Silberstein, Gutowski connect in nick of time for Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Coryn Silberstein and Liv Gutowski go so far back as soccer teammates and friends that they can practically complete their own sentences.

When it comes to scoring goals for Springfield this year, one hand (or foot) is always helping the other, it seems. They grew up playing together for Continental FC and now Cougars varsity and FC Delco.

“Liv and I have been playing together forever, basically, since we were really young…”

“So we know how we play,” Gutowski added before Silberstein concluded.

And?

“I know she’ll always be able to get to the end of my balls,” Silberstein said. “I have several other assists to her as well.”

When they absolutely needed a goal in the final two minutes of the second overtime with visiting Radnor, Silberstein and Gutowski came through at the perfect time. Silberstein, a junior midfielder, fed sophomore striker Gutowski from roughly 25 yards out. Gutowski made the run, beating Radnor goalie Mallory Toomey to the ball in the nick of time, then unleashed a cross shot and the ball fell inside right corner of the cage.

Gutowski jumped for joy as the Cougars (8-1-1, 3-0-1 Central League) celebrated a 1-0 victory, handing Radnor (6-2-0, 3-1-0) its first league loss of the season. Coming into play Tuesday, Radnor was No. 1 in the District 1 Class 3A playoff rankings, while Springfield sat in 12th place in Class 4A.

“Over the years when we’ve played against Radnor, it’s always been a close game,” SIlberstein said. “We’ve been practicing really hard and we felt that this would be a really good game and that we would come out with the win.”

“I told the girls that you can bend, but don’t break,” Springfield coach Brian Coleman said. “We lost 1-0 to them in the (Central League) playoffs last and it was a really close game. This was a big one for us. If you look at the stats, it’s Coryn scoring and Liv giving it to her, it’s Liv scoring and Coryn giving it to her. They have played really well together and have been helping each other all season.”

Radnor controlled possession most of the way, but Springfield senior goalie Emily Boyer turned away all six shots on net. The visitors won most 50-50 balls and had several good runs to the cage. Defensively, the Cougars received outstanding play from senior Carly Walters and junior Anabel Kreydt.

“Our defenders box out and they get in position to win balls,” Coleman said. “They do really well for us back there and they’re not afraid to mix it up. I can’t say enough about our back line. I think that’s been a staple for us and they continue to keep us in games and play really well.”

Springfield’s Ava Hennessey played good balls all game and a few chances to score after halftime. Late in the second half Mia Valerio made a quick move to free herself, then uncorked a shot that clanked off the crossbar.

Toomey, a sophomore, was excellent in goal for Radnor with five saves. Teammate Julie Breedveld often connected with a running Jane Daiutolo to create scoring chances. Daiutolo sent a cross in the waning seconds of the first extra session, but her play was snuffed out by Boyer. Sophomore Seala Koleth showed quick feet and an ability to create chances. Kate Boujoukos played a tough and physical game. Radnor, it could be argued, played the better overall game, but couldn’t capitalize on the scoreboard.

Springfield knocked off one Central League giant in Radnor. Next up is a meeting with undefeated Lower Merion Thursday afternoon.

Wood keeps Garnet Valley firing in win over Ridley

RIDLEY TWP. — With so many hitters at her disposal, it’s easy to see how Garnet Valley junior setter Maddie Wood already has more than 1,200 assists in her career, even through only the equivalent of two full seasons of high school volleyball due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There’s senior Katelyn Duggery, juniors Kelly St. Germain, Marypearl Tienabeso, Kkaira Zakarian and Sara Weins. At one point this season, all have had a match with at least nine kills. Dugery, Tienabeso and Zakarian have all had matches with double-digit kills.

That’s a lot of options.

“It’s great,” Wood said. “I can definitely rely on all of them, and it’s great that they’re all different in their own way. It’s nice setting for them.”

That attack was the difference as the Jaguars remained undefeated in the Central League with a 3-0 triumph over Ridley Monday afternoon.

Zakarian led the attack with 11 kills. Weins had eight kills and two blocks. Tienabeso contributed seven kills and two blocks. St. Germain pitched in six kills in the 25-12, 25-13, 25-14 victory.

Wood, as usual, set the offense in motion with 33 assists. It was her sixth match of 30 or more helpers for the Jaguars (7-1, 5-0 Central League). She’s averaging better than 31 assists per match.

“She’s awesome,” Zakarian said of Wood. “She gives you the perfect set every time. She knows exactly what I can hit and she gets me where I have to be.”

As far as getting the ball to Wood so she can set up that plethora of hitters, well, that’s still a work in progress, Garnet Valley coach Mark Clark said.

“Our passing was better than the last game but we still have a ways to go,” Clark said. “The potential we have is there. We’re getting better and better on serve-receive and on defense. We’re moving more and talking more. It’s little things, that’s what we have to clean up.”

