Drew Merschel leads Conestoga to second-half surge past Strath Haven

NETHER PROVIDENCE — It was tied after one quarter and knotted at the half when coach Brody Bush had a heart-to-heart talk with the Conestoga lacrosse team on a deceptively cold Thursday evening at King Field.

Inspired by his words and body language the Pioneers exploded for three goals in 84 seconds early in the third quarter, senior Drew Merschel netting a pair to secure a 7-2 Central League victory over Strath Haven.

“We just told them, ‘Look, every Central League game is a dogfight,’” Bush said. “And we told the seniors that we needed them to step up so the younger guys would follow them, and they did. It’s a game of momentum. And our defense did a fantastic job. Holding a team to two goals is a really good job.”

Bush praised goalie Mikey Johnson, who had two saves yet distributed the ball efficiently to teammates, as well as faceoff man Holt McGinn, who won the bulk of his battles with Big Ben Farabaugh.

Merschel (6-2, 210) scored four goals, including three in the second half burst to power the Pioneers (6-1, 2-0), who boast one of the bigger lineups in the league. Wade Beckstrom added two goals for Conestoga, which never trailed.

“I would say we did come out sluggish, but the coaches talked to us and in the second half we really brought the energy,” Merschel said. “We played great offense there and we have great defense and that really helped us. I just kind of found the defenders were pushing out a lot. When I see that I just kind of had muscle memory of just ducking my guy and going low and shooting. They have a great goalie. I got the best of him today.”

Austin Conner, the twin of Panthers’ girls lacrosse star Laura Conner, and Tate Gorman scored goals for Strath Haven (3-2, 1-1).

Panthers goalie Charles Bogert registered seven saves in the first half, most of those dazzling, and finished with a dozen stops. Bogert robbed Merschel on back-to-back blasts in the crease, one on a rebound.

Determined Kane delivers winner for Springfield

Maddie Kane would not be denied.

After two of her goals were called back due to infractions, the Springfield sophomore finally scored one that counted. Kane delivered the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Cougars past Garnet Valley, 9-8.

Kane (two assists), Erin DeStefano, Allie Hunter and Claire Lynch all netted two goals. Lynch’s draw control set up Kane’s winner in the extra session. Maddy McBride made seven saves in net for Springfield.

Maddie Shoemaker and Mia Zebley (four draw controls, two caused turnovers) each had two goals and two assists for the Jaguars. Jenny Green produced a goal and four draw controls.

In game of runs, Conestoga has one that counts

TREDYFFRIN — There were ebbs and flows galore for Tuesday’s Central League boys lacrosse opener at Teamer Field on both sides. Host Conestoga was certainly in the flow, however, at the end of each half, and that powered the Pioneers to a critical 11-9 come-from-behind win over Marple Newtown.

In the final nine minutes of action in the second quarter and again in the fourth, ’Stoga outscored the Tigers by a combined eight goals, which was more than enough to tilt a competitive battle its way.

“Lacrosse is a game of runs. (Marple Newtown) had theirs, for sure,” said Pioneers’ coach Brody Bush. “It just went back and forth, but I guess we just happened to get our run at the end of the game,”

Coming off its only loss so far this season (versus Downingtown West), Conestoga improves to 4-1 overall. The Tigers fall to 1-1.

“This was a fight between two solid teams that are working to get better,” Marple Newtown coach Kevin Merchant said. “It could have gone either way. Every game is an opportunity to win, but you have to put it together in order to pull it out.”

After holding the Pioneers scoreless in the third quarter, the Tigers inched ahead 9-8 with 9 minutes, 21 seconds remaining in the fourth on a goal by sophomore midfielder Ryan Keating. It was, however, Marple Newtown’s final tally.

Senior tri-captain Chris Forgie notched the equalizer on a tremendous individual effort through several defenders with 7:56 to go. And then after captains Drew Merschel and Wade Beckstrom each had shots bounce off the cage on the same possession, senior attacker Brody Eaton took a pass from teammate Clif Hawkins and put the Pioneers in front for good at the 3:36 mark.

A little over a minute later, Eaton scored again on a pass from Merschel to provide the final margin. Conestoga’s sophomore goalkeeper Mikey Johnson notched two of his 14 saves down the stretch to close it out.

“I think once we got it going down the stretch, it was game-over for (Marple Newtown),” Eaton said. “We ran our offense pretty well and we played as a team.”

“Teams make mistakes this early in the season, so we need to clean those up before we get into the heart of the season,” Merchant said. “I think our kids showed heart, hustle and focus today. I don’t think it was from a lack of effort. The fundamentals just kind of hurt us.

