Boys Basketball: Strath Haven turning to Harrar for size, experience

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> Strath Haven’s 19-win season in 2015-16 ranked as one of the surprises in District 1. But as John Harrar surveyed the gym this week, he couldn’t help but notice that much of the depth that furnished that special season has moved on. Where scoring balance was the Panthers’ hallmark last year, Harrar finds himself as the focal point this year, the 6-foot-8 senior accompanied by just one returnee who played more than 12 games last year.

“We’re just trying to get people varsity experience, because we have some people who didn’t even get in last year (that are) starting” this year, Harrar said. “Once we pick that up, we’ll be fine.”

Harrar anticipated changes, with the matriculation of three starting seniors. Point guard Jahmeir Springfield’s transfer to Chester was an unexpected wrinkle. Though young talent waits in the wings, acclimating them to the rigors of varsity ball requires time. Harrar understands his task on and off the court. Last year, he served as a support scorer, one of several options in the post as the Panthers efficiently operated inside-out. With less proven shooters than Alex Ischiropoulos and Jayvon Green-Springfield, the spotlight is on Harrar to provide a larger share of the offense.

“I’m definitely doing more in the one-on-one game than I did last year, whether it’s in the post or on the elbow,” Harrar said. “I’m trying to take over the offense even with the loss of Jahmeir. … I need to score a lot more than I did last year.”

The other aspect Harrar will emphasize is leadership. He’s one of three seniors, along with Peter Foggo and Patrick O’Kane, both of whom played sparingly a season ago. (Junior Cooper Driscoll is the other Panther to see significant time, though Harrar and the 6-foot-5 forward may seldom be on the floor simultaneously.) Where Harrar, who is pursuing Division I interest as a defensive end in football, once deferred to elders, he’s now emerged as a vocal leader.

“He just tells us to stay confident and work hard throughout it,” O’Kane said. “If you’re hustling, you can’t do anything really wrong.”

“I tell them to have confidence,” Harrar said. “When I was younger, I never had confidence. I built that over the years, and I know that comes with time, but I tell them to ball out and have confidence and you’ll play your best game.”

The cupboard isn’t bare of talent. Junior guard Ryan Morris played well down the stretch last year and poses a viable perimeter threat. Chris Rosini could fill the point guard’s shoes, while All-Delco lacrosse player Jeff Conner has the athleticism to contribute. While the Panthers’ situation isn’t ideal, a dose of perspective is pertinent. Last year’s success, albeit ending in a first-round upset for the No. 8 seed in the District 1 Class 4A playoffs, followed five total wins in the previous two seasons. For vets who endured those struggles, relaying to youngsters how greatly the program has progressed figures significantly in the communication.

All Delco Girls Soccer Teams

The following players from the Central League were named to the All Central Teams.

FIRST TEAM

Carly Dunford, Penncrest: Just a sophomore, Dunford spearheaded a defense composed of two sophomores and two freshmen. Despite the youth and a rotating cast of goalkeepers, the defensive talent was obvious: Penncrest allowed 14 goals all season on the way to the District 1 Class 3A final and the first round of the PIAA tournament, posting 13 clean sheets. In the first 18 games of the season, the Dunford-led defense allowed seven markers. Dunford, a two-year varsity starter, recovered from an ACL tear that curtailed her freshman campaign. She scored her lone goal in a 2-0 win over Kennett Sept. 16.

Brianna Blair, Haverford: The senior defender was the standout on the Fords’ backline, using her physical game to hold down the right back position. With Blair, the Fords posted 14 shutouts, surrendered eight goals in 20 games and advanced to the second round of the District 1 Class 4A tournament. Blair also chipped in offensively, scoring six goals, all in league play, five in Haverford wins. Blair’s long throw-ins also proved difficult to defend, setting up numerous scoring chances, four of which resulted in assists. Blair will continue her career at Cabrini.

Amelia Durfee, Haverford: The senior was the Fords’ midfield general, orchestrating play from her deep-lying position and doing the box-to-box work that informed the Fords’ success on both ends of the field. Durfee was the team’s leading scorer with nine goals, including two each against Harriton and Interboro. She added six assists. Durfee also contributed to the Fords’ sterling defensive record, helping Haverford win 15 games and get by West Chester Rustin in overtime in the first round of the District 1 Class 4A tournament.