Wood seconded that sentiment.

“(Passing) is definitely one of our biggest weak points,” Wood said. “We’ve been working on it a lot in practice. We’re training really hard to get better at that every day. It’s not just our DSs (defensive specialists) or our liberos that have to pass, everyone has to pass so we work on that a lot and we’re getting better every day.”

Defense stands tall as Springfield blanks Upper Darby

Springfield’s defense has Upper Darby’s number.

Jake Rama ran for one score and threw for another, but it was the defense that stood tall as the Cougars blanked Upper Darby for the second year in a row, 21-0.

Springfield won last year’s meeting, 48-0, and has beaten the Royals three years in a row. The victory also was the second straight for the Cougars (3-2, 3-1 Central League).

The Cougars held the Royals to 19 yards rushing and 111 yards of total offense. Connor Roche led the defensive effort with seven tackles, including four for loss, and a fumble recovery. Makaih Crawford also had seven tackles, and Matt Dickinson picked off a pass.

The game was scoreless until Rama scored from one yard out on a quarterback sneak with 10:27 to play in the first half. It stayed that way until Roche bulled in from the one-yard line with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter. Rama hooked up with Aidan Kreydt with 56 seconds left in the game to close out the scoring.

Rama completed 16 of 23 passes for 208 yards. Robby Longo was on the receiving end five times for 67 yards, and Kreydt had four receptions for 48 yards.

In nonleague action:

Governor Mifflin 49, Episcopal Academy 26 >> It’s easy to see why Nicholas Singleton is ranked as the No. 1 running back recruit in the country and is headed to Penn State.

Singleton scored all six touchdowns as the Mustangs jumped out to a 42-6 halftime lead in a battle of unbeaten teams.

The 6-0, 210-pound senior set the tone early when he returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown. That was just a warmup.

He added touchdown runs of seven and 19 yards to give the Mustangs (5-0) a 21-0 lead after one quarter. He then ripped off scoring runs of 63 and 55 yards to balloon that advantage to 35-0, and then ripped off a 60-yard jaunt to give the Mustangs a 36-point lead at the break.

Not looking ahead, Ridley takes of business with Radnor rout

RIDLEY TWP. — Though facing rebuilding projects on offense, defense and special teams, Ridley High football coach Dave Wood figured he would have the proper tools this season.

The only question: Would he be able to beat an unofficial deadline?

By Friday, when they defeated Radnor, 45-14, at Phil Marion Field, the Green Raiders had met their unstated goal. There they were at 4-0 in the Central League and ready for a visit from unbeaten Garnet Valley in the latest first-place showdown in a decades-long series of such challenges at Phil Marion Field.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said quarterback John Heller, after passing for three touchdowns and running for another. “Garnet has been one of the best for the past, who-knows. We haven’t been the best over the seasons.

“But the thing is, we’re the best we’ve been in a while.”

Heller threw for 254 yards, and Tahir Mills rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns as the Green Raiders avoided a potential look-ahead trap. Four Ridley players — Nahaj Saleem, Paul Jackson, Mills and Sean Harrington — had at least 48 receiving yards each.

Early in the season, it was evident that Ridley would be a handful on defense, as it was again Friday, three times stumping the Raptors (1-4, 1-3 Central) in the red zone. The offense, though, might’ve taken a while longer to develop.

Behind the big-play potential of Mills, it has developed.

“It’s been our motivation,” Mills said. “And we just have that chip. We’ve always been getting beat. We’ve always been the underdogs. But this year, we just want to win. We want to be the best. Tonight, we were doing it all, in the air and on the floor.”

Mills gave Ridley an early lead, slicing through the Raptors for an 18-yard touchdown. Radnor, however, answered on the ensuing kickoff, hinting at a handoff, then setting Tommy DeShan loose for a 75-yard TD.

A couple of second-quarter Heller scoring passes to Paul Jackson provided Ridley with some separation. But Radnor quarterback Jude Wallin kept it tight with a tough, 15-yard keeper for a score.

A 42-yard Mills burst helped put Heller in business for his touchdown with 4:21 left in the half, but Radnor again stirred when Damien Falcone reached the Ridley three with a 37-yard reception. The Green Raiders, though, didn’t break and led, 28-14, at halftime.

“We’ve got to finish when we’re in the red zone,” Radnor coach Tom Ryan said. “It’s really that simple. As I tell them, I never question how hard we play. Our kids played hard. We just made some mistakes. You’ve got to score when you’re inside the 20 and unfortunately that didn’t happen.

Central showdown evolves into lopsided win for Garnet Valley

NETHER PROVIDENCE — The most anticipated football game in Delaware County this year featured Garnet Valley and Strath Haven, two of three undefeated Central League teams entering play Friday.

