All-Delco Wrestling: Marino, Dambro took Garnet Valley to historic states berth

The All-Delco first team includes:

Anthony Petril, Upper Darby: A second-team All-Delco selection last season, the senior compiled a 33-7 record for a 97-17 career mark and was ranked fifth at 106 in the final PA-Wrestling.com District 1 rankings. For the second consecutive year, he finished runner-up in sectionals and placed third at districts — including a tough 3-2 loss to the eventual district champ.

Austin Petril, Upper Darby: The two-time All-Delco was a rock that Royals coach Bob Martin could rely on, compiling a 117-18 mark over his four seasons. He ended his career with three consecutive sectional titles and a 32-3 season record — with just one loss heading into districts. He might team up with his twin brother Anthony at Ursinus.

Michael Marino, Garnet Valley: A finalist for Wrestler of the Year consideration, the three-time All-Delco set the Jaguars program record for wins with a 147-33 career record. A three-time champ at sectionals and districts, Marino never finished worse than third in three regionals and culminated his 39-10 campaign with his second consecutive sixth-place finish at states. His college plans are not finalized.

Pat Callaghan, Marple Newtown: A breakout star for first-year coach Pat Crater, the senior went from a third-team All-Delco selection last season to the Outstanding Wrestler at the Central League championships, where he won the 126-pound title. Callaghan won sectional and district championships, placed fourth at regionals and his magical 35-4 campaign improved his career mark to 88-24. He will attend the University of Pittsburgh.

Dennis Charamella, Springfield: Charamella made a quantum leap in his performance as a senior for the Cougars. He went 34-5 to improve his career mark to 91-48, won a sectional title after finishing no higher than fourth in three previous seasons, and was district runner-up after failing to place in his first three trips. He will play lacrosse at the University of Tampa.

Sean Lyons, Garnet Valley: A third-team All-Delco selection last season, the versatile senior consistently wrestled up at 152 and 160 to help the Central League champion Jaguars become the first Delco program to qualify for the state duals. Lyons went 28-11, finished runner-up at sectionals and placed third at districts. He plans to attend Villanova.

Tom Meyers, Radnor: This junior stepped up to provide leadership for the Raiders, going unbeaten over his first 31 matches and improving on his previous year’s runner-up finish to take the sectional championship. Meyers also reached the finals at districts in closing out his campaign at 31-3 and boosting his career mark to 81-15.

Johnny Dambro, Garnet Valley: A finalist for Wrestler of the Year consideration, the two-time All-Delco fashioned a remarkable 41-6 campaign that included his third consecutive sectional championship, his first district and regional titles and a return trip to states where he claimed a sixth-place medal. After finishing his Jags career at 114-39, Dambro is headed to Millersville.

Liam Frank, Penncrest: The sophomore proved that he is the real deal, earning his second All-Delco selection with a 32-7 season. Frank captured his second sectional title and won the district crown after finishing runner-up as freshman. Even with a 60-15 career mark, he should be extra motivated to claim his first regional medal.

All-Delco Ice Hockey: Riddle in the middle of Springfield attack

In addition to Daily Times Player of the Year Ryan Brawley of Springfield, the rest of the All-Delco team includes:

Kyle Riddle, Springfield: The diminutive forward returns to the All-Delco team after leading Springfield in assists (40) and points (66) during the regular season. He added three goals and four assists in four Flyers Cup games as the Cougars reached the Class A final for the third consecutive year. Riddle, a senior, centered a line that included his younger brother, Tyler. Together they amassed 124 points in 23 regular-season games. A deft passer, the elder Riddle was especially lethal on a Springfield power play that carried a 35-percent success rate. Brawley’s top line routinely drew the opponent’s best checkers, which in turn opened up space for Riddle’s second unit, so much so that Riddle’s contributions drew Player of the Year consideration from some coaches.

