Volleyball: Strath Haven bounces back to beat Penncrest

First-year coach John Grossman liked what he saw as he watched his Strath Haven volleyball team warm up before Monday’s Central League semifinal showdown with Penncrest. The Panthers were hitting the ball hard and appeared to be ready. They were not.
“We came out tense,” Grossman said. “We had six or seven service errors in the first set.”
Strath Haven dropped that set, but the nervousness did not last long. Strath Haven bounced back to take the next three sets for a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Lions.
“Once we calmed down and started to serve the ball the way we can, we were fine,” Grossman said. Strath Haven (11-6) recovered from that 25-20 loss in the first set to win, 26-24, 25-10 and 25-17 to advance to the league championship game for the seventh year in a row. The defending league champion Panthers will meet regular-season champ Garnet Valley in the championship Wednesday night at a site to be determined.
It will be the fifth time the Panthers and Jaguars have squared off for the league title. The two teams have combined to win the last six championships.

Golf: Conestoga’s Yao captures East Regional golf title

FLEETWOOD >> With five players were vying for the final three spots to earn a berth at next week’s PIAA Championships, Conestoga’s Samantha Yao was strolling casually on the cartpath as she watched the players come down the No. 18 fairway. My, the difference a year can make. A year after she missed the cut as a result of a one-hole playoff, Yao captured the PIAA-AAA East Region Championship at Golden Oaks Golf Club title Monday with a 1-under 71.

“Last year was really tough,” she said. “I was so close, but just missed going to states. It definitely wasn’t the way I wanted to end my season.”

Yao posted six birdies and five bogeys en route to finishing four strokes better than the rest of the field Monday. She opened her round with a pair of birdies on the first two holes, then closed out the frontside with  birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to put her at 2-under.

Radnor’s Gabby Kim finished tied with Emmaus’ Samantha Fritzinger and Manheim Township’s Ellen Wagner for second place at 3-over 75. Just a few days after capturing the District One title at Turtle Creek, Yao brought with her a similar approach to Golden Oaks. Hardly a risk-taker, Yao trusted her short game throughout, flirting with about 30 putts for her round.

Football: Marple Newtown rebounds with come-from-behind win

HAVERFORD >> Marple Newtown quarterback Anthony Paoletti peeled himself off the turf and limped to the sideline with his hand in the air. Down seven to Haverford High at the half, Paoletti had just escaped the Fords’ pass rush, taken a hit and still managed to find Dash Dulgerian for a 65-yard touchdown. Paoletti’s end of the play hurt. Well, everything hurt. Was it his knee that was ailing him? An ankle? A groin?

“It’s just bummed,” he said with a laugh in reference to his gimpy left leg. There was a speck of blood on his shoulder as well for good measure. Still, the pain didn’t stop Paoletti Friday night. Nothing did. He inspired a 26-13, come-from-behind victory for the Tigers (7-1 overall, 6-1 league) that keeps them alive for a Central League title should Springfield falter.

“This quarterback is amazing,” said two-way lineman Mike Miller. “You can trust him to do anything, no matter what happens. If it’s 60-yard bombs down the field while getting sacked or running for a 20-yarder. He’s ridiculous.”

Paoletti was at his best in a second half that started with the long bomb to Dulgerian. He orchestrated three scoring drives, capped by a touchdown pass to Cameron Mathes with 36 seconds left.

“We knew we were going to come out and give it to them,” said Paoletti. “We knew it was going to be a renaissance in the second half.” Paoletti was speaking of the game, but he could have easily been talking about the Marple program in general. The Tigers dropped a hard-fought contest last week to Ridley. They needed a bounce back effort and got one. Third-year boss Chris Gicking, who celebrated his birthday Friday, has the signature moment of his young tenure.

“This group is just amazing,” said Gicking. “We challenged them all week. We were all disappointed, and they responded. I can’t say enough about the coaches preparing them and the kids executing.”

It looked like the Fords might control the affair, eating up nearly five minutes off the clock on their opening possession. Jake Ruane hit Jordan Mosley three times for 20 yards. Mike Romanofsky pounded the Marple D-line for 11. On fourth-and-seven from the nine, Ruane hooked up with Matt Corbett to put the Fords ahead 7-0. But an uneven performance followed. On the Tigers’ first drive, Mosley tipped a pass that Romanofsky corralled. He fumbled two plays later. It was one of five Haverford turnovers on the night.

