Golf: Conestoga’s Yao tied for lead at PIAA golf championships

All summer long, any high school golfer’s goal for the upcoming season is generally the same. Make it to states. On Monday, the PIAA Championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York finally arrived, and with it came some testing conditions.

On the girls side, Conestoga’s Samantha Yao posted an even-par 72 to finish tied for the lead with Peters Township’s Mia Kness. Yao seemingly had an answer for all of her mistakes, quickly backing up each bogey with a birdie. She finished with three bogeys and three birdies, mixing in 12 pars. Radnor’s Gabby Kim shot a 5-over 77, finishing with an eagle on the Par 5 No. 18. She racked up 11 pars and five bogeys with a double on No. 12 en route to finishing tied for seventh.

Her sister, June Kim, sits tied for 12th after posting a 13-over 85.

On the boys side, it was a tough day for local players.

Football: Wood’s pick helps Garnet Valley snip Springfield’s string of successes

SPRINGFIELD >> Dave Wood described the play as just like any other. The linebacker dropped back into coverage, settled into a zone, then reacted to the ball, intercepting Springfield quarterback Johnny Fanelli to seal a 21-14 Garnet Valley win Friday evening. But even the senior, in his role as Wood Jr., offered a little smirk about what that interception would mean when he got home. Wood’s pick evicted Springfield from the ranks of the unbeaten, opening the door for the Ridley team coached by that other, older Dave Wood to win out and split a title.

“It’s going to be a great night,” the younger Wood said. “He’s going to be happy, and I’m going to be happy.”
That message carried clear across the Central League, through some version of familial intuition (and, perhaps, Twitter).

“(Springfield) lost and my son had the key interception,” Wood Sr. told a reporter after Ridley’s 36-0 win over Conestoga. “That’s awesome. It’s an awesome play and it’s just awesome he did that. Our kids were cheering on the sideline.”

Plenty of the younger Wood’s fellow Jaguars (7-2, 6-2 Central League) were ecstatic, too. It’s likely a longshot for the Jags to nudge back into the title race, but they solidified their placement in the District 1 6A field, entering the night seeded 11th.

They also spiced up the recipe for Week 10, which Ridley, Springfield and Marple Newtown will all enter with one league loss and designs on a portion of the Central crown. The Cougars play Haverford (5-2 in the Central League with Upper Darby waiting on Thanksgiving) in the arch-spoiler role.

Football: Dominant defense earns payback win for Ridley

TREDYFFRIN >> Coming into Friday night’s game at Conestoga, Ridley boasted a defense that allowed fewer than 10 points per game. A 36-0 win over Conestoga will only improve that number. The Ridley defense once again stepped up to allow Conestoga to gain only 22 total yards and five first downs the entire night. Linebackers Sean Crowley and Ryan Gricco forced a safety in the third quarter.

“Defensively it’s what we’ve gotten all year from Gricco, to Crowley to Spilman, to the effort in the secondary, it’s unbelievable what we’ve done on that side,” Ridley head coach Dave Wood said. “It makes it easier for the offense. We are a gambling defense and we are going to pressure and give it over to our offense.”

On the other side of the ball, the Raiders’ offense took some time to warm up. It wasn’t until early in the second quarter that Ridley scored its first points, on a 20-yard field goal by Kyran Baker. He fought off some wind and rain to make another field goal from 24 yards, and all four of his extra-point attempts.

“I think tonight our kicker did a tremendous job,” Wood said. “We were a little bit slow to start and he nails the first field goal. With the wind and rain he made all the extra points. I give all the credit to Baker. He did an unbelievable job.”

Ridley quarterback Cade Stratton delivered the Raiders their first touchdown on a 64-yard pass to receiver Malik Young, who streaked down the middle untouched. Stratton threw for 130 yards on 6-of-9 passing for 130 yards.

