HAVERFORD — A case could be made that No. 3 Harriton won its District One girls lacrosse tournament semifinal over second-seeded Radnor in the first five minutes of regulation Tuesday night.
Sometimes, all it takes is a fast start, and Harriton set quite a tone from the opening draw.
They weren’t messing around.
The Rams scored five straight goals in the first 5:16 and were able to maintain a consistent attack the entire distance. The result was a 13-11 triumph over the Raiders, propelling the Rams into the District One final Thursday night at West Chester East. Meanwhile, Radnor will play a third-place game against top-seeded Conestoga, which was upset by No. 4 Great Valley earlier in the night at Haverford High.

CONCORD — Rachel Warden made two plays that saved Garnet Valley’s season Thursday at Moe DeFrank Stadium.
First, the junior defender did something in the District One fifth-place game against Springfield that she doesn’t do very often. With the score tied and the clock ticking late in the second half, Warden became the aggressor with the ball in her stick. She took a page from her big sister Haley’s book, crashing the net with the intent to do damage.
She kicked up speed around midfield and made a beeline to the net. Warden drew a hard foul and converted a free shot, sending a laser past Springfield goalie Julianne Clemons, to give Garnet Valley a lead it would not relinquish in a thrilling, 15-14 victory.

UPPER DARBY — Donovan St. Louis had a decision to make after the senior from Upper Darby qualified for PIAA Track & Field Championships in the Class AAA 200- and 400-meter dashes, as well as the 4 x 400-meter relay.
Does he run in all three events or cut one out so he can be strong in two races?
It wasn’t an easy choice. Being a competitor, St. Louis wanted to run in all three races. However, since the three races are among the last five events each day, and the 200 has a preliminary round Friday as well as semifinals and a final Saturday, which means he would run in seven events over two days if he made the final in each event, all in the latter portion of the meet, St. Louis decided to concentrate on the 400 and 4 x 400.

WEST GOSHEN — Walking off the field after a forgettable third quarter Thursday, no one on Springfield’s sideline felt lower than Mike Gerzabek.
Just 46 seconds earlier, Gerzabek had a golden look in the open field up a man to finish his hat trick and break open a tie game. Instead, he was stoned by Conestoga’s John Roulston, who outletted for Chris Brady to score with 8 ticks left in the frame and give the Pioneers their first lead of the day.
“You just have to shake it off,’ Gerzabek said. “You’re going to have your ups and downs. The game is about runs. He made a nice save, and I have to fight back and get the next one.’
When the next one floated his way 77 seconds into the fourth quarter, he made no mistake.

LOWER MERION — Springfield coach Tom Lemieux isn’t shy about his expressing his thoughts, to or about his team. So the excitement he showed Sunday afternoon when his No. 4 seeded Cougars downed No. 5 Spring-Ford, 9-8, in the District One quarterfinals to earn a berth in the PIAA Tournament was genuine and profound.
“If you would’ve told me two months ago that we were going to states, I probably would’ve laughed at you,’ he said. “They’ve surprised me, they’ve surprised everybody, and I couldn’t be happier for this group of kids.’
Springfield’s growth brings them within two wins of a district title, a path that will go through Central Bucks East Tuesday night at West Chester Henderson. Faceoff is at 6.

HAVERFORD — With a clipboard and what he calls his thunder whistle in hand, Paul Bogosian begins each practice with teaching moments.
On the eve of the District One Class AAAA playoffs, the lesson du jour at Friday’s practice is simple, fundamental: Rounding first base aggressively in anticipation of outfield bobbles.
After four decades coaching baseball, the head man at Haverford knows how to tailor his message toward each group of players that matriculates through his program.

LOWER MERION — The task was simple for Conestoga’s Tommy Sopko.
“I knew I had to go to goal,’ the sophomore attacker said. “I just looked to shoot, that was my favorite shot.’
Sopko’s unassisted goal with seven seconds remaining lifted the Pioneers to a state-tournament-berth-clinching 9-8 victory over Penncrest Saturday at Harriton High School in the quarterfinals of the District One Tournament.

CALN — The javelin beats golf and fishing in the realm of father-and-son recreation for the Sings.
It was obvious Saturday when Penncrest High senior Evan Sing launched a postcard-perfect throw of 194-8 to vaporize the field in the Class AAA PIAA Track and Field championships at Coatesville High and earn his third straight trip to states.
The moment the javelin left Sing’s hand, his father, long-time Delaware Country resident Dr. Robert Sing, let his fourth child know it was a winner. They talk between every throw. They watch video of throws. They review fundamentals from the Doc’s book, “The Dynamics of the Javelin Throw.’ Robert Sing qualified in the javelin for the 1980 Olympics. That’s the year the U.S. boycotted the games.

CALN — Upper Darby gave dominant Cheltenham a bit of a push at the District One track and field championships Saturday at Coatesville High. The Royals were hanging close before Cheltenham pulled away to a team victory with 72 points.
Upper Darby (Jared Carter, Donovan St. Louis, Brandon Morton, Mason Weh) had a day-closing, somewhat disappointing seventh-place finish in the 4 x 400 relay at 3:23.43. But that earned a second-place finish at 49 points, one more than third-place Downingtown West.

WESTTOWN — No. 8 vs. No. 9 always has the potential to be a nail-biting game, and Thursday’s second round District One girls lacrosse playoff game between eight-seeded Bishop Shanahan and ninth-seeded Springfield held true to form. It was a roller-coaster battle at Al Kelly Field that ended in a 12-10 Springfield victory.
The Cougars (16-4) move on to play the top seed, Conestoga, in the quarterfinals 12:30 p.m. Saturday at a site to be determined. It’s the 18th straight time Springfield has made the district quarterfinals.
“Today is a big win, especially because it is on the road against the seed in front of us,’ Springfield senior Emily Santana said. “This was huge for our confidence and now we are excited to play on Saturday.’
