All Delco Wrestling Teams

The following wrestlers from the Central League were named to the All Delco Teams.

FIRST TEAM

David Bagirov, Springfield: Bagirov closed out his senior campaign with a flourish. He won his second straight Central League title, this time at 126 pounds after capturing the 120-pound crown as a junior. He placed fifth at the District 1 Class 3A Central tournament to advance to the South East Regional for the first time in his career. Bagirov also won the title at the Kurt Meister Invitational, went 8-0 in the Central, 25-8 for the season and 92-31 in his career, including a mark of 73-25 over the last three seasons.

Brendon Stocku, Penncrest: Like Poulos, Stocku’s season came to an unfortunate end because of a knee injury. Still, the junior 138-pounder was able to compile a 34-1 record, boost his career mark to 95-19 and earn All-Delco honors for the second year in a row. He needs 14 wins to break the program record of 108 held by his older brother and 2017 All-Delco Ryan. Brendon Stocku won 22 of his matches by fall, one by technical fall and six by major decision. His only loss was a 5-2 setback to Antonio Petrucelli in the semifinals of the Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic. Stocku avenged that loss with a 9-6 decision in the District Class 3A Central final.

Kyle Strazdus, Ridley: Strazdus began his senior season with four wins by fall in his first five matches, three in the first period. He went on to finish 21-12, place second at the Central League championships at 152 pounds and fifth at the District 1 Class 3A Central championships to qualify for the regional tournament for the first time in his career. Strazdus also went 3-0 with two pins at the Colley Classic.

John Crawford, Strath Haven: The junior was one of three Strath Haven wrestlers to win 30 matches, and one of two Panthers to win Central League titles and qualify for the PIAA championships. Crawford posted a 31-12 overall record and a 9-4 mark in the postseason. He won the Central League 160-pound crown, finished fourth at the District 1 Class 3A Central champs and second at the South East Regional tournament to earn a ticket to Hershey, where he went 1-2 in the state tournament.

Brett Burns, Strath Haven: Like Crawford, Burns was a 30-match winner for the Panthers, going 31-9 with 20 wins by fall. The senior wrestled at 195 and 182 pounds before dropping to 170 for good in the second match of the Panthers Duals on Feb. 10. From that point, Burns went 10-4, which included a seven-match winning streak. Of those 10 wins, three were by fall and three by major decision. Burns won the Central League title, finished second at districts and sixth at regionals. He closed out his career with a 61-21 record.

Griffin Salus, Garnet Valley: Salus was part of a strong contingent of wrestlers in the upper weights for the Jaguars that included 220-pounder Coltin Deery and Tommy Mahoney at 285. Although Salus only posted a 14-12 overeall record, most of his success came in the latter part of his senior season. Salus went 9-4 down the stretch to take third at the Central League championships and fifth at the District 1 Class 3A Central tournament to qualify for the regional tournament for the first time in his career, where he went 1-2.

Tommy Mahoney, Garnet Valley: Mahoney more than held his own against the best heavyweights in the state. The senior went 28-9. Five of those losses were to PIAA championship qualifiers, three to state medalists including state champ Isaac Reid of Kiski Area and West Mifflin’s Gerald Brown, who finished third. He strung together 13 straight wins at one point that included eight by fall. Two of his biggest wins were a pair of one-point victories over Strath Haven’s Lee Holbert for the Central League and District 1 Class 3A Central titles. He placed fourth at the South East Regional tournament to earn a spot in the PIAA championships.

Lee Holbert, Strath Haven: Holbert and Mahoney had three epic battles in the postseason. Mahoney won all three, two by one point, the second on an ultimate tie-breaker. Yet Holbert, a senior, was still able to equal the school record for wins in a season and work his way to the PIAA Championships for the first time in his career, where he went 1-2 with the win coming by fall. Holbert’s resume includes a 32-9 record as a senior, with second-place finishes at the Central League and District 1 Class 3A Central tournaments, and a fifth place at regionals. He closed out his career with a 75-54 mark

Girls Track- Wait ends for Tease, Garnet Valley in 4 x 200 record pursuit

HAVERFORD >> Maura Tease bounded across the infield at Haverford’s A.G Cornog Field as soon as Garnet Valley’s winning time in the 4 x 200-meter relay was announced. Fellow senior Meghan Arters had the same reaction, as did the other members of the team, junior Liz O’Brien and freshman Grace Zamrowski. Their goal was to break the school record in the event at the Girls Delco Relays and did so by nearly two seconds with a time of 1 minute, 47.90 seconds. The old record was 1:49.77 in a rare event that is not run at high school dual meets or postseason meets and is only at select invitationals.