“Last year they blew us out and came into our home field,” Stratton said. “Embarrassed us. We never wanted to feel like that again and we came out knowing it’s going to be the last time playing on this field. We wanted to make a statement before we went into playoffs.”

Football: Mahalik rewards Penncrest line with monster game

LOWER MERION >> On days like Saturday, the Penncrest offensive linemen can’t help but crack a grin when talking about Caleb Mahalik. The big guys up front do the dirty work, and Mahalik’s blend of that dose of team effort with his imperviousness to tacklers can yield special performances like Saturday’s 54-15 win over Lower Merion. Mahalik was the headliner with a gaudy stat line: 27 carries, 251 yards, five touchdowns.

“I love blocking for him,” lineman Mike Wilson said. “He always gets good yardage. Whenever he’s in, you just know he’s going to make a big play. Seeing him run down the field, there’s nothing better than that.”

But with all due respect to the junior, the prolific Penncrest running attack that tallied 469 yards on 46 carries owed to more than any one person. That’s how reserves like Kasta Pahides (four carries, 35 yards) and sophomore Vincent Brown (seven for 82) enter late in games, tally touchdowns and continue the roughshod running. All those yards churned out a blitz of 48 consecutive points after a scoreless first quarter and Lower Merion (2-7, 0-6 Central) opening the scoring on the first snap of the second. From the 6 minute, 37 second mark of the second quarter, on Mahalik’s first score from one yard out, to Pahides’ one-yard dive on the first snap of the fourth quarter, the Lions (3-6, 2-6) pushed the ball across the goal line seven times in 19 minutes.

“I think upfront, when we get our blocks right consistently, having him get through the hole, he just goes from there,” Wilson said of Mahalik.

The early plan was simple enough, targeting Lower Merion’s undersized line with the hulking duo of James George and Bryan Dewar, with Michael Goolsby on the other side. It was a case of dialing up the same plays until Lower Merion proved it could stop it. The Aces never did.

“The left side of our line, James and Dewar, just kept blowing them back every time,” Mahalik said. “So the iso up the middle was getting me at least five yards every time.” “We ran the same three plays every time, and the plays kept working,” George said, “so we kept running them.”

Football: Garnet Valley’s O-linemen up front about taking on No. 1 Springfield

CONCORD >> At Garnet Valley, there’s prestige that comes with being an offensive lineman. Over the last decade, no team has produced more All-Delco linemen than the Jaguars. Coach Mike Ricci would be the first to admit that he’s fortunate to be surrounded by excellent coaches who know how to develop young men for the position. It’s also the team-first mantra that Ricci continuously preaches, especially appropriate for the boys up front, that leads to success. Without camaraderie, communication and trust, the line cannot accomplish its goals.

“In order to be a good offensive line, there can be no ego,” explained Ricci, who won his 200th game at Garnet Valley last Friday. “It has to be all about ‘we’ and never about ‘me’.” Alex Yao and Chad Hrvinak are two players who have bought into the system and are thriving for the Jags. Both two-year starters, Yao and Hrvinak have stood out in large part due to their prior varsity experience. Yao, a right guard, and Hrvinak, a right tackle, have shown the way for the other guys on the offensive line.

“I can say, I never go into the games with nerves. Last year I always had butterflies in my stomach, but it’s different this year,” Yao said. “We both have been through this together and we have the confidence to do our job. “Mainly, during practice we stick together as a unit and do everything together. And when we’re not playing, we’re working together on the sideline. A lot of us have been playing together for a long time, so we have that bond. We communicate really well, too.”

Not surprisingly, Hrvinak and Yao have more than lived up to expectations. With a 6-2 record entering Friday night’s battle with first-place Springfield (8-0),  the Jaguars offensive line has spearheaded a rushing attack that is averaging 275 yards per contest.

