Conestoga’s Sebastian Tis is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The senior midfielder was recently named the Pennsylvania Large School Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Other honors he received this fall are Central League Most Valuable Player, All-Southeast Pennsylvania team, all-state team and Regional All-American. He tallied 13 goals and 11 assists for the PIAA 4A state champion Pioneers, who compiled a perfect 26-0 record this past fall. Off the pitch during the past year, he has invested in the stock market as a hobby and spends most of his free time researching stocks. Conestoga boys soccer head coach Dave Zimmerman said, “Sebastian combines many qualities that make him an elite soccer player. His combination of size and speed make him very difficult to defend. In addition, Sebastian excels at keeping a ball and rarely loses it. Furthermore, he has very quick feet and excellent touch on the ball which makes him a dangerous 1v1 take on artist. Finally, Seb has a deadly shot both in the run of play and in direct kick situations. He can generate power and can place the ball precisely. As if all of that weren’t enough, Sebastian is the hardest working player on the team both in practice and in games.”

All-Delco Football: From ‘Tubby’ to talk of the town, Mills made history at Ridley

RIDLEY TWP. — Tahir Mills recently exposed the truth about his popular nickname.

“I used to eat a lot as a kid,” the Ridley senior said. “And my favorite show was the Teletubbies. People just started calling me ‘Tubby.’ After a while, I was a chubby kid and I just went with it.

“At first I was angry about it, but then it grew on me.”

That’s the name his teammates and coaches know him by. One of his best friends on the team, quarterback John Heller, was asked at one point this season to talk about Mills’s excellent game, one of many from the star running back. Heller faltered: “Who? Oh, you mean Tubby?”

“I guess Tubby is easier to say, too,” Mills said.

Fans of Ridley football cheered his name throughout the Green Raiders’ 13-2 journey this fall. Mills had one of the greatest seasons in Ridley history. He became Delaware County’s single-season rushing champion with 2,519 yards and 31 touchdowns. His 36 total touchdowns were one off of tying the county record.

Little kids flocked to him after games for autographs, some even asking their parents to make sure Santa gets them a No. 4 Ridley jersey for Christmas.

His impact on the field and on the youth of Ridley Township, many of whom will now aspire to be the next Tahir “Tubby” Mills, makes him the 2021 Daily Times Player of the Year.

Joining Mills on the All-Delco offensive team are quarterback John Heller (Ridley); running backs Mason Peterson (Bonner-Prendergast) and Shane Reynolds (Garnet Valley); receivers Sean Gallagher (Garnet Valley) and Robby Longo (Springfield); and linemen Nick Bozzetto (Bonner-Prendergast), Sam DiTrolio (Garnet Valley), Isaiah Boyd (Haverford School), Hayden Brown (Ridley) and Ethan Barrar (Strath Haven).

Defensive All-Delco honors go to linemen Ibrahim Sanogo (Academy Park), Nolan Brennan (Garnet Valley) and Julien Laventure; linebackers Noble Thompson (Chester), Joey Halloran (Garnet Valley), Damian Falcone (Radnor) and Chase Barlow (Strath Haven); and defensive backs Eric Willis (Academy Park), Staring Reaves (Chichester), C.J. Wood (Garnet Valley) and Matt Shuler (Strath Haven).

Charlie Box (Marple Newtown) and Max Busenkell (Garnet Valley) were selected for their all-purpose abilities. Ridley’s Nick Volpone is the kicker/specialist.

The All-Delco team is selected after consultation with local coaches.

All-Delco Cross Country: Fingerhut, Schwelm overwhelm as county’s best runners

UPPER PROVIDENCE — Penncrest’s Ruby Schwelm and Haverford High’s Ethan Fingerhut were destined to be runners.

Both come from running families.

Schwelm’s father, Bob, became an accomplished distance runner after playing soccer in college at Franklin & Marshall and is the co-owner of the Bryn Mawr Running Club.

“It’s nice having him there, my own coach,” Ruby Schwelm said of her father.

