Tarr relieves early nerves for Marple Newtown

NEWTOWN SQUARE — It had all the makings of a back-and-forth game until Luke Tarr stepped on the mound Tuesday at Thomas Field.

The Marple Newtown senior entered in relief of starter Tommy Lucchesi, who struggled with his command through two-plus innings in frigid conditions. Tarr was in dire straits as visiting Ridley had runners in scoring position with nobody out.

The hard-throwing righthander had trust in his stuff.

“I feel like there’s definitely a different level of focus coming in with runners on second and third, we just let up a couple of runs,” Tarr said. “You know that you’ve got to help your team and get out of it and pitch to the best of your ability.”

Tarr got out of the no-out jam unscathed, then the Marple bats exploded for eight unanswered runs on the way to an 11-4 victory over the Green Raiders.

Tarr has a quick-hitch overarm delivery and extends with his front leg, making it appear that he’s right on top of the hitter. Ridley hitters had trouble timing his quirky pitching style.

“I started really getting into pitching my sophomore year and I guess that’s when I got that short release,” he said. “It does look weird. I’ve seen pictures of it, but it’s hard to tell when you’re in the game.”

Tarr struck out six in five innings of work to earn the win. He allowed only two batters to reach base.

“My changeup wasn’t as good as it usually is, so I did lean more on my fastball,” he said. “When I noticed they couldn’t catch up to it, I wanted to throw it more.”

The Tigers (5-1) have plenty of depth at pitching and Tarr proved Tuesday he can handle a tough assignment out of the bullpen. While the Tigers have all four of their starting pitchers back from last year, Tarr showed he can miss bats and eat innings, which makes him a quality reliever to have for a team that expects to be playing in June.

“He’s a good situational pitcher who can start on any team in the Central League,” Marple coach Rick Zimmerman said. “He threw one pitch for me earlier in the year and he came in and did great today.

“Our guys are a little bit behind. We don’t have a field (due to on-campus construction and renovations). We’ve practiced inside maybe seven out of 10 times during the week, so it’s been frustrating and we’re behind a little bit. We’re a good ballclub and we’re a deep ballclub, but everyone has to understand their role, that they might go two weeks before they get a spin, but when they do they’ve got to be ready.”

Tarr was ready. The Marple bats were ready, too. The lineup pounded out 12 hits, including solo home runs by senior designated hitter Jimmy Wigo and senior first baseman Owen Mathes, who are two of the aces of the pitching staff. Mathes hit a solo bomb to dead center field moments after Dillon Can laced an RBI single to put the Tigers in front to stay in the fourth inning (Can was erased on a caught stealing). The left-handed Wigo hit a towering shot over the fence in right to lead off the sixth.

“I feel like we’re getting better every game and making less mistakes,” said Mathes, who also singled, walked and scored two runs.

Bats back achy D’Ambrosio as Springfield tops Strath Haven

NETHER PROVIDENCE — There’s no telling whether Springfield has the team to win a Central League championship or make a deep run in the District 1 playoffs. It’s only April, and the Cougars, like most teams in Delaware County, haven’t played many games.

But they certainly have the talent to outhit a lot of teams.

Up and down the order, the Cougars have one of the top lineups in the conference. And if they play clean defense as they did in Monday’s 8-0 victory at Strath Haven, they will be doing big favors for an ailing pitching staff.

Senior ace and left-hander Luke D’Ambrosio felt pain in his cranky elbow four innings into his start Monday and was pulled after allowing only one hit, an infield single. He walked three and struck out one.

The soreness is nothing new to D’Ambrosio. He has battled the injury since last year. His options coming into the 2022 season were to undergo Tommy John surgery, thus wiping out his senior year, or ride it out. He opted to rehab the elbow and take it slow.

D’Ambrosio, who wants to be electrician after he graduates in June, decided he had nothing to lose. There’s no college coach keeping tabs on his progress (though he hopes to continue his post-high school career in the Delco League, like his dad Chris back in the day). He’s making every effort to pitch through the pain and leave it all out there for his teammates.

“He’s not out here for himself, he’s out here for everyone else,” said All-Delco center fielder Zach Tropiano, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. “He’s playing for us, and we’ve got to back him up.”