“I’ve been thrilled with our entire offensive line. Alex and Chad were two of our starters last year and they kind of set the tone for the other guys, for what it takes to be a good high school football offensive lineman,’ Ricci said. “Tom Mahoney, Jake Erley, Joey DiAntonio and Ryan Shomo work in there. (Along with) our tight end, John Ricci, they’ve done a really good job up front. Paul Graham, our offensive line coach, does a really good job getting them prepared. They work really hard and they take a lot of pride in doing the little things right.

Hrivnak also has excelled on the defensive line with a team-high 6.5 tackles. Hrvinak and linemate Rob Monachello (44 tackles, five sacks) have been forces all season for the Jags.

“I’ve been focused on reading my keys, doing my job, and hopefully it works out,” Hrvinak said. “I’ve been working really hard.” That’s exactly the sort of attitude the Jags need Friday in order to conquer Springfield. With a win the host Cougars can clinch at least a share of the Central League title for the second time in three years.

Volleyball: Davis helps Garnet Valley earn Central League title

LOWER MERION >> Mark Clark continually stresses to his team about winning “one point at a time.” While a simple focal point, the seventh-year Garnet Valley head coach emphasizes to his Jaguars volleyball team, it speaks volumes to the way he directs his program and that mantra was never more prevalent than against a familiar foe Tuesday night in the Central League final.

Garnet Valley broke out to early leads in the first and second sets before closing things out in the fourth on their way to a 3-1 victory over Strath Haven in the Central League title game at Harriton High School. It is Garnet Valley’s third league crown in five years. The Jaguars upended the defending champion Panthers 25-12, 25-20, 13-25 and 25-13.

Jumping out to a 7-0 and 5-0 lead in the first and second set, respectively, the Jaguars were up 2-0 on an opponent they had faced in five of the last six league title games. Garnet Valley never trailed in either set, but its biggest obstacle came in the third set.

After falling behind 15-4, the Panthers rolled to a 12-point set win and Clark knew his team had to go back to what had brought them so much success: taking each point with the same approach.

“They had us down and were crushing us. We didn’t care about the score at that time because we had to build some momentum back up,” Clark said.

Behind a quartet of seniors in Gabby Davis, Julianne Hurley, Sydney Portale and Lizzie Herestofa, the Jaguars (17-2) overcame a sloppy third set and never trailed in a commanding fourth set victory. Davis finished with a team-high 35 assists along with six digs. Hurley tallied six kills and four blocks. Portale recorded 11 kills and an ace while Herestofa had 24 digs and an ace of her own. Davis, a member of Garnet Valley’s 2014 title and 2015 runner-up team, described how her role evolved throughout the season.

Girls Soccer: Strath Haven repeats thanks to Hotham’s surprise

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> Margot Hotham’s first reaction was sheepish surprise Tuesday night.

For 53 minutes, her Strath Haven team had pressured Springfield but couldn’t find a crack in the Cougars’ armor. So when Hotham’s low shot across the face of goal from the left channel beat goalie Shannon Cutcliff and helped the Panthers bust through that wall, it took a moment to set in.

“I was just shocked,” said Hotham of the first of her two goals that helped the Panthers to a 3-0, Central League-title-clinching win. “Obviously I wanted to score, but I had missed a few times, but I finally made it and I was kind of shocked in the moment. Then I saw people running at me, and I was really excited.”

The victory earns the Panthers (12-3-1, 10-0-1) their second straight Central League title and sixth crown in seven years. They had it all to do Tuesday, with a potential loss handing the title to Conestoga after its 3-2 win over Lower Merion Monday and a draw splitting the title. But Hotham kept those hypotheticals under wraps with her brace, both of which owed to the inspiration of Lizzie King.

The reigning Daily Times Player of the Year, long a poacher grabbing goals by the bunch, has added layers to her game this year with her ability to set up others. In the 53rd, as Springfield’s defense collapsed on her at the top of the box, King touched a diagonal feed into the left channel that Hotham ripped into the wide side of the net. King did the providing in the 73rd, her flicked-on pass of a Maddie Ruffini long ball springing Hotham. The first attempt was denied by a sprawling Cutcliff, but Hotham was quickest to the rebound, tucking it away to put the game out of reach.