“I think turnovers killed us in this one. This was two teams, early in the season, trying to figure out their identity. (Conestoga) had fewer turnovers, and we had some big ones that we couldn’t overcome.”

Junior Alex Chambers won 14 of 20 faceoffs for the Tigers against a couple Pioneer challengers. But Conestoga had a 25-18 edge in shots on goal.

“We don’t have a ton of seniors – we are pretty young – but the ones we have took over,” Bush said. “Our captains did a great job and the younger boys sort of followed their lead. That’s good. That’s what you want.

Luke D’Ancona’s bat, arm the difference for Strath Haven

Luke D’Ancona came through with a run-scoring single and recorded five strikeouts across three innings to lead Strath Haven to a 2-1 Central League victory over Marple Newtown.

D’Ancona registered the save for starting pitcher Alex ***, who tossed three shutout innings, striking out three. Zane Malarkey also hurled one solid inning relief for the Panthers.

Jake McDonough was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and run scored.

Bennett Cox was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Tigers. Kevin Taraborell reached base three times with two singles and a walk, and Aiden Pearson threw 4.2 shutout innings of relief.

Springfield shows scoring depth in win over O’Hara

SPRINGFIELD — Erin DeStefano has more than 100 goals on her résumé and was Springfield’s leading scorer last season.

Thus it was slightly unusual to see DeStefano held without a goal in the first half of the Cougars’ 17-5 victory over Cardinal O’Hara Tuesday. But the senior attack had plenty of help from her friends.

Jaclyn Guille netted a hat trick, while Kylee O’Donnell and Devin Buggy each recorded two goals in the opening 20 minutes. By halftime Springfield was well on its way to a 2-0 start to the season.

“It’s about doing the little things, starting with the draw control to get possession so that my attackers can do the rest,” said DeStefano, who had three second-half goals. “It’s a team effort, which I think is the most important thing. If everyone can work on the little things, our team can be really good.”

Springfield has the talent to improve upon a 16-win campaign. Last year’s team played in the District 1 Class 3A final and advanced to the PIAA tournament. Several of those Cougars, including defensive stalwarts Lexi Aaron (two assists) and Anabel Kreydt, recently returned to the lacrosse team after a long basketball season. All-Delco midfielder Mia Valerio, the starting point guard on the basketball team, is temporarily sidelined due to an ankle injury.

“The basketball girls really help a lot because they have more varsity experience like Anabel, Lexi and Mia,” DeStefano said. “They help everyone stay focused and be patient on the field.”

“Right now we’re just trying to get back into the swing of things,” Springfield coach Keith Broome said. “We had a good game with West Chester Rustin on Friday and they were missing basketball players. Playing O’Hara today, we had lost to them last year and the year before. This is a town rivalry game so it’s really good to come out and win. … They graduated a lot from last year and we only graduated one starter, so we have a lot of kids back and we have a couple of young kids who stepped up really well.”

O’Donnell, a sophomore transfer from Academy of Notre Dame, has been excellent. She finished Tuesday’s game with three goals and two assists.

“Erin chose to not score early, but many of the other kids did, which is a good thing,” Broome said. “We’ve had a hard time with that goalie (Mackenzie Hand) in the past. We hit her a lot last year and it was nice to score on her today.”

Training buds from different schools Shane Eckler, Jake Kennedy flash medals at states

It’s been a long, fallow period for boys from Delaware County at the PIAA Championships. Not since Shane Ryan won four gold medals from 2010-12 has a Delaware County boys swimmer reached the top step of the podium – swimmer or diver, Class 3A or 2A.

Friday and Saturday, a special cohort of swimmers made up for lost time in a hurry.

Ridley’s Shane Eckler did the sprint double at the PIAA Class 3A Championships, leading five gold medals from Delco. More impressive was two 1-2 finishes, Eckler followed by Springfield’s Jake Kennedy in the 50, then Kennedy winning the 100 backstroke with Penncrest’s Jonathan Hoole second.

Kennedy anchored the winning 200 free relay, which also included 100 fly champ Jacob Johnson.

The dynamic between Eckler and Kennedy is particularly telling. They train together at Ridley YMCA. A year ago, Kennedy, the Daily Times Swimmer of the Year, finished sixth in the 50 free and 12th in the 100 free. Eckler was 14th in the 100 free and didn’t final in the 50. Eckler won the District 1 title in the 50 with Kennedy third last month.

At Bucknell, Eckler qualified first from prelims in 20.49, with Kennedy second in 20.65. In the final, Eckler pulled away to win in 20.14 seconds. Kennedy was second in 20.41.