Fingerhut’s father, Randy, ran track in high school and his older brother, Josh, was a two-time All-Delco selection in cross country for the Fords, who now runs track and cross country at Washington & Lee University in Virginia.

“They’ve been running my whole life,” Ethan Fingerhut said. “I picked up on it.”

This year, Schwelm, a freshman, and Fingerhut, a senior, took their careers to new heights, earning medals at the PIAA Class 3A cross country championships and being named Runners of the Year to highlight the 2021 Daily Times All-Delco Cross Country team.

Joining Schwelm and Fingerhut on the All-Delco team are: Rowe Crawford, Hannah Prokup and Gwyneth Stach from Strath Haven, Camryn McGeehan of Haverford, Therese Trainer of Notre Dame and Kathryn Lynn from Episcopal Academy for the girls; Haverford High’s Patrick Lawson and Quentin Ryan, Luke Rodden and Jimmy Kutz from Radnor, Gavin Mogck of Penncrest and Strath Haven’s Benjamin Ent for the boys.

The team was selected by the Daily Times sports staff after consultation with county coaches.

Crawford and Trainer are the only repeat selections from 2019, the last time the team was chosen. Crawford, Lynn, Stach, Kurtz and Ent are seniors. Trainer, Ryan, Lawson and Mogck are juniors. Prokup and Rodden are sophomores and McGeehan is a freshman.

Schwelm is the first freshman to earn Runner of the Year honors since Sacred Heart’s Emma Seifried in 2014 and the first female from Penncrest to receive the honor since Chrissy Boyd went back-to-back in 1998 and 1999.

Fingerhut is the third Haverford athlete to earn Runner of the Year honors on the boys side, joining Mike Donnelly (2018) and Ed Donnelly (2009), who are not related.

As a freshman running varsity for the first time, Schwelm said she didn’t have high expectations, yet she went out and won the first three races of her career. She won the Northampton Invitational and took first in the only two Central League dual meets she ran in.

“I just wanted to see how things went,” Schwelm said “I ended up doing better than expected.”

All-Delco Boys Soccer: Boyle made history for Haverford team on the rise

HAVERFORD — Starting the season in midfield as he did, Sean Boyle didn’t have the number top of mind.

It would take time, as September wore into October and as his goals count ticked into double-digits, for the junior to get curious. He queried his coach, David Cassanelli, the last player from Haverford High School to be named the Daily Times’ Boys Soccer Player of the Year, if he might know what the most goals in a season by a Ford was. Ultimately, it took a trip into the digital archives by teammate Googie Seidman to settle on a figure: 20, by George Severini, a two-time All-Delco and 2003 graduate.

Once he had the target to aim at, Boyle – now installed as the team’s center forward – was off and running.

“It was definitely a motivator all season to get it,” he said “But also not just to get personal goals for myself, but I knew that if I got close to that goal, it would be helping the team.”

As Boyle got to where he wanted, the Fords followed. Boyle would score his 18th and 19th goals of the season in the first round of the District 1 Class 4A tournament, a 4-0 romp over Norristown. No. 20 would put Haverford on level terms at North Penn in the second round, before an ultimately heart-breaking 3-2 loss in the final minutes of regulation.

The overlap in Boyle’s and the team’s goals, brought both success. It’s also made him the 2021 Daily Times Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

Boyle is joined on the All-Delco team by teammate Mason Baylis; the Episcopal Academy trio of Tristan Whitaker, Jack Bonner and Sam Malloy; the Radnor pairing of Sebastian Kaper-Barcelata and Drew Warren; Haverford School goalkeeper Connor Cresswell; Delco Christian defender Max Cardone; Penncrest scorer Connor Kraycik; Ethan Birch of Strath Haven and Tim Comers of Garnet Valley.

All picks are first-timers, given last year’s hiatus in fall All-Delcos due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight selections are seniors, with three juniors (Bonner, Boyle and Comers) on the squad with the sophomore Cresswell. The All-Delco team is selected in consultation with area coaches.
