Girls Lacrosse: Garnet Valley fights its way back to title game

MECHANICSBURG — In their precise order, these were the emotions encountered and well-handled Tuesday by the Garnet Valley girls lacrosse team: Curiosity, shock, concern, resolve, relief, pride.

“I would be nervous no matter what in a state semifinal,’ Jaguars coach Jenny Purvis said. “But four goals down? That would do it.’

In advancing to the PIAA championship game, Garnet Valley needed to recover from that four-goal deficit with just more than 20 minutes to play to defeat Quaker Valley, 13-10, in a persistent drizzle at neutral-site Cumberland Valley High.

The Jaguars will meet Conestoga Saturday in Hershey, in what has become a standard: A championship-game match between District One teams. But if Quaker Valley, of Leetsdale, 18 miles from Pittsburgh, was some sort of mystery to the defending state-champion Jags, that novelty turned serious early.

By halftime, the Quakers had an 8-5 lead, and when Emily Kraus scored her second goal with 21:57 showing, the lead was four and the crisis was real.

Boys Lacrosse: Close call helped Springfiedld get re-focused

LOWER MERION — The Springfield boys lacrosse team has summited the mountain.

There is no denying that the Cougars are champions, having survived the most daunting gauntlet of a tournament that Pennsylvania (and maybe, high school lacrosse nationwide) has to offer in winning the District One title.

The realization of that goal required a re-stoking of the competitive fires before tackling the next peak. And the opponent that nearly extinguished that fire may prove the most instrumental in reigniting it.

There’s a sense among the Cougars (19-4) that its PIAA Tournament dream is already on its second life, having withstood squandering a four-goal lead then prevailing in overtime with a 9-8, twice-delayed win over Hershey in last Wednesday’s first round. That revitalization informs the preparation for Tuesday’s semifinal against Central League rival Radnor (4 p.m., Haverford High).

Boys Lacrosse: Baratelle’s battle an inspiration for Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — As Nick Baratelle sat in his hospital room May 8, he thought of one thing.

The restlessness of 20 days spent in the hospital bubbled inside him, and the 19-year-old was anxious to escape the whitecoats whose answers were incomplete and the exams whose results were inconclusive.

But as important as what he was hurrying from was what he was rushing to. Springfield’s boys lacrosse team had a game that afternoon, and with a glimmer of hope that he could be there in person for a team he’d followed so often in spirit over the previous months, he wasn’t going to miss out.

“I was rushing to the game, to get out of there,’ Baratelle said by phone Thursday. “I was taking my own staples out of my head.’

The last month and a half of Baratelle’s life has been a struggle, against tumors growing in his brain for reasons doctors can’t pinpoint. Through that ordeal, he’s found strength and solace in his former teammates — and always, brothers — from the lacrosse field.

Girls Lacrosse: Mathewson helps Garnet Valley survive controversy, Manheim

READING — Three PIAA officials worked Saturday’s girls lacrosse state tournament quarterfinal between Garnet Valley and Manheim Township at Exeter High School.

The Jaguars, the fifth seed out of District One, held off a rally by the District Three champion Blue Streaks to win, 14-12. Garnet Valley is headed to the semifinal round Tuesday to take on District Seven champion Quaker Valley, which disposed of District Seven runnerup Mt. Lebanon.

Normally, there is a fourth official on the sideline keeping track of substitutions, yellow card times and other factors that transpire outside the field of play. That person would have helped straighten out an issue concerning an illegal substitution early in the second half, which led to a 25-minute delay.

Garnet Valley scored to take a four-goal lead when Manheim Township coach Mark Pinkerton noticed that Rachel Glenn, who received a yellow card in the waning moments of the first half and had to serve the remainder of her penalty after halftime, was not the player who went back on the field for the Jags before the two-minute foul had expired.

Girls Lacrosse: Borzillo, Conestoga girls find redemption against Great Valley

Redemption felt sweet, especially for Monica Borzillo.

Just eleven days ago, Conestoga had fallen to Great Valley in the semifinals of the District 1 tournament. So Borzillo had revenge in mind Saturday afternoon when the teams met again in the PIAA quarterfinals at West Chester East.

Borzillo scored three goals and assisted on two others, and this time the Pioneers came away with a 12-9 victory.

“It’s like we just won the championship,” Monica Borzillo said. “It’s like total revenge. This game really showed how much heart we have and how much passion we have. We put it all out on the field.”
