Football: Springfield upholding Linebacker High tradition

SPRINGFIELD >> There’s no mistaking that Springfield is the Linebacker High of Delaware County football.
Adam Krauter. Mike Dougherty. Tyler Morrissey … the list goes on and on. And if you’re lucky enough to be a starting linebacker at Springfield, there’s no question that you’ve earned the job. This year’s fearsome four are seniors Tom Becker, Nick Gorman, P.J. Johnson and Ricky Sterling.

“I think it’s a privilege to be a starting linebacker at Springfield,” Gorman said. “You’ve got to have the intensity. It’s a mindset.” And you better be ready to go beyond the call of duty.

“You have to step up and be a leader if you want to be a linebacker on this team,” Sterling said. “You don’t want to ruin that tradition.”

“It doesn’t come without putting in a lot of work,” Johnson added. “There’s a tradition of great linebackers that holds it down.”

Volleyball: Penncrest battles its way into quarterfinals

MIDDLETOWN >> After beating Abington, 3-1, then taking down the net and briefly chatting with family and friends, nearly every member of the Penncrest volleyball team did what you would expect teenagers to do: They immediately went to their cell phones to find out the score of the Strath Haven-Mount St. Joseph’s match.

It did not take long for the Lions to let out a second celebratory roar.

The Mount upset the third-seeded Panthers, 3-0, which means the sixth-seeded Lions (18-4) will be at home in the quarterfinal round of the District One Class AAA tournament instead of on the road.

That’s fine with Penncrest. Of course, a rematch with Strath Haven would have been OK, too. The Lions are glad to still be playing.

The second round of the district tournament usually is where Penncrest’s season comes to an end. This is the first time the Lions have advanced to the quarterfinals since Jen Carney took over as head coach six years ago so the hard-fought, 25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23 victory over the Ghosts was reason enough to celebrate.

Girls Soccer: Garnet Valley takes first-round feat in stride

CONCORD >> Ashley Bufano expected a battle in goal Tuesday night. She backstopped No. 28 Garnet Valley in a stalemated first half against No. 5 Boyertown, then saw a Jaguars goal early in the second cancelled out by a Boyertown strike with 11 minutes to play. As the game wound toward the inevitability of penalty kicks, the junior goalie suffered no nerves. In some ways, that denouement seemed perfect for the Jags’ journey this season. Bufano and her teammates ran headlong toward it.

“I feel like our season has kind of been like that,” Bufano said Wednesday, hours after Garnet Valley survived PKs, 3-1, to notch a momentous upset in the first round of the District One Class AAA tournament. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity, and we really just pushed through as a team. So I feel like I was really conditioned to just keep going.”

That process continues Thursday when Garnet Valley (9-6-4) visits No. 12 seed Owen J. Roberts in the second round.

Field Hockey: Conestoga’s superior attack finishes Haverford’s season

BERWYN >> Haverford junior Lea VanLuvender wasn’t ready to see her field hockey season end in the rain Wednesday afternoon. Despite VanLuvender’s best efforts, the 12th-seeded Fords couldn’t overcome a first-half deficit and dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 5 Conestoga in a PIAA District One Class AAA second-round contest at Teamer Field. The Central League champion Pioneers (18-2) will play a quarterfinal round contest Friday against the winner of Thursday’s game between fourth-seeded Neshaminy (18-1) and No. 13 West Chester Henderson (14-4-1), while Haverford’s underclassmen will do what they can to try to prepare to get back to the playoffs in 2016.

“We found out we couldn’t let them shoot from the top of the circle,” VanLuvender said as she looked back at the many scoring opportunities host ’Stoga ended up with against the Fords.

Bruce keeps piling up the yards as Upper Darby rolls

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> There were more than a few surprised people at halftime of the Upper Darby-Strath Haven game Friday night.

Considering the spots that the teams occupy in the Central League standings, the thought of seeing the Royals only lead the Panthers by a touchdown raised a few eyebrows. It didn’t go over well in the Upper Darby locker room, either, but the Royals never panicked.

Instead, they just rode their horse. Isaiah Bruce took the second play from scrimmage in the second half 62 yards for a touchdown, and on the ensuing drive, darted 44 yards to set up a 3-yard Christoff Minott touchdown. The haymakers did a number on Strath Haven, and by the end of the night, Bruce and the rest of the first-stringers watched from the sidelines as the Royals put the finishing touches on a 34-7 rout.

Volleyball: Strath Haven tries Central title on for size

LOWER MERION >> Anyone who thought Strath Haven was going to cruise to its fourth Central League volleyball title in the last six years after the Panthers took the opening game of the league final against Ridley Wednesday night obviously failed to remember what happened when the teams met five weeks ago in the regular season.
Strath Haven had to win the last three games to pull out a five-set victory over the Green Raiders so the Panthers knew this was going to be just as tough, and it was.
Strath Haven used its size advantage to get past the gritty Green Raiders, 3-1, in front of a spirited crowd at Harriton High School.
“We know how scrappy Ridley always is and this team is no exception,” Strath Haven coach Kevin Haney said. “They’re well-coached and they’re as tough as any team we’ve seen all season. We were lucky to barely get by them earlier in the season. They’re just a really bad matchup for us. They do things that make us uncomfortable. They serve aggressively and they’re able hit through the gaps in our blocks. Kristen (Schaffer, the Ridley coach) did a great job of game-planning for us tonight.”
For Haney, Strath Haven’s 25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19 victory could be a going-away present. He said he was all but certain that this will be his last season as the Panthers’ head coach after 14 years at the helm.

Girls Soccer- Springfield’s seniors somehow salvaged a lost season

GLENOLDEN >> Positives were few and far between in the first month of the Springfield girls soccer season.

So when the first glimmer of positivity arrived in Game 11 — a win over Upper Darby Sept. 29, after a 10-game winless run — a dose of cold water wasn’t far away.

When the Cougars reported for practice the next day, they were greeted with news that first-year coach Paul Horozoglou had quit abruptly. Eleven games into a season that had already gone off the rails, a Springfield squad that entered the season harboring realistic postseason aspirations was left in a quandary as to what came next.

“I was pretty shocked when I heard what happened,” Springfield senior defender Mattie Porter said. “I did not see that coming. But I was pretty calm also because I know that our athletic director wouldn’t let us go without a coach. We have some good teachers and faculty; they would fill in for us. A lot of people were also offering their help, which was nice. If other people aren’t going to give up on us, we know that we cannot give up on ourselves.”
