Youth serves Garnet Valley in win over Ridley

RIDLEY TWP. — The clock showed 1:51 when Greg Vlassopoulos, Garnet Valley’s leading scorer this young season, attempted his first field goal of the third quarter. Yet in that first six-plus minutes, as the senior wing turned his attention elsewhere on the court Friday night, the Jags saw their lead balloon from seven to an ultimately decisive 15 points.

The reason, as a boisterous Garnet Valley student section eagerly pointed out, was a pair of players who are sophomores.

Neel Beniwal scored a career-high 20 points, and Carl Schaller added 13 as Garnet Valley hung on late in the face of Ridley’s incessant press for a 64-55 Central League win.

Beniwal and Schaller combined for 15 points in the third quarter, one more than the Green Raiders scored. The result was a 20-point edge that was whittled to five in the fourth quarter by the awakening Ridley shooters.

Beniwal hit four 3-pointers, including a dagger early in the fourth as he provided the first five points of that frame. Schaller, the 5-7 point guard, started the second half with a triple from a Beniwal feed, then reciprocated to Beniwal on the next trip.

So early in their young careers, they’ve developed a rapport that allows Schaller’s shiftiness and Beniwal’s length to shine on the perimeter.

“It’s really nice because Carl, even though he’s small, he can score and he can get to the hoop and get fouled,” Beniwal said. “And he can make really good passes to us and we can shoot a three.”

It lessens the focus on the senior leaders of the Jags (3-0, 2-0 Central). Vlassopoulos was outstanding as usual with a game-high 21 points, 11 in the first half, to go with nine rebounds. But Cade Brennan was held in check offensively, scoring just two points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Those are the only two in the seniors’ category for coach Mike Brown, so the season’s progress will largely be determined by how quickly players like Schaller and Beniwal become steady contributors.

“Having Carl and Neel around is great,” Vlassopoulos said. “Two young kids, and I don’t think anybody predicted they would come in and show and produce the way they’re producing. If guys are making shots, you can always count on those guys to step up, get to the rim, make free throws, do everything to help us get that win.”

“It’s really good because Greg trusts everyone on this team to shoot the ball and knows we can score,” Beniwal said. “It’s really nice to know that this team is good and we can work together and score whenever we want.”

Conestoga beats Upper Darby first time in a decade behind controversial call

Upper Darby was runner-up in the Central last year after three straight league titles. With Conestoga’s league slate front-loaded, this win was imperative for any hopes at winning its first crown since 2006.

“It’s pretty cool because it reflects we’re getting better,” Johnson said. “It felt good to be the underdog and win it.”

The Pioneers climbed out of their early hole thanks to pins by freshman Mitch Baker (120) and Frederick Mucklow (138) and a major decision by Morgan Lofland (132). Conestoga won eight of the final 11 matches to pull away.

“Our first three guys are freshmen and this was their first experience in a high school dual meet,” Elicker said. “It’s different than middle school or youth. It’s a different atmosphere with a good team and there’s a learning curve. We’ll go back to the room and work on things we failed at.”

Upper Darby’s youth was executing early, but just didn’t have the firepower to win the close matches down the stretch. Still, Martin took some positives away from the competition.

“We’re really young,” Martin said. “We only have two seniors in the lineup. We showed some fight and the kids are getting better every day and hopefully we’ll be able to pull it together to make a run at the end of the year.”

McAteer sets Garnet Valley scoring record in win

CONCORD — Emily McAteer has had numerous double-figure scoring efforts in her four years as a varsity basketball player at Garnet Valley.

She came up short of adding to that career total Tuesday night, scoring only four points as the Jaguars opened their Central League season with a 47-8 decision over Conestoga.

The first two points McAteer put on the board made her the program’s career scoring leader. McAteer finished the night with 1,308 points, which pushed her past the school record of 1,305, set in 1995 by Christy Yarnell. Cecily Scavicchio (1,291), Maddie Ireland (1,284), Amy Tarr (1,221), Coley Ricci (1,201), and Carole Sperone (1,047) are the other GV girls who’ve passed the 1,000-point mark.

As Garnet Valley was on its way to putting up the first 14 points of Tuesday’s game, McAteer missed her first shot, a 3-point attempt 1:40 in. Thirty-six seconds later, she dropped in a layup and broke the school record.

“(Brianne Borcky) stole the ball and got it to me and I made the shot,” said McAteer, who will play next year at Loyola (Maryland). “It was great that she was the one that did that. We know what each other will do out there.

“We’ve played together since third grade, when we were in BYC (Brandywine Youth Club). Then we played for St. Thomas (CYO), and the Lower Delco Wildcats and the Comets.”

In a game against Harriton last January, McAteer reached the 1,000-point mark and had a career-high 30 points.

