Emma Taylor rewrites Haverford record book

MEDIA — Haverford High senior Emma Taylor didn’t know how close she was to reaching three significant milestones Monday.

First, she broke the school’s all-time strikeout record of 387. Taylor fanned the first hitter she faced.

Next on the to-do list was getting 400 strikeouts, a remarkable achievement when you consider that Taylor was denied her sophomore season in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thirdly, Taylor began the day one win shy of 42, also a school record. The undefeated Fords roasted Penncrest, 16-2, and Taylor notched a strikeout for the final out of the game for career punchout No. 400 and locked down the wins record.

The strikeout and wins records were previously held by All-Delco Bridget Newman, who presented Taylor with a ball to commemorate the special occasion.

Taylor was curious as to why assistant coach Jill Marshall had been looking for a clean ball on which to write “All Time Win Record.”

“I didn’t know. I looked over to Ms. Marshall and I saw she was dumping the balls out of the bucket, wondering what she was doing looking through them and I had no idea what was happening,” Taylor said.

While she will cherish the moment, Taylor is grateful to share another win with her teammates. And the Fords have done plenty of winning this season. Last year’s PIAA Class 6A runners-up, the Fords are off to a scorching 11-0 start.

The stats and achievements are nice, but the Yale-bound Taylor has one priority: winning.

“When I’m pitching I feel like it’s more of a feeling and then obviously just the team atmosphere as a whole is really important,” said Taylor, who is the reigning Daily Times Player of the Year.

Haverford coach Bob Newman joked with Taylor before the season that he didn’t want her to break his daughter Bridget’s records.

“I told her ‘Hey, you’re 10 wins away. When you get to nine, you’re going into centerfield,’” Newman said. “There’s no one better who could’ve broken it. She’s an unbelievable person. She was voted captain as a sophomore, so she’s a three-year captain. And to do this without having a season (in 2020). Starting in November, she’s running our workouts, I didn’t even have to go because she had it all under control. … She’s just an unbelievable kid and leader.”

Taylor mashed a home run in the first inning to give the Fords a 4-0 advantage. From the circle she allowed three hits and one earned run. Riley Signor had the only decent contact when she slugged a solo homer that split the gap in right-center field.

All-Delco Boys Basketball

The following players from the Central League were named to the All Delco Boys Basketball teams.

1st Team

Jackson Hicke, Radnor: For all the exemplary balance that the Raptors showed in a historic season, Hicke was the clear offensive standout. He led the team by averaging 16.5 points per game, one of five starters averaging at least six points per outing and seventh-best in Delaware County this season. But his scoring touch had the game-breaking potential that forced opponents to craft their defenses around him. At 6-5, Hicke is able to create space for himself in the lane, handle the ball while running the point and be a lethal catch-and-shoot option beyond the arc. He led the Raptors to one of the best seasons in program history, with 23 wins, a 14-2 Central League record on the way to the league championship game and a run to the second round of the PIAA Class 5A tournament. Hicke had 12 games of 20 points or more, the pinnacle coming in the first round of states when he steered Radnor past Susquehannock with 38 points in a 75-56 win. He added 21 points in the District 1 Class 5A final, an overtime loss to Chester. He blitzed Conestoga for 27 points and Holy Ghost Prep for 25, part of a 13-0 start to the season for Radnor. A first team All-Central selection by league coaches, Hicke is the first Radnor All-Delco since Glenn Washington in 2005-06.

Nick Colucci, Haverford: The lone senior on this year’s All-Delco team, Colucci got Haverford going on the way to 19 wins, a 13-3 league mark and an appearance in the PIAA Class 6A tournament. Colucci wasn’t the team’s leading scorer – that honor went to junior sharpshooter Googie Seidman at 14.5 points per game – but Colucci was second at 12.3 points per. He inherited the backcourt workhorse role from 1,000-point scorer John Seidman and now inherits the elder Seidman’s All-Delco recognition. Colucci had some of his biggest scoring games early in the season – 27 points in an overtime win over Great Valley, 24 points in beating Council Rock South in December. He settled into a rhythm with a balanced Fords team where his contributions went beyond scoring, orchestrating the offense and drawing one of the tougher defensive assignments. He tallied 18 points in a win at Conestoga in January and 17 in a one-point victory over Springfield. Colucci was voted first-team All-Central by league coaches. He will continue his career at the University of Scranton.