Gia Dragoni, Garnet Valley: The sophomore midfielder/forward stepped up to fill the void left by injuries to, among others, her older sister and two-time All-Delco Britney. Dragoni led the Jaguars back to the District 1 playoffs, scoring a team-high nine goals to go with four assists. The first-team All-Central pick scored the Jags’ only goal in the District 1 Class 4A ouster at the hands of West Chester Henderson, 2-1. Dragoni scored in a 2-1 win over Episcopal Academy and registered both tallies, including the overtime game-winner, in a Sept. 29 victory over Lower Merion.

Gia Martyn, Penncrest: The senior midfield engine powered the Lions to the District 1 Class 3A final and state tournament. Martyn scored five goals and 14 assists and seemed at her best in the biggest moments. She provided a goal and an assist in the regular-season tilt with Conestoga. She supplied assists in six straight games to end the regular-season and start the playoffs. Martyn, an All-Central pick, registered a superb free-kick goal plus an assist on Tara Higgins’ overtime game-winner to get Penncrest to states, 2-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy. Martyn will continue her career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Maura Holst, Radnor: The Raiders struggled to a sub-.500 season, but that didn’t dent the midfielder’s brilliance. The Fordham commit and two-time All-Delco scored 11 goals, the only Raider with more than three. She accounted for 55 percent of the 20 goals Radnor scored. The All-Central pick recorded a hat trick against Upper Darby Oct. 7. She tallied both goals in a 2-1 win over Ridley, and earned Radnor a point with a penalty kick in a 1-1 draw with Springfield. Goals by Holst netted Radnor a 1-0 win over Marple Newtown and a 1-1 draw with Garnet Valley to squeeze them into the District 1 3A tournament

SECOND TEAM
Ashley Bufano, Sr. GK, Garnet Valley
Molly Santoro, Sr. D, Haverford
Alex Zecca, Sr. D, Garnet Valley
Claire van Duyne, Sr. M, Strath Haven

All-Delco Girls Soccer: King’s game traveled far beyond scoring goals

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> Lizzie King’s wistful tone quickly evaporates, the focused cadence she uses to discuss soccer replacing it.

King recalls a trip last spring to Spain as a member of the Region 1 Olympic Development Program, venturing to Madrid, Barcelona and a quick stopover in France. The team-bonding, the touristy stops, celebrating Easter in a foreign country, those highlights elicit warm memories.

But when the subject turns to the soccer, King turns serious. Playing professionals, some a decade her senior, was an eye-opening experience. The immersion in a new soccer style, with Spain’s characteristic emphasis on passing and technical skill as opposed to America’s speed and strength, was the most revelatory for the Strath Haven forward.

“I don’t know if I reflected that when I played this year,” King said last week, “but it definitely gave me a different perspective and a different way to learn the game.”

Intentional or not, King’s maturation this fall demonstrated how deeply she took those lessons to heart. After two years building a reputation as one of the area’s most fearsome strikers, King took stock of the squad around her and divined that for the Panthers to achieve their goals, her efforts would be best allocated in more diverse ways. Instead of creating goals exclusively for herself, King became the provider this season, generating chances for others in what became a robust Strath Haven attack.

King’s reward, to complement a second straight Central League title, is a second consecutive Daily Times Girls Soccer Player of the Year Award.

Joining King on the first team are two players each from Haverford (Brianna Blair and Amelia Durfee), Episcopal Academy (Morgan Messner and Lilly Shaner) and Penncrest (Gia Martyn and Carly Dunford). Rounding out the squad is Archbishop Carroll’s Bella Sorrentino, Garnet Valley’s Gia Dragoni, Radnor’s Maura Holst, Delco Christian’s Alex Thompson and Christian Academy’s Lindsay Haseltine.

Holst and King are the only repeat selections, Holst for a second time and King a third. (There’s a notable caveat borne of injuries: Garnet Valley’s Britney Dragoni, a two-time pick, missed the season with a knee injury, while EA’s Molly O’Brien was limited to nine games, sufficient for the 2015 All-Delco to earn a second-team nod.)

Nine of the honorees are seniors, with Gia Dragoni and Dunford sophomores and Messner the lone junior. The All-Delco team is selected in consultation with area coaches.