“My mom (the former Meg Hay) had a high game of 30 when she played for Interboro,” McAteer said. “When I got here my freshman year, I said I wanted to get 1,000 points. When I got to 1,000 as a junior, I knew I wanted to go after the record.

“This means a lot to me, and I’ve been fortunate to have this opportunity. Now I want to reach the (overall) school record (1,470, set earlier this year by Austin Laughlin).”

Jillian Nagy, who tossed in four 3-point shots, led Garnet Valley in scoring with 14 points. Borcky got nine points, six rebounds, and six assists, McAteer chipped in with seven rebounds and three assists, Lisle Dentinger also tossed in nine points, and Morgan Falcone contributed three assists for the Jaguars, who had 15 assists on their 19 field goals.

Lewis happy to be back home at Strath Haven

MIDDLETOWN — Alisha Lewis has spent her entire childhood living in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District.

Until this year, the new senior guard at Strath Haven hasn’t been home too often.

She was a starting player as eighth grader for Ursuline Academy in Delaware where she won three state championships. As a sophomore she earned Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association Player of the Year honors as the top player in the state.

After her sophomore year, she lived with a host family in New York and attended Long Island Lutheran High School (LuHi). Away from home Lewis made a name for herself and caught the attention of several Division I coaches. In November, she signed her National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Georgia Tech next week.

One of the top point guard recruits in the nation – ranked No. 34 by ESPN.com – decided it was in her best interest to stay home in Wallingford for her senior year and attend Strath Haven, where she could reunite with her lifelong friends.

Her family filed the necessary transfer documents and Lewis was permitted to play her senior season on a Strath Haven team that doesn’t quite have the reputation of an Ursuline or LuHi. Lewis says she doesn’t mind that she is the proverbial big fish in a small pond.

“I love being at home and surrounded by people I grew up with,” Lewis said after helping Strath Haven to a season-opening victory over Strath Haven, 50-39, at the Penncrest Tip-Off.

“We lived in Wallingford since she’s been in first grade and we’re happy that she’s back,” said Lewis’ mother, Lisa. “She’s competed a lot in travel ball and she’s worked really hard to get where she is, so it’s nice to have her back home with family and friends. It’s nice to get that last year back at home before she goes away.”

Lewis’ talents are making an immediate impact on the Panthers, who won only three games last winter. With her in the lineup the Panthers are clearly a much-improved team, as evidenced by their one-sided win against Sun Valley.

“I just want to be a leader for everyone and (step) up to help the team as best as I can,” she said. “I know I have to prepare for college because I know I’ll have to fulfill that role when I get there.”

After placing 25th at the Central League Meet, she qualified for states by taking 23rd place at the District 1 Class 3A finals. She was the third finisher from Delaware County at the state meet. “She’s a tough runner,” Penncrest coach Bob Brown said. “Ultra-competitive. Hates to lose.”

Megan Cook, Upper Darby: The senior took eighth place at the Delco Meet, then came back with a seventh-place finish at the Central League Meet. By placing in the top 50 at districts, she earned the right to compete at the state championships, in which she was the fifth-highest finisher from Delaware County.

Paige Day, Strath Haven: A sophomore who ran in the JV race at Delcos in 2017, she took sixth place in the 2018 varsity race, then placed fifth at the Central League Meet. She was Haven’s No. 2 runner at districts and qualified for states, in which she had the second-fastest time among county runners behind her teammate Forbes.

Brendan Campbell, Haverford: The senior was the fourth-place finisher at the Delco Meet as the Fords earned their first team championship. After finishing third at the 2018 Delco Meet for the team champion Fords, Green said of the junior “he had an especially impressive race.” He was his team’s No. 4 runner at Centrals and districts, then was Delaware County’s fifth-fastest finisher at the PIAA Championships in Hershey.

Sean Garrett, Garnet Valley: A junior, he made the All-Delco second team last fall. He came in seventh at the Delco Meet, then placed sixth at the Central League Championships. Evan Peetros, Haverford: A senior who was a member of the All-Delco second team in 2017, he placed sixth at the Delco Meet for the team champion Fords, then helped the team take the Central League Meet title with a fifth-place finish. He was Haverford’s No. 2 runner at the district meet and was the seventh Delco runner to cross the finish line at states. “He simply keeps working and working like few athletes can or do,” Green said.

Patrick Theveny, Penncrest: The junior earned a second All-Delco nomination after placing fifth at the Delco Meet and second at Centrals. He earned a second trip to the state meet with a 13th-place finish at the District 1 Championships, and had the second-fastest time among Delco runners at Hershey, taking 42nd place, 20 places higher than his 2017 finish.

All-Delco Cross Country: Veteran Mike Donnelly, newbie Grace Forbes met the fall challenge

UPPER PROVIDENCE — During the 2017 fall season, Haverford High sophomore Mike Donnelly earned All-Delco first team honors in cross country.

