READING — Three PIAA officials worked Saturday’s girls lacrosse state tournament quarterfinal between Garnet Valley and Manheim Township at Exeter High School.
The Jaguars, the fifth seed out of District One, held off a rally by the District Three champion Blue Streaks to win, 14-12. Garnet Valley is headed to the semifinal round Tuesday to take on District Seven champion Quaker Valley, which disposed of District Seven runnerup Mt. Lebanon.
Normally, there is a fourth official on the sideline keeping track of substitutions, yellow card times and other factors that transpire outside the field of play. That person would have helped straighten out an issue concerning an illegal substitution early in the second half, which led to a 25-minute delay.
Garnet Valley scored to take a four-goal lead when Manheim Township coach Mark Pinkerton noticed that Rachel Glenn, who received a yellow card in the waning moments of the first half and had to serve the remainder of her penalty after halftime, was not the player who went back on the field for the Jags before the two-minute foul had expired.