All-Delco Hockey Teams

The following players from the Central League were named to the All Delco Hockey teams.

1st Team

Zach Crain, Springfield: The senior forward is on the All-Delco team for the second consecutive season after reinforcing his status as one of the county’s best playmakers. Crain was second in the county in goals (30), assists (28) and points (58). He was third in points per game at 3.05, leading the Cougars to the top seed in the Central League playoffs and a 17-win season. The Cougars also advanced to the Flyers Cup A final. Crain torched Central League foes, accumulating 47 points in 14 regular-season games (3.35 ppg). He was outstanding in the Flyers Cup, with a hat trick in the 4-1 win over West Chester Henderson and four assists in a 6-1 win over Palmyra. He had three goals and five assists in three Flyers Cup games before falling to West Chester East. He added a hat trick in a crossover game with Cardinal O’Hara.

Josh Peabody, Strath Haven: The senior forward played only 12 games, but he was electric whenever he touched the ice. Peabody scored 26 goals and 35 points, his 2.92 ppg fourth in the county. An excellent skater with a rangy stride and deft hands, Peabody is difficult to slow down once he gets a head of steam. Ridley can attest: Peabody blistered them for four goals and two assists in the opening round of the Central League playoffs, a 7-3 win. He scored all four goals in a 4-3 OT win over Conestoga in his first game of the season in November and hit Penncrest for a pair of hat tricks. Strath Haven was 0-9 in the games he missed, scoring 1.78 goals per game. With him, the Panthers went 6-6, including the Central League playoffs and Flyers Cup, scoring 3.75 goals per game.

Ryan O’Connor, Springfield: Even as injuries befell the Cougars’ goaltending contingent, forcing them to dig three-deep by the postseason, O’Connor made sure Springfield was one of the stingiest teams in the area. The Cougars allowed only 21 goals in 15 Central League games and 37 goals in 21 total games. The defensive displays included a pair of 10-0 wins over Strath Haven, which finished fourth in the league, a 5-0 blanking of third-place Conestoga and two one-goal concessions to start the Flyers Cup. O’Connor, with his massive wingspan, elite defensive instincts and plus-skating ability, was a big reason. O’Connor added five goals – two in a 3-2 crossover win over Henderson – and 15 assists. O’Connor was a second-teamer last year; a first-team All-Delco lacrosse player as a long-stick midfielder, he has signed to play lacrosse at Penn State.

Nick Dignazio, Strath Haven: If you needed to find Dignazio in a big game, you knew where to look, because it wasn’t the bench. The speedy junior defenseman would rarely leave the ice in big moments, using his athleticism, economy of movement and outright determination to anchor a Panthers defense that improved greatly as the season wore on. He was third on the Panthers with 10 goals, led the way with 16 assists and was second to Peabody with 26 points. He scored the first two goals of a 7-3 win over Ridley in the first round of the Central League playoffs, adding three assists (all to Peabody). He added a goal as the Panthers battled Springfield to a 5-4 loss in the Central League semifinals after two 10-0 losses to them in the season. Dignazio also had a goal and an assist in the Flyers Cup loss to Palmyra.

Nate Rabadam, Haverford: The senior bolstered his status as the top two-way defenseman in the county, earning a second straight All-Delco berth for the Central League champions. Rabadam is the consummate power-play captain, with his passing and powerful point drive. His superb skating, unflappability with the puck and defensive awareness makes him outstanding at avoiding trouble and putting out fires created by others. The Fords didn’t quite hit the Flyers Cup high of last year, but they still won 16 games and upset Springfield for their second straight Central League crown. From the blueline, Rabadam was fourth on the team in goals with 12, tied McClelland for the team lead in assists with 23 and finished second on the team and 12th in Delco with 35 points. He tallied a hat trick in a 4-1 nonleague win over Avon Grove, set up McClelland’s game-tying goal in the Central League final and tallied a goal and five assists in three Flyers Cup outings. “He was great,” McClelland said of his classmate. “He filled my role perfectly and he helped everybody out the same way I helped them out. … Nate really stepped up bigtime.”