“Turnovers, in big games with two good teams, turnovers were huge,” said Fords coach Joe Gallagher. “And that wasn’t in our favor. Marple made plays when they had to, and we didn’t.”

It was a bend-don’t-break first 24 minutes for the Tigers. Romanofsky added a rushing touchdown, but Haverford failed to capitalize on its time of possession. The totals made for an ominous trip to the lockeroom: 192 yards, 11 first downs and just 13 points.

Football: Ricci seems right at home as Garnet Valley earns his 200th win

CONCORD >> Homecoming is a special event at any school, but the stakes get a little higher when there is a major milestone on the line.

While Garnet Valley coach Mike Ricci would most likely prefer not to lead off this recap of the Jaguars’ 35-13 Central League victory over visiting Strath Haven, there was no way for him to avoid acknowledging his 200th victory at Garnet Valley when asked about his tenure and how he has overseen the growth of the program from a small-scale operation to a local powerhouse.

“I truly love being here at Garnet Valley and have been truly blessed to have kids who buy into our program and are completely selfless,” said Ricci, who has coached at Garnet Valley since 1986, with the exception of one year when he coached at Widener University. “They work hard and I have a phenomenal group of assistant coaches, who guide them along the way. I’ve always said that this is a win for the football program at Garnet Valley and all that it stands for. It’s also for all of those kids who have come through the program.”

With the win, Ricci became only the fifth coach in Delaware County history to reach the 200-victory plateau, joining Kevin Clancy (Archbishop Carroll/Strath Haven), Phil Marion (Ridley), Joe McNicholas (Ridley) and Steve Lennox (Interboro). One of the major reasons for the Jaguars’ success has been their ability to optimize their talent. With a deep and talented roster, Garnet Valley has the capability to be both explosive and grinding. Strath Haven got a dose of all that Friday night. A big piece of setting the tone for the night was Jacob Buttermore, who continued his assault on opposing defenses as he was, again, a terror to defend. Buttermore, who rushed for 115 yards on 17 carries and had one rushing touchdown, took a reverse on a punt return and dashed 67 yards for the game’s opening score.

“Jacob has been making big plays for us all year and today was no exception,” Ricci said. “It was set up by a great play by Denny Nealon to get him the ball. We work very hard on special teams and I was very proud to see that pay off.”

Buttermore, however, did make one mistake and even that turned into a touchdown. After rushing to the goal line Buttermore had the ball stripped, but Jaguars offensive lineman Joey DiAntonio pounced on the ball for a score.

Cross Country: Strath Haven girls claim share of Central League crown

The only thing that stood between Conestoga and the outright Central League championship in cross country was Strath Haven. If the Panthers, who fell to the Pioneers during the dual-meet season, could beat Conestoga in the league championship race at Rose Tree Park Saturday, Strath Haven would grab a share of the league title.

The Panthers did not go home empty handed.

Isabel Cardi, Taylor Barkdoll, Abby Loiselle and Maddie Forges all finished in the top 10 to help the Panthers top the Pioneers by 28 points in the team competition to grab a share of the league title. Cardi was third overall in 19 minutes, 27.90 seconds. Barkdoll placed fifth, followed by Loiselle in sixth place and Forbes in seventh. Maurissa Ogunde finished in 13th place to round out Strath Haven’s top five. Dominique Shultz of Conestoga was the individual winner. She beat Harriton’s Tasha Greene by 10 seconds for the title. Jamie Green of Ridley placed fourth, while Julia Hellman of Garnet Valley was ninth.

Conestoga’s Yao takes first at District 1 Girls Golf Championship

LIMERICK >> Samantha Yao could be called the model of consistency. The Conestoga sophomore posted 16 pars on her way to capturing the two-day District One girls golf title on Tuesday afternoon at Turtle Creek Golf Course.

“I guess staying consistent was the key,” said Yao with a laugh afterward, “I never really tried to do too much. I stayed out of trouble for the most part and stuck to my game.” Yao shot an 8-over 151 for the two-day tournament. She shot an even-par 72 on the second round, a day after posting an 8-over 79 at Gilbertsville Golf Course.

“After yesterday, I didn’t really know what to expect today,” she said of the second round. “There were a lot of things I knew I needed to work on, needed to fix for this round. Luckily I was able to put it together.” Yao stuck one close on No. 7, then sunk a putt to move to 1-under for the round (7-under overall). Four holes later, she three-putted to finish with her lone bogey for the round on the par 3 No. 11.

“I would love a chance to play that hole again,” she said, “but it’s still really cool to know that I won this.”

