Boys Lacrosse: Springfield freshman lending Long hand to Cougars’ attack

SPRINGFIELD — Kyle Long’s assessment of his game is succinct and elegantly simple, whether he’s holding a basketball or a lacrosse stick.

“Lacrosse is very similar to basketball,’ Long said last week after his Springfield team bludgeoned Ridley, 13-4. “It’s just spacing.’

What stands out most about Long is the spacing in his stats this season. The freshman (which makes his mere elevation to a regular cog in Springfield’s attacking rotation all the more remarkable) is fifth in Delaware County with 25 assists. At 2.27 assists per game, he’s second in the county, trailing only Haverford School’s Grant Ament (42 assists in 16 games, a 2.63 average).

Track and Field: Kitchin has Penncrest cooking in Penn Relays 4 x 400

PHILADELPHIA — It’s been all about order for Penncrest’s Megan Kitchin at the Penn Relays.

“When I was a freshman, I didn’t run in the varsity (4 x 400) race,’ Kitchin, a Lions junior, said. “I ran the 4 x 100 and we were third. Last year we were second in the varsity 4 x 400, and now today we won the 4 x 400.’

Kitchin was referring to Penncrest’s victory in the Central League 4 x 400-meter relay at the 121st Penn Relays at Franklin Field Thursday. Katie Arbogast ran the first leg, followed by Briana Artis, Kitchin and Alicia Collier as the Lions took first place and the championship plaque for the second time in three years.

Baseball: Strath Haven goes on offense to back Eiel

NETHER PROVIDENCE — It was evident early Thursday afternoon that Strath Haven pitcher Matt Eiel had brought his best stuff to battle against Ridley. Then again, for a Panthers team that has kept opponents to three runs or less in each of its previous six games, mound excellence wasn’t much in question.

The mystery for Haven, Thursday and through most of the season, has been whether the bats would show up. Against Ridley they did, early and often.

The Haven offense assembled one of its most consistent performances, stringing together 12 hits and four scoring innings in a 7-0 Central League win.

Boys Lacrosse: Late rally not enough for Haverford

HAVERFORD — The unseasonable cold did little to stop a determined Harriton squad. A sloppy Haverford effort only helped.

The Rams, behind a second-half onslaught, beat the Fords, 10-7, Thursday in a Central League match. It was a key victory in the league and for playoff positioning, and Harriton, distancing itself after a 2-2 halftime tie, made the most of it.

Girls Track & Field: McLaughlin’s career is just starting to jump

RIDLEY TWP. — Try as he might, Ridley girls track coach Greg Stanzcuk could not get Valerie McLaughlin to take the sport seriously as a sophomore and into her junior year.

Heck, it took three of her friends, Lydia Garay, Maddy Moore and Brittany Shields, to convince McLaughlin to come out for the indoor track team as a junior, and that wasn’t until Thanksgiving in 2013.

All of the sudden, though, things changed. The young lady who never said a word and occasionally missed practice has developed into an exemplary team leader and one of the most versatile athletes in the county.

Boys Lacrosse: Springfield’s defense smothers Ridley in victory

SPRINGFIELD — In complete control in the fourth quarter Tuesday night, Springfield’s substitution box was an unusually crowded place.

As Ridley powered up the field after a rare turnover, you could see two or three defensive midfielders, after 40-some minutes of exertion, clamoring and crawling over each other to get on the field. To play defense.

That kind of effort typified Tuesday’s 13-4 drubbing of Central League rival Ridley, and it exemplifies the mentality coach Tom Lemieux has worked hard to instill in his Cougars.

Baseball: Garnet Valley’s Morandini carries on a familiar name

MARPLE — For parts of nine seasons, the name “Morandini’ was penciled into lineups at Veterans Stadium. A decade and a half after Mickey Morandini’s retirement, there’s another baseball player flying the family’s flag in the Delaware Valley.

Senior Griffin Morandini, the second of the Dandy Little Glove Man’s three sons, is upholding the family tradition at Garnet Valley, where he’s entrenched himself as the starting center fielder for the Jags in his second season at the school since he and his family moved from Indiana to be closer to their father’s budding coaching career.

Girls Lacrosse: Springfield comes on strong in victory

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield’s girls lacrosse team wanted this one real bad.

In a rematch of last season’s District One and PIAA championship games, Springfield and Garnet Valley clashed at Halderman Field Tuesday afternoon on similar trajectories.  Both teams had more questions than answers coming into the year, yet there was never any doubt they are two of the top teams in the Central League.

They may look different, with several of 2014’s key players off at top-flight college programs, but the rivalry remains as heated today as it was on that sunny June 2014 afternoon in Hershey.