The showdown marked the final meeting between Delco’s two winningest coaches, Strath Haven’s Kevin Clancy and GV’s Mike Ricci, who will retire after the season. Considering how well both teams have performed, the throngs of fans in attendance likely expected a competitive game.

Alas, the game didn’t quite live up to expectations on the scoreboard. The Jags were in complete control from the opening kick at a jam-packed George L. King Field, rolling to a 42-7 win. Garnet Valley (5-0, 4-0) is now one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the Central League, and will travel to Ridley next week to face the Green Raiders, who improved to 5-0 with a victory Friday night over Radnor.

Compared to the rest of the league, however, Garnet Valley is on another planet right now. The Jaguars are just way too good, too big, too fast. Against the Panthers, that was evident from the very start.

Haven’s dominant ground attack, a three-headed monster of Chase Barlow, Matt Shuler and Anthony Crawford, was held in check all night against the Jags’ excellent defensive front including big, bad linemen Cole Brennan, Kieran Gallagher and Austin Sorokanych. There was no place to run against the physically imposing trio.

“Strath Haven is a really good offense. They execute just like our offense goes out and executes every week,” Brennan said. “The practice we got in against ourselves during the summer, and the practice we had against our scout team this week, really prepared us for this game. The scout team creates a picture perfect image of what the team we’re playing that week is, and that had us ready.”

By halftime, the game was essentially out of reach, with the Jags enjoying a 28-0 lead. Haven’s rush attack, which has destroyed defenses through the first month of the season, was limited to 55 yards on 21 carries and one fumble lost in the first two quarters. Those numbers improved a little in the second half, once Garnet Valley’s first-team defense exited in the third quarter. Crawford led the way with 86 yards on 21 carries, while Barlow (34 yards) accounted for the team’s lone touchdown with 3:09 left to play.

Garnet Valley’s offense was equally impressive. After punting away the opening drive, the Jags’ first-team unit scored on its final six possessions. Senior quarterback Max Busenkell got it started with a 46-yard keeper to the end zone to make it 7-0. Following an interception by linebacker Andrew Jackalous, Busenkell connected with his favorite target Sean Gallagher on a 21-yard scoring pass with 43 seconds to play in the first period.

Lead running back Jason Bernard (70 yards, nine carries) rumbled into the end zone from five yards out to put GV ahead by three touchdowns. Then, in the waning seconds of the second quarter, GV capped another excellent drive when Ryan Saunders plowed his way past the goal line from a yard out.

Ricci couldn’t have asked for a better all-around performance from his squad.

“I was thrilled with our execution on offense, defense and special teams,” he said. “That’s a very good offense that Strath Haven has … and to stop their offense is just a testament to our guys. I can’t say enough. Jeff Allison, our defensive coordinator and the defensive staff, do a phenomenal job teaching and getting our guys ready to go. Offensive coordinator Rich Boyd and the offensive coaches, they do the same, and we executed equally well on offense. I have such respect for everything that Strath Haven does. We knew we had to be on point in order to succeed tonight, and our kids really rose to the challenge.”

Marple Newtown draws up some trickery to top Haverford

NEWTOWN SQUARE — In every football season, there are stories about unusual occurrences that the narrator concludes by saying “you just can’t make something like that up.”

At Marple Newtown, the Tigers are accustomed to having head coach Chris Gicking ‘making up’ plays a day or two before a game and then asking his players to execute whatever is required of them under the Friday night lights.

With Haverford High in town for a Central League contest Friday, Gicking’s creativity and the Tigers ability to do what they were told led to a touchdown early in the first half and another late in the third quarter that helped Marple Newtown claim a 49-16 decision over the Fords in a game that saw several shifts in momentum before the final swing toward the home team.

Marple (3-2 overall, 2-2 Central League) scored on its first play from scrimmage, led at halftime, 21-0, then saw the Fords (2-3, 1-3) cut their deficit to 21-16 before things turned the Tigers way.

“I am so proud of these players and coaches,” Gicking said. “Everything starts with practice, and we just had our best week of practice. They came out tonight with attitude and they were focused and played with energy and enthusiasm, which led to better execution.”

The play Marple executed in the second minute of the game involved a backward pass from quarterback David Bertoline to receiver Eric McKee, who then found Cooper Conroy behind the defense and put the ball in his hands. When Conroy stopped running, he had completed a 64-yard scoring play.

“Haverford is a good football team with a lot of weapons,” Gicking said. “We wanted to get something going right from the start.”

The idea for the play started in the gym after the Tigers were forced to practice indoors because of the heavy rainstorm Thursday afternoon.

“I was ready for it,” Conroy said. “It worked in practice, and I’m glad it worked again today.”

