Swimming: That winning feeling returns as Haverford’s Hart downs record

PHILADELPHIA >> Five times in her storied high school career, Haverford’s Maddie Hart has risen to the top step of the District One podium at La Salle University’s Kirk Natatorium. Friday’s ascent held the same wonderment for the senior. Hart claimed her fourth career individual District One Class AAA title by besting the field in the 100 butterfly, setting a district and Delaware County record in 54.03 seconds.

The time undercuts the mark set by West Chester East’s Christina Leander in 2013, Hart’s freshman year, one of the few instances in which she was denied gold. Hart’s time is quicker than the 54.14 she turned in last year at states, the previous Delco mark. With all those plaques and trophies, you might think the luster has faded. Not so for the jovial Hart.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it,” the reigning Daily Times female swimmer of the year and last year’s District One Class AAA most outstanding swimmer said. “… After finishing the 100 fly, I looked up at the scoreboard and, I don’t know, it puts a smile on your face. I just remember all four years, and that always happened. You just look up at the scoreboard and you’re like, ‘I like that.’ It’s a great feeling.”

The swim could’ve been faster had Hart not gotten caught between strokes at the wall, gliding home a fraction before the onrushing Brittany Weiss of Pennridge to claim her third straight fly title. Weiss, a frequent foil for Hart down the years, took home second in 54.22, also under Leander’s mark. Hart’s time nearly fulfilled one of the main goals driving her this year.

“I like setting really high goals, goals that scare you,” she said. “I remember in the beginning of the year when I sat down with (coach) Matt (Stewart), I said, ‘I want to go 53 by the end of the year.’ That was like, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. That’s a scary thing to say.”

Radnor’s Julia Cullen finished fourth in 55.84, among the five automatic berths to the PIAA Championships.

Swimming: Conestoga’s McKenrick wins 2nd gold at District 1 champs

PHILADELPHIA >> A year ago, Conestoga’s Brian McKenrick rode home from districts with a gold and silver medal. Though he was pleased, he was never fully satisfied. On Saturday, he capped off the second day of the 2016 District 1 Class AAA Championships at La Salle University’s Kirk Natatorium with another gold, bringing his final count to two top times.

“This is amazing, I never expected to be going home with two gold medals,” he said. “My goal was just to get here and post better times than I did last year. So to come and earn to medals, it’s unreal.”

McKenrick was also presented the John E. Schwering Memorial Award, given for the outstanding swimmer in the  100 back, after he posted a 49.67. That shattered his silver mark of 50.52 from the year prior.

“This is an absolute honor,” he said admiring the memorial plaque. “I don’t think I can ever forget this moment…or this weekend.”

McKenrick’s top finishes pushed Conestoga to a fourth place finish in the AAA rankings. Upper Dublin took first with 292 points followed by North Penn with 236. West Chester Henderson finished 10th with 79 while Downingtown East was 11th with 77.5 and Avon Grove 12th with 71. Lower Moreland captured the AA crown with 381 points followed by Upper Moreland with 286. Bishop Shanahan finished seventh with 176 points at the conclusion of the two-day meet. Just a day after earning a gold medal, Conestoga freshman Brendan Burns capped his meet with a bronze medal.

The freshman finished third in the 100 back, posting a 50.40 to finish behind McKenrick and Avon Grove’s Justin Carey (50.32). Burns also anchored Conestoga’s fourth-place 400 free relay, which touched in 3:11.54.

“This has been a great meet,” he said afterward. “Yesterday (Friday) I was definitely feeling a lot more nerves before I swam. Today, though, I just concentrated on putting up better times and doing what I can to move on.”

Boys Basketball: Ridley ramps up defense in historic win

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> Ridley celebrated a win for the ages Saturday. Fittingly, the Green Raiders reached the school milestone with defense, Julian Wing taking charge in a 50-34 triumph over Wilson West Lawn in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA state tournament. Wing held Bulldogs sniper Christian Sload to just one bucket in the first half and five points when the score was relevant, as the Green Raiders matched a single-season school record with their 27th victory. The historic game was played at Strath Haven, where Ridley prevailed earlier this season during its unbeaten ride to the Central League championship.

