Football: Hamby’s air efficiency helps Garnet Valley roll

CONCORD >> The conditions Friday night at Garnet Valley weren’t exactly conducive to passing, which already isn’t quite Plan A for the Jaguars.

So when Matt Hamby dropped back to pass in the face of stinging rain and stiff wind, he made sure to make it count. Hamby only attempted two passes, both on fourth down, both for long touchdowns to Jacob Buttermore, powering the Jaguars’ 34-18 Central League win over Springfield.

Football: Bingnear’s interception seals a must-win for Ridley

RIDLEY TWP. >> The best way for Radnor to keep quarterback Pat McDermott against Ridley’s stout defensive line was to get him on the move early and often. Only a handful of McDermott’s 24 pass attempts featured him standing stationary in the pocket, so when Radnor faced fourth-and-11 down a touchdown to Ridley with less than three minutes to go, Sean Bingnear knew what to expect. Bingnear knew McDermott would be on the move and he knew there’d be a good chance the throw would be headed to Justin DiCarlo. From there, the Green Raiders’ senior free safety went to work.

“(DiCarlo) came out and did the flood (concept) like they’d been doing all game,” Bingnear said. “We were in Cover 2 and I just stepped in front of the pass.”

Bingnear hauled in the pass, essentially cementing a 28-21 Ridley win at Phil Marion Field that ended the Green Raiders’ two-game losing skid. It took some doing, though, to put away a pesky Radnor squad missing several key players. Do-it-all athlete Jack Wilson and All-Delco linebacker Dario Falcone were the latest additions to the injury list. It didn’t hurt Ridley’s chances, though, that Malik Young went off on the ground.

Volleyball: Fisher guides Strath Haven to statement win

MIDDLETOWN >> As her team’s third-game advantage vanished Thursday night in crunch time, Strath Haven junior Brianna Fisher did all she could to keep Penncrest from taking its first game win and a much-needed dose of momentum. Before the visiting Panthers wrapped up a 3-1 victory by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-20 at Penncrest’s Kaufman Gymnasium, the Lions rallied to knot the third frame at 21 apiece in an effort to avoid being swept in a long-awaited battle of undefeated Central League volleyball powers.

Fisher promptly responded by swatting the ball against Penncrest’s side of the hardwood on consecutive plays. After the Lions tied it again to make it a 23-all game, she did it again. But when she rotated out to the serving spot with her team ahead by a single point, her ensuing delivery met the net and tied the game right back up again. Penncrest eventually rallied to win the game, prompting a message from Panthers head coach Kevin Haney and company during the two-minute break prior to the fourth game.

“They just said to stay calm,” said Fisher, who paced the Panthers with 12 kills and nine digs. “Just shake it off and stay tough.

Girls Soccer: Decarlo, Glassford help Strath Haven down Conestoga

She put the ball down on the turf at Teamer Field and looked inside the 18-yard line. In flew Carly Glassford. In went the ball to the back of the net. The DeCarlo-Glassford connection struck twice Tuesday night, and the Panthers defeated the Pioneers, 3-1.

“That’s a big deal,” Glassford said. “Beating them is always a big deal.”

Girls Soccer:Penncrest’s Mancarella knows her craft – scoring – well

Olivia Mancarella has been collecting advice.

It started when she was about 6 years old, the first time she started playing forward for her soccer team. In the decade since then, as she spent time at Springton Lake Middle School, years with West Chester United and competing with Penn Fusion, the Penncrest junior amassed a lot of knowledge. Exclusively playing up top her whole career, Mancarella takes little bits of advice from every coach she comes into contact with.

Tips such as making sure to stay with the last defender; learning to play the ball back instead of forcing it forward when triple-teamed; and knowing when you should or shouldn’t shoot.