Strath Haven’s Josh Peabody scored 26 goals and tallied 35 points in only 12 games this season. (Pete Bannan/MediaNews Group)

2nd Team

Andrew Knight, Jr. F, Radnor
Dominic Romolini, Sr. F, Springfield
Tucker Graham, So. F, Radnor
Jai Jani, Sr. G, Haverford

Honorable Mention

Garnet Valley: Latham Hutchinson, Dylan Kouba
Haverford: Aiden Brawley, Quinn Carson, Ryan McGlade, Owen Rabadam
Marple Newtown: Matthew Beatty, Zachery Dembzynski, Tenzee Z’Ningray
Penncrest: Tyler Conn, Nick De Pizzo, Kain Walker
Radnor: Connor Baumann, Ryan Carr, Dominick Laudicina, Luke Mallory

All-Delco Hockey Player of Year: Despite injury, few had moves like Haverford’s Jagur McClelland

HAVERFORD — Jagur McClelland didn’t need any reminders from the boisterous crowd at the Skatium on that particular Thursday night. For all that the Haverford senior forward had been through, he understood the stakes pretty well.

Springfield and Haverford entered the third period of a contentious Central League final tied at 1. McClelland knew the vitriol his opponent and its fans brought to the rink. He was, after all, the architect of the 2021 baptism Haverford meted out, an 11-1 mercy-rule affair in the final, on the path to a Flyers Cup triumph.

But separate from such drama, McClelland knew what this game meant to him. He’d missed all of December and most of January with a foot injury, an ailment that wrote off his chances at hitting the road to play for junior-level hockey, and also drastically diminished how much he could play with his Haverford mates this senior season.

There would be no making up for lost time. But in that final, there was a chance to script a new ending that at junctures of a difficult season seemed unlikely.

McClelland felt that pressure, more than anything lobbed from the stands, as he approached the third-period puck drop.

“I was nervous,” McClelland said. “I tried to keep it simple. My mindset was all over the place, but I just tried to get the puck on the net, and it worked two times, so that was nice.”

The nerves didn’t show, even if Springfield, the top seed, pulled ahead when Zach Crain scored 2:41 into the third.

In a game where the Fords needed their star player to play like a star, McClelland stepped up as he has his entire career. He assisted on Quinn Carson’s opening goal in the first period. Then with less than five minutes to play, he buried a feed from Nate Rabadam to make it 2-2. Fifty-two seconds later, he deposited what would be the game-winner.

It was a microcosm of what McClelland has always been: A big player for the biggest moments.

And also, once again, the Daily Times Boys Hockey Player of the Year.

Joining McClelland on the first team is teammate Nate Rabadam; Springfield defenseman Ryan O’Connor and forward Crain; Strath Haven’s forward Josh Peabody and defenseman Nick Dignazio and Cardinal O’Hara goaltender Christian Green.

McClelland is the player of the year for the second consecutive season. He, Rabadam and Crain are repeat selections. Dignazio, a junior, is the lone underclassmen. The All-Delco team is selected in consultation with local coaches.

All Delco Swim Teams

The following swimmers from the Central League were named to the All Delco Teams.

1st Team

Mary Kubiak, Springfield: The junior was the top sprinter in Delco, earning a pair of second swims at the PIAA Class 3A Championships. Kubiak won the B final in the girls’ 100 backstroke at Bucknell, with a time of 56.66 seconds. In the 50 free, she landed 14th, with a top time of 24.06 seconds in the morning. She had been 10th at the District 1 Class 3A Championships in the 50 and medaled in the 100 back in fourth. Kubiak finished fourth in the 50 free and third in the 100 back at the Central League championships.

Audrey Collins, Radnor: The senior delivered a magical first day at states. She swam fly on the Radnor 200 medley relay, which secured a medal in eighth. She then bulled her way into the A final of the 200 IM on the way to an All-American consideration time of 2:03.29 that earned fifth. She finished fifth in the 100 fly in 56.33, having gotten into the A final on fumes in the morning as the eighth and final seed. For good measure, Collins led off the Radnor 400 free relay the next day in 52.85, a time that would’ve qualified for the individual event in states, on the way to the Raptors winning the B final for ninth. Collins finished third in the IM and fourth in fly at districts, adding relay medals in third and sixth. She claimed the 100 fly title at Centrals and was the 100 ****** runner-up, the second-fastest time in the county this year. Collins will continue her career at Colgate.

