Football: Korboi leads Upper Darby defense in Royal beating

UPPER DARBY >> After a 33-7 home romp against Radnor to stretch its undefeated Central League record to 4-0, it’s fair to wonder how far this Upper Darby team can go.

A balanced offense showcased how good the Royals are: Isaiah Bruce rushed for three touchdowns, while Christoff Minott threw for 257 yards and a score. The defense, on the other hand, hinted at how good it can be.

Upper Darby forced five Raiders turnovers, none more significant than the first. With the score tied 7-7 midway through the first quarter and Radnor driving to take a lead, defensive lineman Derick Korboi delivered a hit that altered the game. He broke into the Raiders’ backfield, tackled Jack Horvath as he took a handoff, forced and jumped on a fumble to spot the Royals a short field. It was one of several times Korboi breached Radnor’s offensive line despite numerous double-teams.

Girls Soccer: Higgins’ rebound shot a winner for Penncrest

NEWTOWN SQUARE >> The last two weeks have been rough on Penncrest, and few have felt that as acutely as Tara Higgins. Thursday’s task for the sophomore wasn’t just to get up and down the wing, but to do so sporting a new sleeve over her left knee, a remnant of an injury picked up in Tuesday’s overtime loss to Conestoga. Add in an early Marple Newtown goal forcing Penncrest to chase Thursday’s Central League contest, and the latest installment of disappointment seemed inevitable for the Lions … until Higgins decided otherwise.

Higgins connected on a corner kick that rattled around in the box 55 seconds into overtime, helping the Lions banish some recent setbacks and score a 2-1 win. Gia Martyn delivered the corner, which danced chaotically through a couple of attempts to nudge it this way or that. It took a deflection off Penncrest defender Sarah Hughes and sat up perfectly for Higgins to lash with her right foot and deposit her eighth goal of the season.

Football: Upper Darby holds off Conestoga, 25-22

A heavy rainstorm muddied the grass field at Memorial Stadium and caused a 50-minute delay to the start of a Central League showdown Friday night between Conestoga and Upper Darby.

But the Royals’ Isaiah Bruce was barely slowed by the sloppy conditions, as the 5-foot-8, 178-pound workhorse showed when he plowed over a defender en route to a 57-yard, second-quarter touchdown reception.

With Bruce rushing for 216 yards on 31 carries and delivering three scores, Upper Darby, after leading by 19-0 at halftime, escaped the never-say-die Pioneers, 25-22, before a sparse crowd.

Football: Turner a Tiger in Marple Newtown’s win

SPRINGFIELD >> Marple Newtown defensive end Noah Turner played with controlled aggression Friday night. He was constantly getting to the backfield, disrupting Springfield’s ability to move forward with the ball. He was a monster. Then again, it’s the type of performance MN coach Chris Gicking has come to expect from his 6-2, 230-pound senior.

“Noah’s the quiet leader. All he does is work,” Gicking said. “He’s playing amazing right now.”

You bet. Turner was one of many outstanding defensive performers for the Tigers in their 9-3 victory.

“It was an old-school Central League game,” Gicking said.

Even better, it was Marple Newtown’s first win against Springfield since the 2009 season.

Boys Soccer: Wallace comes to Springfield’s defense in win

RADNOR >> Springfield’s Mike Wallace can count on one hand how many games he’s played in defense in his career. There were a few appearances in seventh grade as a sweeper, a few minutes of man-marking notable opponents here and there in high school … and not much else. Briefer still is the list of games he’s played this season thanks to an illness that cost him much of the preseason and the start of the campaign. Tuesday night was outing No. 2. But with senior captains and central defenders Justin Donnelly and Ryan Straube missing due to injuries, the trip to Radnor Tuesday looked as good a time as any augment both categories.

Wallace marshalled a cohesive and flawless defense, turning away waves of Radnor pressure and allowing a sensational early goal by Andrew Astrino to stand up in a 1-0 Central League win. Sans Straube and Donnelly, Springfield coach Jason Piombino had little choice but to test Wallace’s game fitness, which consisted of about a half of the Ridley game … at forward, where he scored a goal. The combination of lower physical demands in defense and the void of experience compared to Wallace’s innate soccer sense made it the right gamble.

Boys soccer: Lower Merion boys’ soccer coach Nico Severini earns 100th career win

When the Lower Merion High School boys’ soccer team defeated Harriton, 2-1, Oct. 1, it was the 100th career win for Aces’ head coach Nico Severini.
With the victory against Harriton, Severini has a win-loss-tie record of 100-33-10 (as of Oct. 5), which includes two years spent as head coach of the Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School boys’ soccer team and he is currently in his sixth year as the head coach of the Aces.

Sverini said, “I am very proud of reaching this [100 career win] milestone.  I do not take any achievement for granted as they are very difficult to accomplish, hopefully it is one of many more.  I love being around the game as a player and a coach, and soccer has been a passion for me since day one.  It helped create a special bond with my father.”

Severini is the son of the legendary Haverford High School boys’ soccer coach Jorge Severini, who coached the Fords for 22 years and passed away in October 2014. In 22 years as the head coach, Jorge Severini posted a 233-115-7 record that included a Central League title (1994) and 11 PIAA District One Class AAA playoff appearances. In 2011, Jorge Severini joined his son Nico at Lower Merion as an assistant coach and helped the team capture the 2013 Central League Championship.

Football: Mellet, defense come through for Upper Darby in shutout

MIDDLETOWN >> Upper Darby’s Scott Mellet had a pass deflection that led to one entertaining interception return. Mellet also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and scored on a 10-yard run. The linebacker/fullback had a big hand in the Royals’ 34-0 Central League victory over Penncrest Friday night at cold and rainy Louis Scott Stadium.

“Eventually they gave me my shot,” Mellet said with a smile. “I’ve fumbled a lot on the other carries that I got and I knew I had to redeem myself.”

Before he scored on offense, Mellet chased after Penncrest quarterback Manny Ruffin and got his hand in the air as Ruffin tried to swing the ball into the flat. The tipped pass dropped in the big arms of defensive tackle James King, who gave his best deer-in-the-headlights look. The 6-4, 260-pound junior froze for a second and then started running toward the Upper Darby sideline. Eventually he hooked left and headed toward the end zone. Alas, King was tripped up 13 yards of the goal line.

“It’s like that movie — what’s it called? — ‘The Replacements’” UD coach Richie Gentile said. “You know, when the big guy catches the ball and goes, ‘Oh ****, what now?’ That’s what it was like.”