“Amazing. She just knows where to play it exactly,” Hotham said of King. “I think that she’s assisted almost every goal I’ve had this year. She’s insane.”

King finished the scoring four minutes from time, fielding a long ball from Morgan Crain near the right corner flag, twisting a defender this way and that and rocketing a left-footed shot over Cutcliff to set off the celebrations.

Tennis: Harriton egdes Henderson for PIAA District One girls’ tennis team title

Whitemarsh – West Chester Henderson entered Tuesday’s PIAA District One Class AAA girls’ tennis team championship final at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School looking for its third consecutive district title, while Harriton was looking to spoil the party and claim its first title since moving up to Class AAA in 2012.

With the match deadlocked at 2-2, all the attention was focused on Henderson senior Emma Clark, who clinched a spot in the upcoming PIAA Class AAA individual state singles tournament and Harriton sophomore Sophia Sassoli, who will be participating in the upcoming PIAA District One Class AAA doubles tournament.

With Sassoli holding a one set advantage, Clark did not stop attacking the younger player, using a combination of power and finesse to take a 3-1 advantage in the second set. With the crowd cheering every point and both players feeling the support from teammates and family, Sassoli fought back and eventually broke Clark to take a 5-4 lead with a chance to serve for the match.

Thanks to some timely big serves and key shot placement, Sassoli held serve to win the second set and the match, 6-4, thus breaking the Warriors’ stranglehold at the top of District One and giving Harriton its first district title at the Class AAA level.

“I knew the match was tight and I knew the pressure was on but I tried not to think about because if I started thinking about it I knew the match wouldn’t end well,” said Sassoli. “I just kept telling myself ‘Legs and Swing’ and to keep it simple. It was an amazing feeling when I won the match. It was a great sense of relief to win.”

Harriton coach David Broida said, “Sophia Sassoli didn’t disappoint when the pressure was on and the team needed her to win the final match and break a 2-2 tie.  After winning the first set 6-2, and down 3-4 in the second, Sophia fought back to win the last three games, finishing off her opponent on her second match point.  Sophia showed determination, perseverance, and raw physical strength in powering each hit back to her opponent until the ball was not returned.”

Boys Soccer: Conestoga tops Lower Merion to cap perfect season in dramatic fashion

TREDYFFRIN >> Winning the Central League regular season crown and earning a possible No. 1 seed for the upcoming District 1 Playoffs simply wasn’t enough for the Conestoga boys’ soccer squad.

The unbeaten Pioneers wanted to make an even bigger statement on Senior Night at electric Teamer Field, and senior midfielder Blaise Milanek delivered, scoring the game winner less than three minutes into the overtime session to cap off a 2-1 victory over visiting Lower Merion on Tuesday evening.

“It’s my senior year and I’m lucky to go out on a bang like this,” Milanek said. “I couldn’t be prouder of this team. It was quite a way to end it.”

Conestoga (11-0) had already wrapped up the Central League crown. Now 18-0 overall, the Pioneers became the first boys soccer team in school history to complete the regular season without a blemish.

“You want to try to accomplish as many things as possible in a season,” said Conestoga head coach David Zimmerman. “We already had the Central League title in our back pocket, but having this claim to fame is something that can’t be bettered.”

Seeded seventh in the latest District 1 power rankings, Lower Merion completes the regular season at 8-2-1 (12-2-2 overall), and like Conestoga, has high hopes for the postseason.

“There is a reason these two teams have the records that they have,” said Aces head coach Nico Severini. “There was a lot of good soccer out there, a lot of good passing and good creativity.”

“Our boys stepped up to the challenge, but fell a little short at the end.”

At the 7:36 mark of the OT, Milanek got his head on a throw-in by teammate Will Klein and deposited it into the back of the net. The game-winner sparked a raucous celebration, with the large and boisterous student section storming the field.
