Girls Basketball: Garnet Valley holds on to secure state berth

CONCORD — When the district basketball playoffs begin, the easy way for a team to qualify for the PIAA Tournament is to win its first two district games.

Fourth-seeded Garnet Valley found out that hosting No. 13 Cheltenham Wednesday wouldn’t be as easy as it might have seemed after a one-sided opening-round romp past Upper Merion last week.

The Jaguars (23-2) put on an amazing shooting display in the third period Wednesday, then they held on as the Panthers (18-6) did their best to match them. In the final eight minutes, Garnet Valley lost leading scorer Macy Goldbach (18 points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist, one blocked shot) 2:38 before the game ended and made only two field goals.

Down the stretch, the Jags who took the court took turns coming up with key plays as Garnet Valley earned its ticket to the state tourney by claiming a 52-48 decision over Cheltenham.

Boys Basketball: Penncrest can’t solve Lower Merion in setback

LOWER MERION — The look on Mike Doyle’s face, the combination of regret and necessary resilience, said it all Wednesday night.

For three and a half quarters, Doyle’s Penncrest team played Lower Merion even. They did enough to stay close in their District One Class AAAA second-round game, but ultimately not enough to get over the top in a 47-36 loss to the No. 12 seed Aces.

“We know we played them even for three quarters,’ the senior guard said. “Maybe if we make some shots, we win this game.’

Boys Basketball: Academy Park off the mark in loss to Conestoga

TREDYFFRIN — The District One Class AAAA basketball seedings looked just about right judging by what happened here Wednesday night.

Top-seeded Conestoga, which was extended in its first playoff start, cruised to a 54-31 win over a worthy opponent in 17th-seeded Academy Park.

The Pioneers (22-3) entertain Ridley, the ninth seed, in the quarterfinals this Friday.

Diving: Van Vladricken, Gibbons carrying on Ridley tradition

RIDLEY TWP. — Even as he glances up at the banner heralding a pair of state championships, Ridley diving coach John Dyer is reticent to take any semblance of credit. Luck, Dyer insists, was behind the run of 11 straight seasons of divers representing the Green Raiders at the PIAA Championships, capturing 13 medals from 2001-11, including a pair of golds thanks to Josh Bonner in 2003 and 2004. Dyer’s role in that dominant decade, he admits with earnest humility, was to simply manage the fortuitous pipeline that produced one standout after another.

Girls Swimming: Haverford’s Reed surges to victory in 100 ******

RADNOR — The conspicuous absence of defending champion Gab Rudy threw the doors to the girls 100 breaststroke wide open at the Central League Championship Saturday.

The race that ensued did not disappoint, with Cassandra Reed of Haverford notching a come-from-behind victory.

Wrestling: Upper Darby proves it’s in a league of its own

LOWER MERION — Upper Darby coach Bob Martin had a simple message for his team.

“I said to the kids, ‘ If you’re gonna be Central League champs, let’s close it out,” the veteran coach recalled. His Royals did just that, coasting to victory Saturday in the Central League Tournament at Harriton High School. The regular season champions, to the tune of an 11-0 record, dominated with 208.5 points.

Girls Basketball: Garnet Valley has to take it up a notch in Round 2

Garnet Valley players will admit they didn’t play their best basketball in last Friday’s District One Class AAAA first-round win over 29th-seeded Upper Merion. Nevertheless, good teams find a way, and the No. 4 Jaguars (22-2) ultimately took care of business against an inferior opponent. They used a 21-0 run in the first half to pull away and led by 19 points at halftime.

The second round marks an entirely new challenge. By the looks of it, 13th-seeded Cheltenham (18-5) could be GV’s toughest opponent to date.

Boys Basketball: Ridley Wings it to reach quarterfinals

RIDLEY TWP. — The recipe for Julian Wing Tuesday night was fairly simple: When Great Valley’s zone defense afforded him open looks from 3-point land, Wing didn’t give it a second thought.

“I’m just confident in my shot,’ Wing said. “I just want to keep shooting.’

Wing, who celebrated his 17th birthday in style, didn’t force the looks, but he took every bit of what the defense gave him, hitting all five of his 3-point looks en route to 21 points and a 57-40 Ridley win in the second round of the District One Class AAAA Tournament, booking the Green Raiders their first berth to states since 2013.

Boys Basketball: 1st Round of District 1 AAAA Playoffs

Springfield vs WC Henderson

If Springfield isn’t the first team to advance in the District One Class AAAA basketball playoffs despite managing just one second-half field goal, they’ve got be the last squad to do it. The 20th-seeded Cougars’ unconventional 45-42 upset of No. 13 seed West Chester Henderson Friday night was made possible by converting a season-best 25 free throws, including 18 in the second half.

Marple Newtown vs. Methacton

A 76-60 final score can tell a lot of stories. In a game between a No. 2 seed and a No. 31, those stories can be misleading. A margin that wide generally indicates a blowout, where the lower-ranked team is clearly overmatched. Despite the score, that was not the case at Methacton in Friday night’s District One first-round playoff tilt with the visiting Marple Newtown Tigers.

The Tigers led by as many as five in the second quarter and were down by just three in the fourth, but Methacton’s stellar group of seniors turned on the jets and pulled away to head to the second round.

Penncrest vs Pennwood

Ten minutes after the buzzer sounded, 10 minutes after the euphoria on the court, guard Mike Doyle was still amped up. His Penncrest Lions, the No. 28 seed in the District One Class AAAA tournament, had just upset fifth-seeded host Penn Wood, 56-53, in overtime Friday at The Shoebox. Nobody thought they were going to win.

He knew it. His team knew it. “Nobody thought we were supposed to be here,’ Doyle said. “That’s what makes this so great.’

Ridley vs WC Rustin

His team’s double-digit fourth quarter lead had been winnowed to four, and a spirited and a relentless West Chester Rustin squad was threatening to cut the deficit even further with a little over three minutes remaining in the game.

But just when Friday’s District One Class AAAA opening-round skirmish appeared to be slipping from Ridley’s grasp — and the rowdy, electric green-clad Sixth Man student section had quieted to a church whisper — Brett Foster stepped up once again to ensure the Green Raiders’ improbable postseason run would continue.

Boys Basketball: Springfield hoping roller-coaster year yields thrills vs. Henderson

There’s a little bit of a chuckle from Kevin McCormick when he says his team has had “a unique year”. It’s about the only way to describe a season which has featured losses to Cardinal O’Hara and Strath Haven (teams with nine combined wins) yet also wins at Lower Merion and over Penncrest and Ridley. Winners of six straight, Springfield gets a trip to No. 13 West Chester Henderson (15-7) Friday night, their confidence running high.