After an efficient outing Monday, it may be a couple of weeks before D’Ambrosio sets foot on the mound. The good thing is the Cougars (4-2) don’t play again until after from spring break next Tuesday.

“It was that last curveball I threw, it just didn’t feel right,” he said. “It hurt a little bit when I was extending it out, but it feels better now after I iced it.”

Coach Brian Francis feels confident he has the arms. Prior to the season, senior hurler Danny Ryan underwent the same operation that D’Ambrosio has purposely avoided.

“We’re keeping (D’Ambrosio) to 50-60 pitches each time he goes out and we’ve been trying to get him as far as he can. He felt a little funny in the elbow and needed to come out today,” Francis said. “Luckily, we have shown that we have some pitching, we have guys that can throw. (Sean) Williams did great today. It was a great team win, but I just feel bad for (D’Ambrosio) because he wants to be out there. And he’s good enough to stay out there, but he’s just not strong enough right now. He’ll get it looked at and hopefully he’ll pitch again for us before the end of the year.”

Williams threw the final three innings and was excellent. He scattered three hits and fanned a pair. Aiding both D’Ambrosio and Williams was an infield defense that turned three double plays.

“We can catch the ball, and we do every part of the game well,” Francis said. “When they all come together, you see a good game like you saw today.”

Reilly, Jameison star as Conestoga cruises past Strath Haven

TREDYFFRIN >> It is quite unusual, seeing a boys’ lacrosse powerhouse like Conestoga with a sub .500 record. But sometimes the raw numbers can be deceiving, and that certainly appears to be the case with the Pioneers.

With just one win in its first three outings against ridiculously tough competition, ’Stoga responded forcefully in what amounted to a must-win home clash against league foe Strath Haven Tuesday. The Pioneers scored the first 10 goals and went on to top the Panthers 11-5 at Teamer Field.

“Every league game is important, and I thought our guys came out, got a lead and stuck with it until we pulled our starters,” said Conestoga head coach Brody Bush.

Now 2-1 in the Central League (2-3 overall), ’Stoga remains just a game off the pace in the league standings following an earlier setback to Radnor, the defending state champs. Strath Haven falls to 1-2, 1-4.

“We came out a little slow,” said Panthers’ first-year head coach Josh Davey. “We have a lot of young guys and we are still trying to find the right pieces.

“We finally scored a couple at the end, but I am a little disappointed in the overall effort.”

The Pioneers were without four injured starters, including top midfielder Peter Detwiler, who suffered a broken foot in the season opener and will likely miss the rest of the regular season. The rest of the list includes defenders Will Preston and Toby Murphy (concussion), and senior attacker Chase Kelly (hamstring).

But two remaining stars – attacker Patrick Reilly and goaltender Patrick Jameison – are healthy, and both made their mark on Tuesday.

Signed to play Division I college lacrosse at Bucknell, Reilly was a dominant force, registering a hat trick before the end of the first period and finishing with five goals (and an assist) on the day. The senior scored just about every way possible: on several great individual moves, on the fast break, off a cut to the goal mouth and off a steal to a wide open cage.

“His first step is so explosive – it might be the fastest of any attacker I’ve ever coached,” said Bush, who is in his eighth season at the helm.

A junior, Jameison turned aside all nine shots he faced through the first three quarters. He has already verbally committed to playing college ball at Duke.

“We have the best goalie in the state, and it gives you another layer of comfort,” Bush added.

Ultra aggressive at the start, Reilly’s three goals and another by senior midfielder Michael Austin made it 4-0 after one. And in the second, junior Drew Merschel scored two more, and then Reilly made it 7-0 at the break with a steal deep in Strath Haven’s defensive zone and a tally.

“This is the first home win of our season,” Reilly pointed out. “We just needed this for momentum going forward.

“We have a bunch of key players out, so we can’t take any game for granted.”

With addition goals by Reilly and Austin, and another from senior Mitch Baker, the margin increased to 10-0 through three quarters, and that’s when Bush started to substitute, particularly on defense.

“Our goal for this game was no goals for the first quarter, and to score at least three goals per quarter, which we were able to do until the fourth,” Reilly said.

The Panthers got a single goal from junior Tate Gorman, and two apiece from juniors Jamison Soeiro and Austin Connor, in the final 12 minutes of action.