“We figured this was our last chance to do it and we really wanted it,” Arters said.

“We’ve been working toward this since the beginning of the indoor season,” Tease said. “We kept getting closer and closer to it and to finally to it feels so good.”

The gold was the second of the day for Zamrowski, who teamed with Isabella Ha to win the high jump relay with a combined leap of 9 feet, 11 inches. Zamrowski turned in her personal best with a jump of 5-1.

“Yeah,” Zamrowski said. “I had a good day.”

She wasn’t alone in that aspect.

Symphonie Blalock turned in the best throws of her career to help Springfield win the shot put and discus relays. Meghan Lynch and Rylie Butler both came away with a pair of gold medals as Ridley took first in the 4 x 100, long and triple jump relays. Ava Crawford and Julia Benner were on two of the four relays that Strath Haven won.

Girls Lacrosse: Garnet Valley earns a little payback in win over Springfield

CONCORD >> Riley Delaney couldn’t come up with an exact number.

“They beat us each time they played us last year,” the Garnet Valley senior midfielder said of Springfield, which was the Jaguars’ Central League opponent at Moe DeFrank Stadium Thursday night.

“That’s why this game was so big for us.”

Delaney scored two of her three goals in the second half and got a first-half assist, senior Kamryn McNeal also had three goals, junior Kara Nealon chipped in with a pair of assists, and junior Madi McKee made eight draw controls to help Garnet Valley earn a 10-8 Central League girls lacrosse decision over Springfield.

The Jags (7-1 overall, 3-1 Central League) built a four-goal halftime lead, but saw it cut to one when Cougars junior Belle Mastropietro scored with 5:52 to play, capping a run in which Springfield scored five of the next six goals after Delaney opened the scoring in the second half.
McNeal completed her hat trick with a free-position shot 2:13 before the final whistle.

“You have to give Springfield credit,” Garnet Valley head coach Jenny Purvis said. “They changed their defense in the second half and forced us into (nine) turnovers. But (goalie Sam Hamalak) made some awesome saves and we held strong at the end.”

Softball: Stellar Sorrentino helps Upper Darby nip Ridley

RIDLEY >> While the temperature outside suggested otherwise, Wednesday’s Central League battle between Upper Darby and Ridley certainly had a warm and fuzzy playoff feel.

With two on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Rebecca Sorrentino stood in the pitcher’s circle, locked in on Ridley slugger Ashley Shanks. Sorrentino was determined to get some revenge on Shanks, who had homered against her earlier in the day.

Sorrentino battled back from two balls down in the count to get Shanks looking at a called third strike. The pitch was a nasty breaker that painted the inside of the plate.

“I was thinking that I better get her out or we’re going to lose. I knew if she hit something, it was going far,” said Sorrentino, a three-year starting pitcher for the Royals. “I threw a screwball to her (for strike three) and it got right on the corner of the plate. It felt pretty good.”

Sorrentino pumped her fist and celebrated with batterymate Lexi Witmer as Upper Darby claimed the 5-3 victory over Ridley.

This was a nice bounceback win for the Royals (3-1, 3-1 Central League) after dropping a heartbreaker at Conestoga Monday. Sorrentino deserved a better fate in that game, but Wednesday the Royals backed her with great defense and timely hitting.

Brooke Jones led the offensive attack for the Royals, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jones’ two-run single in the fifth inning snapped a 2-2 deadlock.

“We had to stay patient for the most part,” Jones said of facing Ridley pitcher Morgan Chapman, who struck out eight. “She was living on the outside (portion of the plate) for a while.”

Sorrentino helped her cause with a triple and scored on an RBI hit by Camryn Young in the fifth inning. Young finished with three singles and a pair of ribbies. Witmer doubled and scored a run, while Rylee Shanahan chipped in two singles and two runs scored.

Rebecca Sorrentino struck out 11 from the circle, tripled and scored a run as Upper Darby defeated Ridley in a Central League battle, 5-3.

Ultimately, though, this day belonged to Sorrentino, who was outstanding. She struck out 11, scattered seven hits, walked one and allowed two earned runs. She was in control the entire way.

Sorrentino, a junior, had a lot of success her freshman year as she helped a veteran team claim the Central League title. Last spring, the Royals struggled and failed to qualify for the District 1 Class 6A playoffs.