Alexandra Pastris, Marple Newtown: The senior concludes her career as one of the most decorated divers in Delco history. A four-time All-Delco, the Delaware commit medaled at states all four years –eighth and fourth at the PIAA Class 3A championships as a freshman and sophomore before consecutive PIAA Class 2A golds. She repeated as state champ this season with a score of 431.65 points. She was also the District 1 champ by scoring 450.35. Both scores were higher than the 3A champion at the same meet. Pastris graduates in firm grasp of both Delco diving records: Her 11-dive total of 477.35 from her sophomore year (she scored 469.25 at Centrals this year, the second-highest in county history) and a six-dive score of 316.60 from a dual meet with Radnor in January the improved her own record.

Shane Eckler, Ridley: Another sophomore sprint star, Eckler had a successful and compelling postseason. He needed a swim-off at states to make the B final of the 100 free, going 46.80 on the way to jumping up to 14th place. It made up for a tough swim in the 50 free, in which he missed the wall and landed 31st. Eckler showed what he could do at districts, tying for fifth in the 50 free in 21.35 and tying for sixth in the 100 free. He set a best time of 21.06 in the 50 at Centrals and was second to Kennedy in both that event and the 100 free.

Rhett Cosgrove, Radnor: For a second straight season, Cosgrove was the distance authority in Delco, the William & Mary signee earning two state medals. Cosgrove finished seventh in the 200 free, with a top time of 1:41.52. In the 500, he squeaked into the A final to secure a medal for eighth. His time of 4:35.11 was the quickest in Delco this season by more than nine seconds. Cosgrove also anchored the Raptors’ states-qualifying 200 medley. At the District 1 championships, he was 12th in the 200 free and seventh in the 500. He did the distance double at Centrals to go with a pair of relay bronzes.

Jacob Johnson, Springfield: Between Kennedy and his fellow sophomore Johnson, the future is blindingly bright at Springfield. Johnson’s performance in the 100 fly in prelims at states the most impressive among the Delco male contingent this season, by the NISCA power points. His time of 49.65 seconds was the third-fastest in prelims, and while he was slower at night, he still medaled in eighth place. Johnson helped the Cougars earn a pair of finals swims in relays, the 200 medley squad finishing 10th and the 200 free 11th. Johnson secured three medals at districts, with a silver in the 100 fly in 49.92, after winning the Central League title in the event. He helped the Cougars finish fourth in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 200 free. He finished 12th at districts in the 100 free. Johnson’s 100 fly swim is also the lone All-American consideration cut among the Delco boys this season.

Marple Newtown diver Alexandra Pastris poses with her medal in fourth place at the PIAA Class 3A championships Thursday at Bucknell University.

2nd Team

All-Delco Swimmers of the Year: Eruslanova, Kennedy share a sky’s-the-limit trait

There’s something different about the mentality of Katya Eruslanova and Jake Kennedy compared to the typical swimmer.

Kennedy, a Springfield sophomore, has the aloofness of a sprinter, yet hasn’t caught up to what he’s physically capable of. Even at such an early juncture, he has three individual states swims under his belt and a physical build poised to achieve much more.

Haverford junior Eruslanova shares the trait of not quite knowing how impressive she is in the water. She’s a three-time state champion who’s gone from wondering if college swimming was possible to fielding a line of suitors, a group that could grow with a big summer at higher-profile meets.

It’s odd to clock that similarity, since the swimmers fall at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of specialty. Kennedy is the consummate sprinter, a 50 and 100 freestyler who says, “I just like being able to swim it, get the adrenaline. It’s fun to me.”

Eruslanova hovers near the other extreme. She’s not quite a distance purist in the mile and 400 IM mold. But her best events may be the 200-yard strokes, swam in college but not high school. That leaves her to fill the 200 IM in high school, the event in which she’s a two-time reigning PIAA Class 3A champ. Her journey is encapsulated by a summer goal to secure the last two National Club Swimming Association Championships cuts she’s missing, for the 1,650 freestyle and 200 butterfly, whether she’d swim them at championships for Suburban Swim Club or not.

Despite that global proficiency, the high school format has brought out something special in her.

“In a high school meet, we have more chances to race,” she said. “I feel like that works really well for me. I’m able to practice my events in just a practice suit, and being able to race and have that mentality that, I’m at a meet, it’s time to swim.”

