Softball: Young additions have Upper Darby on the rise

SPRINGFIELD >> In addition to having the talent to win a Central League championship, Upper Darby is using the element of surprise to roll over teams this season. With three freshmen in the starting lineup, they are putting the league on notice. The nucleus was in place last spring, when the Royals showed flashes of their potential. And those freshmen? Pitcher Rebecca Sorrentino has thrown every game. Her batterymate, Lexie Witmer, has been a two-way threat with her bat and work behind the plate. Camryn Young has flourished at the most premium position on the field — shortstop — while also excelling with the bat.

All-Delco center fielder Sam Witmer, Lexie’s big sister, anticipated this could be the year the Royals developed into a top-flight Central League program again, following a few rebuilding years. “We knew we had these three freshmen coming up, and we knew nobody knew about them,” said Sam, a junior. “We knew that, as long as we hit and played solid defense, we would (do well).” Witmer’s assessment proved true as Upper Darby defeated Springfield, 5-2, Thursday afternoon.

Not only did the Royals stay undefeated and take sole possession of first place, they became the first Central League team to beat Springfield in nearly two years. “It feels pretty good,” Sam Witmer said. “They’ve been the big team for two years or whatever, and now, we finally get to beat them.” “Since Day One, we’ve wanted to beat them,” Lexie added. “We knew they were the No. 1 team.”

The Witmer girls engineered a four-run rally in the sixth inning. Erin Redden led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Anderson. Lexie Witmer then delivered a rocket to the gap in right-center for an RBI double.  Batting cleanup, Sam Witmer  immediately followed with an RBI single to push UD’s lead to 3-0. A bout of shoddy defense permitted the Royals to tack on two insurance runs against All-Delco Springfield ace Tori DePietro, who allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.

“We had good at-bats (in the fifth inning),” Lexie Witmer said. ‘We knew, right off the bat, that she was throwing it right down the middle. Strikes, for the most part. So, we just went out and said, let’s swing at the first pitch. That’s what we did, and it just kept going.”

Softball: Springfield holds off O’Hara in softball

As the nine-hole hitter for the Springfield softball team, Kaylee Lennon usually walks to the plate with her teammates already on base. Which means it’s the leftfielder’s job to move them or help them across the plate.

In the bottom of the third inning Wednesday, Lennon experienced that familiar feeling as she walked to the batter’s box with Hannah Sweeney on second base. It was a scoreless game and Lennon got the bunt sign from coach Todd Odgers. She knew that laying it down just right was critical to get her team going. So she did her job. Lennon got the bunt down and Sweeney scored the first run of the game on a throwing error as the Cougars went on to subdue a comeback from Cardinal O’Hara in a 5-3 victory.

“There is always pressure when you are up to bat because you want to pull through for your team,” Lennon said. “But I think there was extra pressure to get it started with the bunt.”

All-Delco Wrestling: Cronin always had ‘the look’ of a champion

UPPER DARBY >> Colin Cronin looked the part of a wrestler before he ever stepped foot on a mat. At age seven, he had a unique way of playing football. Cronin would run through opponents rather than around them. On the defensive side, he lifted ball-carriers off their feet with ease, including his current Upper Darby wrestling teammate, Max Livingston.

“That’s how I tackled,” Cronin remembers. “I picked kids up and slammed them.” Livingston’s father took notice of the tackling form and encouraged Mr. Cronin to sign up young Colin for wrestling.

“My dad was like, ‘No, I don’t want to do that,’” Cronin recalls. “‘I don’t want him to get hurt or anything.’ Mr. Livingston had to convince him to bring me to one practice and see how I’d like it.” Cronin came home from that session with a bloody lip much to the dismay of his mother. His father wasn’t too keen on the sport either. He played basketball, baseball and football growing up and thought Colin might do the same. It was too late, though. The younger Cronin was hooked.

“I was like, ‘Mom, I kind of like it, you know,’” Cronin says with a laugh. “It was pretty fun.” He’s still enjoying his time on the mat. As a junior, Cronin spearheaded a Royals team that became the first in school history to reach the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships. Upper Darby also won its 14th Central League title, the most of any program.

On an individual level, Cronin, a 138-pounder, achieved two noteworthy milestones. He took home a fourth-place medal at the state meet, becoming the Royals’ highest finisher since Joel Edwards won the 189-pound weight class in 2001. And with a victory in the District One West Championship, Cronin became the first Upper Darby junior with 100 career wins.

“I didn’t really notice at all. I kept going with the flow,” says Cronin, who finished 42-3 on the season. “My main goal was getting on the podium at state. But you know, it was pretty cool being the first junior and stuff. Getting the 100 wins is a huge mark in Pennsylvania.”

So, too, is Cronin. He is the 2016 Daily Times Wrestler of the Year.

After its historic campaign, Upper Darby placed five wrestlers on the All-Delco First Team including Cronin, Jake Mejias (113 pounds), Max Livingston (152), Brian Kennerly (195) and Pete Augustin (285). Garnet Valley’s Matt Marino (120) and Nick Puliti (132) return to the team as both reached the state tournament for the second consecutive year. Abraham Charles (138) of Penn Wood is one of two Del Val representatives on the squad along with Interboro’s Eric Thomas (145). Penncrest senior Liam Frank (170) returns to the All-Delco team after missing the entirety of the 2014-15 season with a torn ACL. Completing the team are Strath Haven’s David Moore (160), Archbishop Carroll’s Nick Poulos (126), Ridley’s Nate Brennan (182), Episcopal Academy’s Blair Orr (106) and the Haverford School’s Mickey Kober (220). The All-Delco teams and Wrestler of the Year are picked by the Daily Times staff in consultation with area coaches.