Haverford’s next possession ended with a fumble, one of five turnovers by the Fords. Four minutes later, Charlie Box, who had to fight through the stubborn Haverford defense to get 60 yards on 23 carries, had the first of his three short scoring runs.

Early in the second quarter, Damien Bogsch grabbed another Fords loose ball and took off on a 55-yard jaunt for the third MN touchdown.

Mike Ricci and Kevin Clancy square off one last time

The two winningest football coaches in Delaware County history will meet one last time Friday night.

Mike Ricci will retire from Garnet Valley after the 2021 season. His Jaguars (4-0) are locked in a three-way tie for first place in the Central League with Kevin Clancy’s Strath Haven squad and Ridley.

Ricci is second only to Clancy in career coaching wins. The Jaguars gave Ricci his 250th win last Friday against Upper Darby. Meanwhile, the Panthers rolled past Harriton for Clancy’s 323rd victory.

Since Garnet Valley is a Class 6A program and Strath Haven is Class 5A, a district playoff game between the teams is out of the question.

The legendary coaches will clash Friday night at George L. King Field. Ricci didn’t want to make it seem the game was about him and Clancy when asked to describe his feelings about the final showdown. It’s about two strong, undefeated programs, Ricci said, going head-to-head in what should be a memorable battle. Each team is trying to hand the other its first loss of the year, which will go a long way in determing the league championship.

“I’m not looking at it as my last time against Kevin as much as I am that it’s a great opportunity for a fantastic high school football game,” Ricci said. “The environment is going to be spectacular. I know our kids are looking forward to it, I know their kids are looking forward to it. To me it’s what high school football is all about. They’re a class act program and I always love playing against class acts.”

Ricci has immense respect for his friend Clancy. When Ricci was a young coach at Garnet Valley in the 90s, he sought advice from Clancy and Interboro’s Steve Lennox on how to build a successful football program from the ground up.

“When I started, Coach Clancy was the guy and Strath Haven was the team,” Ricci said Wednesday. “A lot of the things that we do in our program are based off of what I’ve watched Strath Haven do for years. I have such respect for Coach Clancy for the kind of person he is and I think he’s a phenomenal coach.

“One of the things that I love about playing Strath Haven is … you know they’ll be prepared, you know that they’re going to have an answer for anything you try to do. To me, it makes it a really fun game, especially this year. This is a big game. Both teams are 4-0, they’re playing extremely well and they’re executing their offense like the heyday Strath Haven teams. I love their quarterback (Sam Milligan) and their three running backs (Chase Barlow, Anthony Crawford, Matt Shuler), everything they do. (Assistant coach) Jim Conner does an amazing job with their defense.”

Mills, Heller help Ridley to thrilling win over Springfield

RIDLEY TWP. — Five years had passed since Ridley High started a football season with three consecutive wins.

By Ridley’s standards, that’s far too long.

The winningest program in Delaware County history has won at least seven games in every non-pandemic shortened season under coach Dave Wood (last year the team was 3-3 overall). The high-water mark of 11 victories happened in 2016, when Ridley captured its 23rd Central League championship after beginning the year with a 3-0 record.

After Friday’s slugfest with rival Springfield, it’s obvious Ridley means business and expects to win a lot of games this fall. So far, the Green Raiders are picture perfect.

Tahir Mills scored via a 88-yard punt return as well as a 77-yard rush and quarterback John Heller threw for 135 yards and two touchdown passes as Ridley survived Springfield, 33-28, in a back-and-forth battle between heated rivals Friday at Phil Marion Field.

“This feels like a Super Bowl win,” senior guard Khalil Blagmon said. “We’re the first team at Ridley in five years to go 3-0 and the last time we did this, we won the Central League. It feels great.”

While the Green Raiders will focus on conquering Haverford next week, there’s no mistake they are a team primed to make a run at a Central League crown. In a season where Garnet Valley is the presumed favorite, Ridley is happy it can throw its hat back into the ring.

For the first time in several years, the Green Raiders possess a complete offense. They have a quarterback in Heller who can air the ball out to a slew of weapons. Senior wide receiver Sean Harrington hauled in four balls for 41 yards. Heller’s 24-yard TD pass to Harrington with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter put the Green Raiders back in front by two scores. It proved to be the difference.

In the first quarter, Heller hooked up with sophomore Kaheem Powell for the first touchdown of the game.

“We have a lot of different guys who can make plays,” Heller said.

For far too long Ridley has failed to produce a consistent passing attack. But now the Green Raiders, the Quarterback High of Delco, seem to have the right personnel to open the playbook.

“We just bought in from the offseason and we put our mind toward the same goal,” Heller said. “Now that it’s our senior season, we didn’t want to come out here and be average again. We all have that one goal and we’re all working for it.”