Both are uniquely talented. Both are Daily Times Swimmers of the Year.

They are joined on the All-Delco team by the Notre Dame trio of Ashley Kolessar, Tori Abruzzo and Devyn Sargent; Haverford School’s Max Marr and AJ Rosenberger; Kennedy’s Springfield teammates, Mary Kubiak and Jacob Johnson; the Radnor duo of Audrey Collins and Rhett Cosgrove; Marple Newtown diver Alexandra Pastris; Episcopal Academy’s Henry Haupt and Ridley’s Shane Eckler.

Pastris is on the All-Delco team for the fourth consecutive year. Kolessar is a three-time honoree, missing out last year largely because the Inter-Ac season was abbreviated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Cosgrove, Kennedy and Rosenberger are two-time picks.

All four classes are represented, with an unusually young boys team comprising one senior and five sophomores. Abruzzo is the lone freshman. Three seniors – Kolessar, Collins, Pastris – lead the girls team. The All-Delco team is selected in consultation with local coaches.

Kennedy’s accolade is unprecedented: He’s the first Springfield swimmer named a Daily Times Swimmer of the Year, which dates to the mid-1990s. His selection to the team last year marked the first Springfield boys All-Delco since 2011 (John Quagliariello). Kennedy is the first Boys Swimmer of the Year from a public school since Haverford’s Shane Ryan in 2012. (Eruslanova and Kennedy, coincidentally, hail from schools that lack on-premises pools, with the Fords sharing time at Haverford School and Springfield at Swarthmore College.)

Kennedy burst onto the scene as a freshman, finishing third at the District 1 Class 3A Championships in the 50 free. He would end up 15th at states in that event.

A year older, Kennedy returned from states with a medal and four finals swims. He finished sixth in the 50, cracking 21 seconds to 20.93. He added 12th in the 100 free and helped the Cougars tie for 10th in the medley relay and grab 11th in the 200 free relay.

Between Kennedy and Johnson, a fellow sophomore, the future is bright for Springfield swimming.

“I had a lot more support going into it,” Kennedy said. “I had some more teammates, and it really pushes me harder. To have other friends on other teams, it pushes me to get better.”

Kennedy partners for training at Ridley YMCA with Eckler, who qualified for states in both sprint events and finished 14th in the 100.

“It’s really fun to be able to swim him in the 50 and 100 free,” Kennedy said. “… He’s usually better than me in practice. I’m usually one or two behind him. But when we do sprints in practice, we definitely are racing each other.”

All-Delco Wrestling: Senior-laden first team showed excellence all the way to states

The 1st Team All-Delco team includes the following members from the Central League:

Cole McFarland, Haverford: Just a sophomore, McFarland already is a two-time All-Delco and two-time state qualifier. He made history last year when he became the first freshman in program history to qualify for the PIAA Class 3A Championships. He continues to etch his name in the record book. McFarland went 37-5 overall this season and was a double-digit winner in three weight classes. He went 12-4 at 106, 15-1 at 113 and 10-0 at 120. He became the ninth wrestler in school history, and the first sophomore, to medal at the state meet when he took fifth at 106 pounds in Class 3A. Along the way he won his second straight Central League crown, captured the District 1 South title and finished third at the Southeast Regional.

Matt Ricci, Garnet Valley: Compiled a 37-7 overall record to qualify for the state tournament and earn All-Delco honors for the second time in his career. Spent much of the season at 126 where he went 23-6 and took third at the District 1 Class 3A West tournament and second at the Southeast Regional to earn a trip to Hershey. A three-time Central League individual champion and four-time team champ, Ricci closed out his career with a 102-41 mark, a remarkable feat in the COVID era. A two-sport standout in football as well as wrestling, Ricci will attend the United States Naval Academy.

Daniel Husain, Garnet Valley: Seniors showed the way for Garnet Valley and Husain was part of that strong class that guided the Jaguars to their fifth consecutive Central League title and a third-place finish at both the District 1 Class 3A West and Southeast Regional tournaments. Competed at 138 and 145 pounds where he compiled a 41-7 record. A two-time Central League individual champion, Husain placed second at 138 pounds at the District 1 Class 3A West tournament and third at the Southeast Regional to earn his first trip to the PIAA Championships. Closed out his career with a 92-35 mark and will continue his wrestling career at New York University.