Tennis: Lower Merion proves dominance over Wissahickon

LOWER GWYNEDD >> Mark Daniels has been working a two-year plan to get his Wissahickon boys tennis team into the PIAA playoff. One of keys to his plan is scheduling top-notch talent for his team to play. It doesn’t get much tougher than what was on the Trojans plate Wednesday — a matchup with the defending state champion Lower Merion.

“It wasn’t about a win or loss because we knew it was going to be tough to beat these guys,” Daniels said. “It was about playing tough and heart out there and not going away quick.”

Ben Wolfe was the only Wissahickon singles player to capture a victory on the afternoon as his opponent Thibault Vernier had to default after the first set that was won by Wolfe 6-1. Wissahickon  secured a doubles victory as the No. 4  team of Thomas O’Farrell and  Anthony Lee defeated Aseda Adebamgbe and Harrison Axelrod, but the defending state champs were too much as they defeated the Trojans 5-2.

“Ben Wolfe, even though his guy got hurt, he was playing pretty well,” Daniels said. “I think he would have beaten him regardless, he’s been training pretty hard.”

“Fourth doubles had a nice win because they were down 3-5 in the first set and came back in the first set. That’s what we wanted to do, show fight like that.”

All-Delco Swimming: For Hart and Boratto, camaraderie is reward enough

HAVERFORD >> In her stellar career, Maddie Hart has collected accolades aplenty — medals, records, trophies, All-American recognition. She’s raced the best talents in one of the country’s deepest veins of swimming excellence, establishing her place within that hierarchy. But after four years at Haverford High, through eight states medals including two golds and three silvers, she reserves the warmest memories for something much less tangible.

“I don’t really remember any of my times throughout the year or what places I’ve finished,” Hart said. “I remember having an amazing team. I honestly don’t remember a single race, but I’ll always remember after the race, being able to hug my teammates or having my coach Matt (Stewart) give me a huge high five and have a smile on his face. That’s what makes me really proud.

“When I think back to states memories, hugging my teammates and high-fiving my team after races is the one thing that stands out.” Hart’s history is well chronicled. The youngest of four swimming siblings, Hart burst on to the scene as a freshman. Records and medals have followed at a steady pace, and the tide didn’t slow this season. She won a District One Class AAA title in a district record time in the 100 butterfly, then finished runner-up to Pennridge’s Brittany Weiss in the 100 backstroke, knocking her out of contention for the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honor that she garnered as a junior.

At states, Hart rose to the occasion once again, dashing her Delco mark by winning the 100 fly in 53.35, an automatic All-American time. To illustrate how fast her career has been, consider that until 2014 the 100 fly Delco record had held since 1985 at 56.90 seconds, set by Garnet Valley’s Jen Ritins. Two EA swimmers (McKenzie Street and Emily Rhodes) have claimed the record for brief periods, but no one has lowered it as drastically as Hart.

All-Delco Swimming Teams

Claire Walsh, Penncrest: The freshman started her high school career with a run of sprint victories that rewrote the record books. She ends her freshman campaign owning county marks in the 50 free (23.20 seconds) and 100 free (50.76). She upended Emily Baturka’s five-year-old standard in the former and was nearly a second faster than Seiberlich’s record in the latter. More pertinently, Walsh constantly dropped time as the season progressed. In the 50, she went from 24.14 seconds to set a Central League meet record to 23.59 in winning the District One Class AAA title to 23.39 in prelims, then 23.20 in finals at the PIAA Class AAA Championships en route to a silver medal and an auto All-American time. In the 100, she nearly pulled a next-to-last-heat upset at districts, settling for second in 51.18, then topped out at 50.76 (an All-American consideration time) at states en route to fourth place.

Frances Resweber, Strath Haven: The senior gets her third straight All-Delco nod, solidifying her place among Delco’s most accomplished distance swimmers. The Davidson commit posted the fastest time in the county in the 500 free by over nine seconds, an All-American consideration cut of 4:55.21. She was second to Seiberlich in the 200 free (1:51.32). She finished second in the 200 free and third in the 500 at the District One Championships while guiding Haven’s freestyle relays to states, where they finished 14th and 17th. At states, Resweber rebounded from a disappointing morning swim in the 200 that landed her in 10th place. She returned the next day to improve on her districts finish by claiming second in the 500.

Julia Cullen, Radnor: The sophomore two-time All-Delco is emblematic of the depth in Delco and District One. She couldn’t crack the A final in either of her events at the PIAA Championships, taking 10th place in the 100 fly and 100 free, yet both times are All-American consideration cuts. Her best time in the 100 fly came at districts, where she claimed fourth in 55.84 seconds. She was 12th in the 100 free at La Salle in a relatively sluggish 52.55, but she made the most of her second chance at states, dropping over a second to 51.28 in finals. Cullen helped Radnor’s medley relay finish 13th at states.

Greg Giannella, Radnor: The junior sprinter was the lone Delco swimmer to qualify for states in two events. He failed to final in either, finishing 25th in the 50 free and 30th in the 100 free, but he contributed to two Raiders relays that made finals, earning 12th in the 200 free and 15th in the 400. Giannella posted the second-fastest 50 time in the county at 21.89 seconds to earn sixth at districts. His relay split of 20.72 was the fastest in the county. He registered a 47.42 in December in the 100 free, slightly quicker than the 47.81 that garnered seventh at districts and the fourth-quickest time in Delco.