Baseball: Zimmerman keeps Marple Newtown in control of Strath Haven

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> Luke Zimmerman couldn’t resist the opportunity at Saint Joseph’s University. A Division I baseball program had recruited the Marple Newtown senior for his talents on the mound and in the batter’s box.

“I’m going in as a two-way player, so I’m going to hit and pitch,” Zimmerman said. “That, obviously, was very important. I like the coaches a lot, they’re good guys, and the kids I’m going in with … they’re all real nice kids. Looking forward to it.”

On April 9, though, Zimmerman is focused on leading Marple Newtown to its second consecutive District 1 Class 5A title. If he can be half as effective as he was Monday, the Tigers will be in pretty good shape. Zimmerman pitched six innings of dominant baseball in a 5-0 Central League victory over Strath Haven. Showcasing a repertoire that included a fastball, cutter, changeup and curve, Zimmerman struck out 11 and allowed only four hits and one walk.

“This offseason I worked a lot on switching up my wind-up,” Zimmerman said. “Late during the year (last season), especially during playoffs, I was having a little bit of trouble throwing strikes. This outing and in my last outing, I threw a lot of strikes.”

On a dreary 40-degree day, the 6-0, 215-pound Zimmerman had no issues with his command. He threw every one of his 92 pitches with conviction and didn’t give the Panthers any chance to get comfortable in the box.

“He was throwing a really nice curveball,” Strath Haven catcher Brady Mutz said. “He was painting corners for strikes and really hitting his spots. We just have to keep working and getting better every day.”

Zimmerman gave up a pair of singles in the first inning but was dominant the rest of the way. All-Delco shortstop Anthony Viggiano, who reached on an infield single, was thrown out by left fielder Andrew Cantwell while trying to go from first to third on a single by Mutz. It was the final out of the inning and, effectively, the last really good scoring chance Haven had against Zimmerman. The Panthers managed to get runners on first and second in the fourth, but Zimmerman squashed the threat when he struck out Jack Mon and got Andrew Yates to fly out to center fielder Reilly Fillman.

“Once I am out there throwing, I don’t even realize that it’s cold, to be honest,” Zimmerman said. “I was kind of locked in and I didn’t think about the weather.”

Zimmerman’s opposite number threw the ball very well through five innings. Haven starter Henry Dawes limited the Tigers to no runs on three singles until the sixth, when the visitors sent seven batters to the plate and scored two runs. Fillman reached on a one-out single, and Zimmerman laced a single to make it first and third with one out. Senior catcher Luke Cantwell shot a single through the hole at shortstop, enabling Fillman to score the game’s first run. Moments later, Zimmerman — who isn’t known for his fleet feet — swiped home plate on the front end of a delayed double steal. Zimmerman sprinted down the third-base line and dove headfirst safely to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.

All-Delco Swimming

The following swimmers from the Central League were named to the All Delco Teams:

FIRST TEAM

Patrick Cullen, Radnor: The junior was the best of the PIAA swimmers by a sizeable margin, and he has the states medal to prove it. Cullen got progressively faster in the 50 free this postseason, finishing first among the District 1 cohort at PIAA Class 3A Championships with a time of 20.83 that earned fifth place. He also made it back in the 100 free to take 15th at states. He joined James El-Deiry, Nick Mlodzienski and Andrew Davis in taking home fifth place at states in the 200 free relay and 13th in the 400 free. Cullen was third in the 50 and fourth in the 100 free at districts.

Claire Walsh, Penncrest: The junior didn’t relinquish her title as the preeminent sprinter in Delco, and while she didn’t quite hit the speeds of her freshman campaign, she earned a second All-Delco nod. Walsh finished sixth at states in the 50 free in 23.53, within three tenths of her best high school time. She finished eighth in the 100 free, her best time in prelims at 51.07. Walsh also medaled in both events at the District 1 championships, taking fourth in the 50 and seventh in the 100 while helping the Lions 200 medley and 400 free relays each finish 12th.

Noelle DiClemente, Garnet Valley: The junior freestyler earned her first All-Delco nod, emerging to lead a team that weathered the unexpected departure of 2017 All-Delco and county record-holder Madison Kolessar, who elected not to swim scholastically in her sophomore season. No matter, since DiClemente stepped into the role of relay closer. She earned four swims at states, her highest finish in the 50 free, where she won the B final in 23.74 seconds to finish ninth. She finished 18th in the 100 free and helped two Garnet Valley relays make states. The 200 free relay (which had medaled in fourth at the District 1 championships) was disqualified in prelims, but the 400 free made it back to finish 15th. DiClemente medaled in seventh in the 50 at districts and navigated a 100 free field that was so deep that her 16th place finish earned an at-large states bid.