“I told the kids that we’re playing for a state win and you guys are playing for the best overall record at Ridley High School,” coach Mike Snyder said. “It’s a big deal. When we came into the season we didn’t know what to expect. We lost some players. We knew we had some good players back but we didn’t have great size. But we play good defense and we just do as well as we can with the players we have. They’ve done a great job. I mean, to only have two losses at this point in the season is very remarkable.”

The Green Raiders (27-2) oppose Parkland, a 71-49 winner over Conestoga, in the second round of the state tournament.

Wing will be ready. He limited Sload to just 14 points. It was no easy task, considering Sload scored 37 points in one start and was dropping in 20 almost every time out. Of course, there is tough and then there’s Ridley Tough.

Ice Hockey: Haverford goes with best for last … and then some in Flyers Cup upset

ASTON >> Haverford went to the power play nursing a one-goal lead with 3:57 to play against Ridley. Fords coach John Povey sent out his top unit of Kenny Kissinger and Marcus DiPrimio on the blue line, Mitchell Estes, Frankie McVeigh and Shane Moran up front. That quintet didn’t leave the ice again.

“If I’m going to lose, I’m going to lose with my top players on the ice,” Povey said. “They gave everything they had.” With the help of a timeout at the 1:53 mark, Kissinger and company closed out the No. 4 Green Raiders 2-1 as No. 13 Haverford advances to the quarterfinals of the AA Flyers Cup.

“I wasn’t losing that game, that’s for sure,” Kissinger said of the grueling final four minutes. “I was going to do whatever I had to do to make sure we got the ‘w’ tonight. Whether I was tired or not, I was staying out there.”

The upset couldn’t be entirely unexpected, even if Ridley came into the game riding high off a Central League title and a 19-1-1 season. The Fords gave the Green Raiders a good battle last Wednesday in a 4-2 defeat in the Central semifinals. And as their coach asserted, the more times you play a team, the more difficult the games become.

“The one thing I said to (them) is we’re a good hockey team,” Povey said. “We are, and obviously we didn’t have success against them in the regular season (a 5-1 Raiders win) and in the playoffs. I said to them, ‘It’s very tough to beat a good team three times.’” Haverford decided early that its top horses would play and play a lot. Povey double-shifted the Estes-McVeigh-Moran line, which combined for 154 regular season points, starting in the first period. The coach took a similar approach with his defensemen led by Kissinger and DiPrimio, who was playing just his fifth game of the season due to injury.

Swimming: Conestoga swimmers win Central League championship

The Conestoga High School swimming and diving teams, which posted undefeated Central League regular season records, performed well at the Central League Meet Feb. 17-20.

This was the first time the Central League Meet winners would be co-champions with the dual meet season winners, so the Conestoga girls and boys had to win the CL meet to be sole champions. The point formula included 20 points for each season win, so both Pioneer squads entered the CL Meet with a 20 point advantage over their closest competitor. With their undefeated season earning the Conestoga boys 20 points going into the Central League Meet, their 428.5 point total after the CL Meet put them seven points ahead of Radnor, and made the Pioneer boys both Central League dual meet season and Central League overall champions.

When the Conestoga boys team got ready for their first swimming event, they had 13 points Devin Gaul earned with his sixth-place finish on the boards during the diving championship portion of the meet.

The CL boys meet began with a Stoga victory by the ‘A’ quad in the 200 medley relay, with Brian McKenrick, Kevin Jay, Kevin Ryle, and Oliver Brown beating the second place relay by more than two seconds, with the Stoga ‘B’ relay of Owen Neuman, Aidan McKenrick, Aidan Hunter, and Louis Conroy scoring in 10th place.