Grace Forbes, a Strath Haven junior, was given All-Delco honorable mention — in soccer.

When practice for the 2018 fall sports season began in August, Donnelly was back running with his Haverford teammates. They were hoping to become the first Fords team to earn the Delaware County championship.

Forbes spent her summer puzzling over whether she would remain her younger sister Maggie’s soccer teammate or would make the move to becoming a cross country runner.

With Donnelly leading the way, Haverford easily claimed its first Delco Meet team title while Forbes made a statement in her first year as a cross country runner by pacing Haven to the county championship.

For their outstanding performances from the start to the finish of the cross country campaign, Donnelly and Forbes are the Daily Times Cross Country Runners of the Year.

Joining Donnelly on the 2018 All-Delco team are teammates Brendan Campbell, Josh Fingerhut, and Evan Peetros, as well as Sean Garrett of Garnet Valley, Patrick Theveny of Penncrest and Radnor’s Ethan Zeh.

Forbes is joined on the girls All-Delco team by Sophie Cohen of Penncrest, Megan Cook of Upper Darby, Strath Haven’s Paige Day, Christine Mancini and Katie Till of Cardinal O’Hara, and Penn Wood’s Elicia Moore.

Cohen, who is a freshman, Day, a sophomore, and juniors Fingerhut, Garrett, Theveny, and Till are the underclassmen named to the first team. Donnelly, Theveny, and Till picked up first-team honors for the second consecutive year.

The All-Delco team was selected by the Daily Times in consultation with area coaches.

Donnelly started running when he was “fairly young, doing road races and what-not.”

Forbes was the 2018 Daily Times Girls Track Runner of the Year after earning silver medals in the 800-meter run and 4 x 800-meter relay at the PIAA Class AAA Championships in May.

“I was busy this summer balancing working at Springhaven Country Club, training for soccer and cross country, and going on vacations with my family,” Forbes said. “My childhood coach (Glenn Venturini) sent me a letter two weeks before preseason (practice) which sparked my interest in solely running cross country.

“My family and I traveled to Brigantine Beach and I spent the majority of each day there contemplating if I should continue soccer or focus on running. On the last day, I finally made the difficult decision that it would be most beneficial to my happiness and my future if I were to make the switch to cross country.”

A loud roar of approval that August day probably came from Strath Haven coach Bill Coren when he learned of Forbes’ decision.

“I know she missed the girls on the soccer team, including her sister,” Coren said. “But she was such a pleasure to coach. The biggest thing was trying to hold her back on long runs. She was just going too fast, but her quote was always ‘I can’t run any slower than that.’”

All-Delco Volleyball: Early experiences shaped Cain into Player of the Year

CONCORD — Rachel Cain’s volleyball career took a drastic turn in the fall of 2015.

Cain was a freshman and not expected to see much, if any time on the varsity girls volleyball team at Garnet Valley. Then junior setter Gabby Davis, who would go on to earn All-Delco honors as a senior, rolled her ankle and Cain’s athletic career changed forever.

Suddenly, she was thrust into the starting lineup of a team that was dominated by seniors and juniors.

“It was eye-opening,” Cain said. “Gabby was an amazing setter and having to step in was a huge responsibility. It taught me a lot about leadership, friendship, responsibility and just volleyball in general. I think it was a great learning experience and I’m really thankful I got the chance.”

It wasn’t smooth sailing. There were moments of doubt.

“She was scared,” said Garnet Valley head coach Greg Wood, who was in his first season as an assistant coach under Mark Clark. “There were a lot of tears those first couple of days. “There were a lot of conversations that I had with her, telling her how good she was and how much I believed in her. It was hard. It was a good team with a lot of seniors and here was a freshman who a week before was worried about making the freshman and JV teams and now she’s starting varsity.”

“It was scary, but I had a great group of girls with me,” said Cain, who will play volleyball and study nursing at East Stroudsburg University. “They were very supportive. There were a lot of seniors on that team and they were just amazing to me. I’ll never forget how nice they were to me.”

That experience sowed the seeds for a career that would culminate in Cain being named All-Delco twice and the 2018 Daily Times Player of the Year.

“I remember telling her that this was not about now, this is about you being all-state as a senior,” Wood said. “This is about you being Player of the Year three, four years from now. To see how hard she’s worked and see where she is today, all those goals have come true. She’s one of the best players in the state and I’m just proud of her.

“She got to learn quickly. She was thrown right into the fire and never missed a beat. We had a lot of conversations early on. Being around that state championship team in 2016 really helped her, too. She was capable of running that team. We were fortunate to have two very good setters and it helped her grow as a player and as a leader.”

All Delco Volleyball Teams

Congratulations to the following Central League Volleyball players for being named to the All Delco teams.

