Football: Coaches stressing enjoyment, execution for Hero Bowl

CHESTER — The more head coach Tony Beaty watched his West All-Stars practice for the Hero Bowl, the more he believed he had something special, that he had accurate quarterbacks, speedy receivers, defenders willing to collide.

Then he remembered: The East will have an All-Star team, too.

“I’m excited,’ said Beaty, the coach at Chester High. “The kids are excited, too. We look pretty good. But ‘ on paper’ is always different than reality. We’ll see what happens when we get on the field.’

That will happen Thursday night (7:30) at Cardinal O’Hara High in the 39th annual game, which benefits the Delaware County Hero Scholarship fund for the families of police, firemen and emergency responders killed while on duty.

Under a revised format that splits Delco geographically rather than a previous setup that essentially matched the Central League stars against the Del-Val with some private school stars blended into the rosters, the game should yield a refreshed rivalry.

Boys Lacrosse: Overtime win leaves Springfield singing in relief

WEST CHESTER — After their 9-8 overtime win over Hershey in the first round of the PIAA boys lacrosse tournament, Springfield players broke into a joyous rendition of the Credence Clearwater Revival hit “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?’

Never mind the song came out nearly three decades before the players were born, it was the perfect choice, a classic for a timeless moment in the Cougars’ lives. And, well, they had seen the rain.

Storms delayed the start of the game more than 90 minutes. Then midway through the third quarter, the rain and lightning returned, sending everyone at West Chester East scurrying for cover.

“It was a struggle,’ said senior midfielder Dan Wasson, who in addition to the long delays felt under the weather on a day that it didn’t cooperate.

The extended break seemed to disrupt the Cougars. When Springfield left the field in the third quarter, the District One champs held a 7-3 lead. Eighteen minutes of game play later, the Cougars were tied. The Trojans found the back of James Spence’s net five times in the fourth quarter, while Lucas Spence’s second goal, in which he spun off two defenders with a fake pass, was Springfield’s only answer. After regulation it was 8-8.

Girls Lacrosse: Mathewson, Garnet Valley make good on second try against Carroll

ASTON — Garnet Valley and Archbishop Carroll played a nonleague game three weeks ago, and the Catholic League champion Patriots rolled to a one-sided decision over the defending PIAA champion Jaguars.

“That game was like scouting for us,’ Jaguars junior defender Michelle Koscinski said Wednesday, after Garnet Valley earned a 14-10 decision over Carroll in the rematch, which took place in the opening round of the PIAA Girls Lacrosse Tournament at Neumann University.

“We saw what they did, and we were confident if we played Garnet Valley lacrosse this time, we would win.’

The Jaguars scored the first three goals Wednesday, then Anna Murphy (two) and Avery Murphy answered for Carroll (19-2). The Jags used a four goals in seven minutes run to take an 8-6 advantage at halftime.

Boys Lacrosse: Springfield still seeking its ultimate goal

SPRINGFIELD — Kyle Long didn’t even spare a sentence break on the thought last Thursday.

“It’s great,’ the Springfield freshman uttered minutes after his Cougars had wrapped up a District One title with a 7-5 win over Conestoga, “but we’ve still got one more goal, of a state championship.’

Five days later, the same mindset permeates Springfield’s preparations for the Wednesday’s PIAA Tournament opener with Hershey: That the Cougars have yet to accomplish the ultimate goal of their season.

That quest begins for Springfield, winner of 15 of its last 16, at West Chester East when District Three’s third-seeded Trojans (22-1) come calling.

Boys Track and Field: St. Louis keys Upper Darby’s record day

SHIPPENSBURG — Donovan St. Louis did not know whether to smile or cry after he won the boys Class AAA 400-meter dash title Saturday afternoon at the PIAA Track & Field Championships, so he decided to do both. The smile came first and it was befitting of being the first Upper Darby male athlete to win an individual title at the state meet since Bill Edgar captured the 120-yard high hurdles title in 1963.  The tears came a little bit later when St. Louis called his mother to let her know of his accomplishments. His family are Seventh Day Adventists so they were home, observing the Sabbath.

“It’s a little sad that my mom (Bath-Schebba Dyer) couldn’t be here, but I understand,” St. Louis said. “I know they could watch it on TV and hopefully she did.”

If his mom did watch the meet on TV, she not only saw her son set one individual team record, help the 4 x 400-meter relay establish another school record and guide the Royals to what is believed to be their highest finish at the state meet. Upper Darby placed second in Class AAA with 34 points. Cheltenham (51 points) ran away with the team title.