“I practice with him and race him every single day,” Eckler said. “So I feel like when we come here, it’s like we’re swimming a practice, being next to each other in the 50 free final at states.”

“I love swimming with him and racing with him,” Kennedy said. “He gets me back from other years that I’ve been beating him. It’s a good race, good fight between both of us.”

Eckler carried more pressure in the 100 free, having set the top time in prelims and having the 50 free title under his belt. But it didn’t seem to stop him. He was .48 seconds faster at night to win in 44.21.

“I just kind of swim the 100 free like, you know, I’m going to swim a 50 free and then at the end, I’m going to do it again,” Eckler said.

Eckler is Ridley’s first state swimming champion, boys or girls, joining only Josh Bonner’s diving titles in 2003 and 2004. Eckler also helped get a pair of Ridley relays to states, the 200 medley and 200 free both finishing 23rd.

“I’m really proud of getting Ridley out there a little bit more, and I’m really glad that I’m the person that’s able to give Ridley a little bigger name,” Eckler said. “I want to put us on the map a little bit more.”

Ridley added another medal in girls diving Friday, with Jolie Torrens finishing eighth. She scored 211.75 points, easily clear of the ninth-place finisher, to get on the podium. Teammate Ava Keller finished 14th.

Springfield’s 200 free relay on Friday qualified first by eight tenths in prelims in 1:23.95, 1.5 seconds quicker than at districts. They found another half-second in the evening to make it a laugher, winning by a full second, Johnson and Kennedy joined by Alex Chan and Luke Kennedy. Johnson split 20.65 seconds; Jake Kennedy’s split of 19.82 on the anchor was the best of the meet.

“I’m very happy about that,” Kennedy said. “I’ve got 20.0 three or four times now, and I don’t have the best starts – I’m usually a pretty safe starter – but very glad I could get under 20.”

A year ago, Johnson had made the A final in the 100 fly in third but had a disappointing night swim, sliding to third. This time, he was the top seed out of prelims by nearly two seconds. He was .06 slower at night, but his 47.58 still blew the field away by more than a second. Johnson also won the B final of the 100 free on Saturday in 45.98 for ninth overall.

Conestoga, Alexa Fulton are leading Chesco swimmers to watch at States

At last year’s PIAA 3A Swimming and Diving Championships, both Conestoga squads finished in the top five in the team competition –the Pioneers placed second in the PIAA girls’ competition and fifth in the boys’ competition.
This week, led by four senior All-Americans and coming off a District 1 3A team championship, the Conestoga girls should make their presence felt at PIAA 3A state championships, and maybe even win their first-ever PIAA 3A girls swimming team state title.
Conestoga girls swimming head coach Rob Kirkby said, “We’ve had a great season, won the Central League and District titles, and we’re hoping to make some waves and have fun here this weekend. Our team has some very good swimmers, and there are some other teams at this meet that have some very good swimmers too.”
The Pioneer girls are led by senior All-Americans Lily Robinson, Naomi Furman, Audrey Laganelli and Keira Haas.
Furman will be competing in the 100 ****** (she was first at Districts, 1:03.12) and 200 IM (she placed fourth at Districts); Laganelli in the 200 free (fourth at Districts) and 100 free (sixth at Districts); Robinson in the 50 free (fifth at Districts) and 100 free (seventh at Districts); and Haas in the 100 back (eighth at Districts).
These four swimmers also will be competing in the 400 free relay, where they were second at Districts (3:29.51). Robinson, Furman, Haas and junior Jena Nowoswiat should be a strong contender in the 200 medley relay.
Pioneer junior Sarah Fox will be competing in the girls 200 IM and 500 free, Nowoswiat will swim the girls 100 fly and both freshman Reilly Dolan and sophomore Hadar Miller will compete in the girls 100 ******.
The Pioneer girls also have a strong diver in sophomore Avery Hillier, who finished first at Districts. Junior Grace Gallagher, who placed third at Districts, is out with a concussion.
The Conestoga boys’ team features a deep group of swimmers, led by junior Jake Wang, who last month was District 1 3A Boys Swimmer of the Meet for the second year in a row. He placed first at Districts in both the 200 IM and 100 ****** and will be swimming these events at States.
Other Pioneers to watch are junior Can Yeniay in 200 free (first at Districts, 1:38.92) and 500 free (second at Districts); junior Brock Whitaker in 100 fly (fifth at Districts) and 100 free (10th at Districts); the 200 medley relay of Yeniay, Wang, junior Brock Whitaker and senior Andrew Zhang (first at Districts, 1:33.07); and the 400 free relay of Yeniay, Whitaker, Zhang and Wang.