1st Team

Rachel Cain, Garnet Valley– see article for Player of the Year

Ally Hartney, Garnet Valley: Hartney and Samantha Mann wreaked havoc in the middle for the Jaguars. Hartney’s ability to put balls away and block on the defensive end made Garnet Valley a tough out in tournament play. The senior middle blocker finished second on the team in kills (216) and blocks (77) while also recording 46 aces and 47 digs. She also turned in a whopping .413 hitting percentage. Hartney joined Cain and Emma Rokosky on the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State and All-District 1 teams.

Emma Rokosky, Garnet Valley: Rokosky’s all-around skills was one of the keys to Garnet Valley’s run to the PIAA Class 4A semifinals for the third year in a row. She was the perfect complement on the outside to Hartney and Mann in the middle and gave the Jaguars several options in the attack. A first-team Class 4A All-State and All-District 1 selection by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, the senior outside hitter racked up 180 kills, 215 digs, 37 aces, 10 blocks and had a .255 hitting percentage.

All Delco Girls Soccer Teams

Congratulations to the following Central League girls soccer players who were named to the All Delco Teams.

1st Team

Alison Durfee, Haverford: The senior goalkeeper capped four years as the starter by taking the Fords on their deepest districts run in program history. Durfee was in net two years ago when the Fords notched their first districts win; as a senior, she piloted the Fords into the District 1 Class 4A quarterfinals, shutting out Upper Dublin away from home and then tipping top-seeded Owen J. Roberts in the shootout in the second round, the Fords prevailing 3-0 in penalty kicks after Durfee made 13 saves over 110 scoreless minutes. In 22 games, Durfee allowed just 18 goals, keeping 11 clean sheets.

Sarah Hughes, Penncrest: An All-Delco defender last year, the center back’s switch to forward energized the Lions’ season en route to a return to states for a third straight year (this time in Class 4A) and a first states win. The Lions scored just five goals in their first 10 matches (outside of a 7-0 win over Upper Darby); with Hughes up top, they scored 11 in their last five regular-season matches to storm into districts as the 20th seed, then routed No. 13 Hatboro-Horsham, 4-0, behind a Hughes brace. The Lions upset No. 4 Central Bucks West and No. 5 Downingtown West in districts, then toppled District 4 champ Williamsport in the states opener. Hughes, an All-Central pick, finished the season with five goals and four assists and helped a Lions defense that allowed 18 goals in 25 games. Hughes will continue her career at Dickinson College.

Rebekah Cunningham, Haverford: The senior defender forged a formidable pairing with Britt Riegler in back-stopping a defense that allowed 18 goals in 22 matches. Cunningham was at the center of it, her steady clearances and sure-footed marking limiting opponents as the Fords advanced to the District 1 Class 4A quarterfinals. Cunningham also scored a goal and, as a prime set-piece server, delivered four assists. Cunningham was an All-Central selection.

Rylie Butler, Ridley: What the senior midfielder lacks in size, Butler made up for in smarts and tenacity. As the Green Raiders’ holding midfielder, she served as the key fulcrum between a senior-laden defense and a young but talented attack that guided the Green Raiders to their first ever District 1 tournament appearance and an 11-win season. With Butler repelling threats in midfield, the Green Raiders surrendered 21 goals in 19 games. Butler contributed four goals and five assists, including the only goal of the Green Raiders’ season-culminating win over Bensalem to ensure the districts berth.

Maggie Forbes, Strath Haven: Just a sophomore, the midfield dynamo makes her second All-Delco appearance. She helped power the top seed in the District 1 Class 3A tournament with six goals and six assists, pulling the strings deep in midfield for a club that allowed 15 goals in 19 games despite a sophomore- and junior-heavy roster. Forbes set up the only goal of a 1-0 win over Haverford and scored the overtime winner against Harriton. She accounted for both markers in a 2-1 win over Springfield. Forbes was named first-team All-Central and to the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association All-State team.

Alyssa Saito, Garnet Valley: The technical midfielder was the principle animator of Garnet Valley’s attack. She led the team with eight goals and added five assists to earn a spot on the All-Central team. Saito scored twice and set up a goal in the Jaguars’ early September win over Rustin, added the game-winner against Springfield and set up Regan Nealon’s late winner in a match vs. Ridley. The senior will continue her career at Haverford College.

Annalena O’Reilly, Haverford: The senior two-time All-Delco was the heart of the Fords’ run to the District 1 Class 4A quarterfinals. The do-everything midfielder assumed a more expansive role that in years past, often dropping deep to help the Fords control midfield. Still the Fords’ main offensive threat, she scored 16 goals and four assists. The All-Central first-teamer had the only goal in the districts upset of Upper Dublin and converted in penalties to lead the Fords past top-seeded Owen J. Roberts in the second round. O’Reilly will continue her career at Drexel University.