Garnet Valley’s Noelle DiClemente, left, poses with her certificate for winning first place in the 50 freestyle at the Central League championships. She finished a spot ahead of fellow All-Delco Claire Walsh of Penncrest, center.

All-Delco Hockey: Ridley’s Giampapa picked up where he left off

The following players from the Central League were named to the All Delco Hockey Teams.

FIRST TEAM

Michael Giampapa, Sr., forward, Ridley >> The 2017 Daily Times Player of the Year followed up his award-winning junior season with an even better campaign in 2017-18. Giampapa added physicality to his repertoire, while continuing to pile up points at a ridiculous rate. He scored a goal in all but one game, totaling 44 in 18 contests. As the Central League’s top scorer and perhaps its most respected player, Giampapa was indispensable to a Green Raiders squad that was rebuilding in more ways than one. Ridley scored 102 goals this season. Giampapa, with his 44 goals and 34 assists, had a hand in 78 of them. He closes his career with 265 points, including regular season and Flyers Cup play.

Mike Irey, Jr., forward, Strath Haven >> The bigger the game, the bigger Irey played. So it’s been for two seasons as the do-everything center has keyed the Panthers’ resurgence. Irey led Strath Haven with 29 goals in 22 games, including two overtime winners. He scored three times in a run to the Flyers Cup A semifinals, where the Panthers fell just short against West Chester East. Irey scored a third-period goal to bring Haven within one and peppered the Vikings’ net-minder until the final whistle of a 5-3 defeat. Physical, fast and packing a heavy wrist shot, Irey was called a “bull,” in a complimentary way, by East head coach Eric Wolf.

Dante Gattone, Sr., defenseman, Haverford >> Gattone’s 19 goals and team-high 45 points give the impression that he was a purely offensive defenseman, but that wasn’t the case. He was often creating odd-man rush opportunities from his own defensive zone, picking off passes and skating down opposing forwards and forcing them into turnovers. Then Gattone would turn on the jets the other way. He was a 200-foot defensemen, who, despite moving freely on the ice, was rarely caught out of position. Gattone was at his best during the Fords’ surprising run to the Central League title game, scoring three goals and two assists in three games as Haverford finished second to Conestoga.

Conestoga’s Brendan Burns reaches whole new level at states

TREDYFFRIN >> Looking back, it’s pretty clear that 2018 Daily Local News All-Area Boys Swimmer of the Year Brendan Burns was destined for greatness. The Conestoga junior, who is a four-time state champion and high school All-American, comes from a swimming family and was raised in what appears to be a perfect environment to develop his burgeoning aquatic skills.   Burns’ parents, Eric and Heather, met through a masters swimming program at a YMCA in Connecticut. His mom competed collegiately at Miami (Ohio). His dad — like his grandfather — swam at Southern Connecticut State. And Brendan Burns was introduced to the pool when he was an infant.

“Swimming is integral in my family — it kind of runs everything,” Burns pointed out. “Our schedule for vacation and family events kind of rotates around swimming schedules.”

With that kind of background, it’s easy to see why Burns is an accomplished swimmer. But add in a legendary work-ethic, a laser-like focus and a fierce competitive instinct, and you can see how he’s developed into the most outstanding swimmer in Conestoga history.

“Brendan is amazing,” said his ’Stoga teammate Owen Neuman. “He is so good, but he is very humble about it. We love having him on our team.”

Just three-quarters of the way through his high school career, Burns has already accumulated 10 medals at the PIAA Class 3A championships. And last month at Bucknell, he reached the pinnacle after being named the “Most Outstanding Swimmer” at the state meet.

“Baseball was my first love,” Burns acknowledged. “Then I got into swimming soon thereafter. I split my time between the two until I won my first YMCA Pennsylvania State Title in the 50 butterfly when I was 10.

“That was a pivotal moment and from then on I put a lot more focus on swimming. When I was 12, I gave up baseball for swimming, and I haven’t looked back.”

As a freshman, Burns took home three medals from Bucknell, including a bronze in the 100 butterfly.

“At states, there are a handful, at most, of freshmen that are going to the podium,” said Conestoga coach Mark Tirone. “Brendan is a workhorse. He knows his body, he listens to his body, and he knows how to push it in training.”

In 2017, Burns was crowned state champion in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and then he defended both titles in March. In the butterfly, his winning time of 47.04 was a new state record. In the backstroke, he established a personal best time of 46.93, which was also a school record.