Behind Yao, seven other players qualified for next Monday’s Regional Tournament at Golden Oaks Golf Club.

Delco Football Notebook: Multi-purpose players all the rage in Delco

The 2016 season has been the year of the all-purpose player in Delaware County.

The Central League is loaded with these type of all-around performers, most notably Joe Kennedy of Springfield, Jacob Buttermore of Garnet Valley and Ridley’s Brock Anderson, who plays running back, defensive back and punter. Anderson also is a threat in the return game.

Buttermore is a player that can run the ball and line up at wide receiver. Garnet Valley coach Mike Ricci has had these multi-dimensional players every year, it seems, but Buttermore is arguably the best he’s ever had. Buttermore rushed for 217 yards two weeks ago against Haverford. He has six rushing TDs, one TD catch and has returned a punt return and a kick return to paydirt. Buttermore also has been excellent at kicking extra points and field goals.

Anderson is Ridley’s leading rusher and has a punt return for touchdown. Kennedy has a kick return for a touchdown in addition to five touchdown receptions.

“I think what you’re seeing is that teams are emphasizing these athletes and are making a big effort to recruit them within their school,” one Delco coach said. “Buttermore and Anderson certainly fit this description, kids who excel at multiple sports and can do a lot of different things on a football field. Buttermore is the best I’ve seen this year. These players are very difficult to game-plan against, and I think it’s a trend that will continue.”

Tennis: Main Line tennis players net victories at PIAA District One singles tourney

Philadelphia – Main Line tennis players earned a number of victories at the PIAA District One Class AAA singles tournament Oct. 7-8 at Legacy Tennis Center.

In the evening’s final match Oct. 8, Conestoga’s Ashley Griffith defeated Harriton’s Nina Hoog 6-4, 6-3 to earn a spot in the fifth–place match against Central Bucks East’s Sydney Lund, which will take place Oct. 26. District One has four guaranteed spots in the PIAA state tournament, but the district tourney participants play for an alternate spot in States, in case one of the four who qualified is unable to play.

Griffith and Hoog advanced by winning their respective matches Oct. 7. Hoog opened play with a straight set win over Council Rock North’s Joanna Kwong, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cheltenham’s Shannon Nixon, setting up a quarterfinal match against Downingtown West’s Jordan Bradley.

Griffith carved her path with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Academy Park’s Vicky Outland in her opening round match followed by a thrilling three-set victory over Owen J. Roberts’ Elaina Lee setting up her quarterfinal match against second seeded Peyton Bradley from Downingtown West.

In their respective quarterfinal matches, Griffith fell to the older Bradley in straight sets, while Hoog and the younger Bradley battled in what could be considered the highlight match of the tournament, with Jordan eventually prevailing 7-6 (5) in the third set in a match that lasted over three hours.

In the first set, Jordan Bradley held a one-game lead for much of the set before Hoog fought her way to a 6-4 win. The second set saw Bradley jump out to a 5-2 lead before Hoog clawed her way back to 5-4, only for the set to finish 6-4 in Bradley’s favor.

Volleyball: Lost second set motivates Garnet Valley

CONCORD >> There was no sign of panic, no indication of distress, after Garnet Valley dropped the second set Monday night in its match with Strath Haven. Until that two-point loss, the Jaguars had been perfect in Central League play, 28 set wins, 0 losses. So Garnet Valley coach Mark Clark wanted to see how his team would respond to its first set loss in league play.

Clark was quite happy with the result.

The Jaguars bounced back to post a 3-1 victory over the Panthers, with scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-23. That enabled the Jags to clinch the league’s regular season title and move within one victory of earning a spot in next week’s Central League championship game.

If Garnet Valley beats Radnor Thursday, the Jaguars (14-2 overall, 10-0 Central League) are in the final. If Radnor wins, four teams make the league playoffs, which means the Jags will have to play next Monday night instead of having a bye.

And the Jags want the bye.

“It would be a relief to have the bye,” senior Sydney Portale said.

Strath Haven (9-6, 8-2) did not have a chance at the bye, but the Panthers could have moved into a tie for first place with a victory. So they were motivated, too. Early on, the third set looked like it would be a see-saw battle like the first two sets.

There were three ties and one lead change in the first eight points. The momentum did not swing Garnet Valley’s way until Cassidy Gallagher pounded home a pass from Gabby Davis to put the Jaguars up for the first time, 5-4.
Garnet Valley never relinquished that lead.
