Henry twins have Radnor seeing double in Strath Haven win

RADNOR — Sean Henry made 11 tackles Friday night for Strath Haven at Prevost Field, some high, some low, none that Ryan Henry hadn’t known was coming.

Ryan Henry rushed for 62 yards for the Panthers in a 54-7 victory over Radnor, some inside, some outside, none to the surprise of Sean Henry.

The twins have only been playing football and doing everything else together since they were born. Together – with help aplenty at every position – they made heavy contributions as the Panthers improved to 6-0 and 5-0 in the Central League.

There’s depth, which Kevin Clancy enjoys.

Then there is the kind of depth that comes in twos.

“They really are good players,” Clancy said. “They are leaders on our team, and every year they have been in the program, they have become better and better. And this year, they have become real leaders and have been invaluable on both the offensive and defensive sides. So it was nice to see them both really contribute tonight.”

On a night when any team churns out a 54-spot, chances are the defense can be lost in the blur. But with Sean Henry being disrupting throughout – along with fellow linebackers Marco Kaufman and Shane Green – the Panthers were able to limit Radnor to 23 rushing yards.

“I think defense is a big part of this team,” Sean said. “It plays a big part because it helps the offense get better opportunities. I just want to thank my teammates for helping me be one-eleventh of that group and to be in the right spot. They force the running backs to bounce out to me, helping me make some tackles.”

The defense in control throughout, Strath Haven smoothly rang out 513 yards of total offense, even on a wet surface. Ten Panthers made rushing contributions, led by James Fisher, who included a 39-yard TD run among his 125 yards.

Radnor was led by Bryce Cohen, who made 12 tackles in the secondary and raced 20 yards down the left side for a second-quarter touchdown. The Raptors managed 79 passing yards, including 45 from Matthew Szychulski to Michael Enright, but it was not enough to avoid falling to 1-5 and 0-3 in the Central.

“Strath Haven is just a machine,” Raptors coach Kyle Yeiter said. “We’ll have to go back to the drawing board. They have been running their offense to perfection for so many years. As a coaching staff, we’ll take a look at what we are doing, scheme it up and move on.”

A 13-yard Fisher ramble put the Panthers at the Radnor 1-yard line, and Green plowed in for an early lead. Fisher added a four-yard score late in the first quarter, before Cohen answered in the second, drawing the Raptors within 12-7.

Mike Turner, Mike Miller help keep Springfield’s ratings soaring

MIDDLETOWN — Springfield presented the Mike & Mike Show Friday night at Penncrest High.

It was a four-star performance.

Mike Turner scored four touchdowns on his first four carries. Mike Miller had a strip sack, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries. Those highlights all happened in the first three minutes of the first quarter.

Nobody broke a leg, literally speaking, and the two Mikes received two thumbs up from their adoring Springfield fan section. The duo enjoyed the spotlight as the Cougars cruised to a 49-7 Central League victory.

Turner ended with 135 yards on seven carries and Miller dominated on both the offensive and defensive lines. Together they helped the Cougars (5-1, 4-1) remind everyone that they are one of the best teams in Delaware County. They have the toughest front seven and perhaps the best offensive line as well. That unit is led by two-way tackle Gus Bryan, who treated Penncrest linemen like rag dolls all night.

Springfield exploded for 29 first-quarter points. The first of Turner’s four TDs was set up when Miller strip-sacked quarterback Paul Graham inside the Penncrest 10-yard line.

“We definitely wanted the momentum early on because we knew they got some close games under their belt,” Miller said. “We didn’t want a close game, we wanted to blow them out.”

Penncrest (3-3, 1-3) is one of the feel-good stories in the county this season. After so many years of futility, head coach Paul Graham and his staff have the program headed in the right direction. The Lions have their most wins in a season since 2019, when they went 3-8. And despite Friday’s loss Penncrest is in good position to have its first winning season since 2013. Even in their prior defeats the Lions played well, hanging with Central League frontrunners Strath Haven and Garnet Valley. But they didn’t have a chance against Springfield.

“We thought it was going to be a tough game,” Miller said.
