back to the top. While coach Todd Odgers said goodbye to some valuable departing seniors, including All-Delco Lauren Scarpato and Kaity Baumann, the Cougars have an air of confidence that comes with being reigning state champs. The team that went 23-4 last spring doesn’t plan on being distracted.

The PIAA spring sports season begins Friday, although the threat of inclement weather could put a damper on opening day. The Cougars are scheduled to play a nonleague game at Kennett. For All-Delcos Courtney Scarpato and Tori DePietro, Springfield’s lethal 1-2 punch as pitchers and shortstops, the song remains the same: Go out and prove yourself all over again.

Baseball: Penncrest is ready to grind it out

MIDDLETOWN — Through an endless winter that has scarcely allowed most baseball teams on their fields even after their seasons are supposed to have started, Penncrest’s anticipation hasn’t waned.

There have been workouts, mornings in the weight room, attention devoted nearly seven days a week through the frigid toil of winter. And there’s been a refrain to reflect the mindset that has accompanied all that work.

“We love it,’ senior pitcher Rob Brown said. “Our motto is, ‘˜embrace the grind.’ We work day after day to get better.’

This spring has been the subject of years of hopeful expectation for Penncrest, which returns eight starters from a squad that made the District One Class AAAA tournament a season ago before losing in the first round to eventual champion Methacton. That number includes the top three pitchers in their arsenal and essentially the entire lineup.

The Lions hope that advantage is perpetuated by the way the team has worked through the offseason. Voluntary workouts were organized by the players around three times a week. There was more time in the weight room. Coupled with the fact that the core of the team has been together on the field for years and the players spend much of their time off of it together, and the chemistry that they hope will underpin a successful spring is well established.

Haverford High School’s Shane Moran is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

A sophomore, Moran scored the game-winning goal with two minutes left in the Central League championship final. One day earlier, he tallied the game-winning goal in double overtime to defeat Garnet Valley in the Central League championship semifinal.

Moran missed the first half of the season with a fractured femur in his knee cap. Haverford head coach John Povey said, “The speculation was that he had a very small chance to return for this season, but he rehabbed extremely hard to be able to return in the beginning of January. His determination to return for this season really helped [us] claim the Central League title.’

Main Line Media News: You scored the game-winning goal against Ridley with two minutes left in the Central League championship final. Can you describe the unfolding of the play, and your role in it?

Shane Moran: I had just got onto the ice on a line change. Joe, my [older] brother, was circling behind the net, and he passed the puck out in front. I shot it into the top left corner of the net.

Swimming: Marple Newtown’s Truax makes the cut in 100 breaststroke

Leaving La Salle University Friday afternoon, Marple Newtown junior Johnny Truax knew he’d given himself a shot.

He’d just swum a personal-best time in the 100 breaststroke at 59.93 seconds, his first time under the vaunted minute mark. He’d placed eighth in the District One Class AAA Championships, earning a medal and a spot on the cusp of state qualification in the recent past. All he could do was wait.

Sunday, Truax got the answer he was looking for, earning the 16th and final at-large bid to the PIAA Championships.

Wrestling: Cronin dazzles on his way regional title

OXFORD — Out in the far reaches of western Pennsylvania, there is a wrestler who carries a national reputation. His name is Spencer Lee and as a freshman at Franklin Regional High School in 2014, he compiled a record of 49-0 and won the PIAA Class AAA championship at 120 pounds. In Lee’s exceptional career, which will likely lead him to a Division I scholarship and beyond, only one person has pinned him: Upper Darby’s Colin Cronin.

“I honestly don’t know how I beat him,’ Cronin said with a laugh. He was in fourth grade when he earned the one-of-a-kind win. “It happened a long time ago.’

Cronin may not have the notoriety of Lee, but he’s pretty good in his own right. At the PIAA Class AAA Southeast Regional Tournament Saturday at Oxford Area High School, Cronin claimed the 132-pound title with an 11-2 major decision over Josh Stillings of Pennridge. The Drexel Hill native is Upper Darby’s first regional champ since 2001, when Andy Helms and Joel Edwards each won gold. Edwards added a state championship for good measure, Delco’s only state title since 1974.
