Girls Lacrosse: ‘Scary’ Garnet Valley starts fast in win

CONCORD — Garnet Valley All-Delco lacrosse player Emily Mathewson said it first, then coach Jenny Purvis echoed the sentiment. “Let’s be scary in May.’

That’s the motto of the 2015 Garnet Valley girls lacrosse program. When you’re the defending state champions, you can get away with saying those types of things. The Jaguars are showing they can be a completely different team in the postseason.

“Our regular season, we know it was going to be a rebuilding time,’ said Mathewson, referencing the Jaguars’ up-and-down year that resulted in a 10-8 record. “Also, the last time we played (Haverford), we only beat them by two. We wanted to prove that we could get after them more.’ Oh yeah, the Jaguars certainly proved that they can.

Boys Lacrosse: Small victories add up for Garnet Valley

CONCORD — For just a brief moment, Alex Middleman saw opportunity. The Garnet Valley defender had been fooled a few times by Abington’s Cameron Leach Thursday afternoon. But with just over two minutes left in their District One second-round collision and the Jaguars nursing a lead, Middleman saw a chance to prevent the slippery Leach from adding to his total of four goals.

“He spun right into me,’ Middleman said. “I saw the opportunity and I took advantage of it. (Joey) Granahan was doing an awesome job on him. He held him up, I was right there to try a poke to get the ball away from him.’

The execution of that little play by Middleman was one of many battles won by Garnet Valley, and stacked together, they summed to a 10-8 win for the top-seeded Jags.

Boys Lacrosse: Ridley seeks to clear second-round hurdle

RIDLEY — Ticking down to what he hopes aren’t the last 48 minutes of his high school lacrosse career, there’s no need for Nolan Fox to mince words. The senior midfielder has seen his Ridley squads make the District One Tournament in each of his four seasons. In the three previous instances, he has watched them bow out in the second round.

On the eve of his last shot at redemption, Fox and his teammates had no reason to hide from history at practice Wednesday, not as they sought to prevent it from repeating.

Softball: Winkelman, Springfield complete perfect regular season

Taylor Winkelman’s fly ball was deep enough to score Kaylee Lennon in the 11th inning Tuesday, and that would finally be good enough for Springfield’s softball team to survive an oh-so tough challenge posted by Cardinal O’Hara.

What would go down as Winkelman’s fifth RBI of the game boosted Springfield to a 10-9 victory over its nearby rival, which gives the Cougars a perfect 19-0 record heading into the postseason. Winkelman also had a double and triple among her four hits in support of winning relief pitcher Tori DePietro, who pitched the last seven innings.

Boys Lacrosse: Haverford’s Melfe can’t quite contain Conestoga

TREDYFFRIN — Five months ago, Haverford’s Noah Melfe wasn’t thinking about who his Fords would play in the first round of the District One Tournament.

The junior was considering a switch from baseball, the sport he’d primarily played in his youth. He was pondering the opening for a JV goaltender that his lacrosse friends had mentioned. And having never picked up a lacrosse stick, with his only qualification to be a lacrosse goalie being that he’d worn a chest protector as a catcher in his baseball past, he was thinking about something else.

“Five months ago, I thought I was probably going to be the worst lacrosse player ever,’ Melfe said. “I wouldn’t imagine being here now.’

Boys lacrosse: Harriton’s Jack Veasey is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The senior midfielder and captain led the Harriton boys lacrosse squad in points and assists, with 22 goals and 19 assists as of May 11. The Rams are enjoying their best season since 2001, and Harriton boys’ lacrosse head coach Joe Proud said, “We rely on Jack for his defensive and ‘ between the lines’ play more than any other two-way midfielder on the team. He plays wing on the face-offs, is called on to clear the ball and to possess the ball at the end of the game when we are in the lead. While his stats are strong, he does so many things for us that don’t show up for his personal stats, but have made it possible for us to win games.’

Boys Lacrosse: Cohesive Marple Newtown is ready for postseason

NEWTOWN SQUARE — Like every other aspect of Marple Newtown’s season, the question posed to Billy Morgan at practice Monday has to be answered in the proper frame of reference.

Does he regard the Tigers’ qualification for the District One boys lacrosse tournament, the program’s first playoff appearance in 12 years, as unexpected?

Had you asked Morgan before the season, the answer would’ve been an emphatic no. But that was before two of the team’s starting attackmen — Tyler Kostack (after just two games) and Tom Higgins (who scored 35 goals in 12 games) — suffered season-ending injuries, before five key members of the squad, including Morgan for the season’s first six contests with a shoulder injury, missed time.

Girls Lacrosse: Haverford has a chance to make some noise

UPPER DARBY — The Central League is well-represented in the District One girls lacrosse tournament, which gets under way Tuesday. Tenth-seeded Haverford is one team from the Central League, which has long been the dominated girls lacrosse conference in the state, performing the role of darkhorse.

Last spring, the Fords defeated Souderton in the opening round before a season-ending loss to Harriton. Several key players from that 2014 team — seniors Jess Lyons and Mairead Janzer, and junior Tess Horan, to name a few — look to redeem themselves in 2015. Haverford has the pieces to make a deep run.