Nico Gricco, Garnet Valley: An All-Central League selection, Gricco combined with linemate Joseph Dangelantonio to front a Garnet Valley offense that scored 131 goals. He was the provider on a consistently dangerous top line. Gricco finished with 39 assists in 21 games as the Jaguars took the Central League regular-season title. While his high-scoring linemate stole many of the headlines with his goal scoring, Gricco’s all-around game rarely went unnoticed. He killed penalties and centered the Jaguars top power-play unit. Gricco was also Garnet Valley’s best faceoff man. Gricco scored 62 points in 19 Central League games, tied for most in the league … with Dangelantonio. Gricco saved his best for the tough games. In two early matchups with Springfield, the dynamic forward scored six points. His five-point effort in a 7-3 win in January culminated Garnet Valley’s first regular-season sweep of the Cougars in program history.

Joseph Dangelantonio, Garnet Valley: The Garnet Valley senior makes his first All-Delco team in his first season of high school hockey. Dangelantonio honed his stick-handling skills playing roller hockey growing up before he took to the ice in the fall. The results were immediate and massive. With the gifted Gricco feeding him the puck, Dangelantonio scored a county-leading 41 goals, many of the spectacular variety. The winger had 13 multi-goal games and eight hat tricks. Dangelantonio’s finest moment came in the Central League semifinals when he scored four third-period goals to lead the Jaguars to a come-from-behind 5-2 win over Lower Merion. Fast, shifty, with incredible hands, the sniper was all but unstoppable in one-on-one situations.

Steve Cavaliere, Springfield: Arguably the hardest hitter in the county, Cavaliere relished the opportunity to line up opposing forwards. He single-handedly shifted the balance of Springfield’s Flyers Cup Class A semifinal victory over West Chester East with a series of devastating, but legal, body checks. The junior defenseman provided much needed stability on a young Cougars blue line. Cavaliere wasn’t just an imposing defensive presence, though. He utilized his terrific skating ability to carry the puck out of trouble. Cavaliere, a former forward, also played in front of the net on the Cougars top power-play unit. Seven of his 14 points came with the man advantage. On a team that featured three 50-point producers and three All-Delcos, Cavaliere was often Springfield’s most dominant player. He was selected to the Flyers Cup Class A all-tournament team.

Steve McCrossin, Haverford: The Fords captain struck an imposing figure on the blue line. McCrossin stands well over 6 feet tall, but moved with the ease of a much smaller forward. His combination of reach and mobility provided a dual threat to opposing teams. He could shut down opponents’ top lines while starting rushes for his teammates. McCrossin had five multi-point games and 16 points in 18 regular-season games. McCrossin’s dominance keyed Haverford’s improvement from nine wins a season ago to 14 this year. McCrossin also earned first team All-Central League honors.

Joey Harant, Haverford: Harant played more minutes and made more saves than any goalie on the Central League’s top five teams. The junior carried a sparkling 2.33 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. He also posted two shutouts. Harant’s performance in net influenced Haverford’s success more than any other player. He was the only county goaltender to beat both Springfield and Garnet Valley, the two highest-scoring teams in the league. Harant was particularly dominant down the stretch as Haverford won nine of its final 11 league games. The netminder recovered from a vicious collision that knocked him out of the Central League semifinal against Springfield, an eventual 7-1 loss, to make 28 saves in a Flyers Cup AA win over Central Bucks West.

Ridley's Jonathon Kline, left, goes for the puck under pressure from Garnet Valley's Nico Gricco in a game earlier this season. Gricco, who finished the season with 39 assists, formed a dangerous duo with linemate Joseph Dangelantonio. (Robert J. Gurecki)

All-Delco Ice Hockey Player of the Year: Springfield’s leading man was unmistakably Brawley

SPRINGFIELD — As an eighth-grader, Ryan Brawley watched Springfield hockey from the bleachers. It was March and the Cougars, in what has become an annual event, were playing in the Flyers Cup Class A final. Brawley was enamored with everything he saw.

“It seemed like the entire school was there,” he said. “It was cool and exciting. I couldn’t believe that I was going to be there in a year.”

His brother, Sean, was a senior on that Springfield squad. Older brother Kevin had preceded them both. Eric, the third brother, was on the rise in the Cougars system. All three played in multiple Flyers Cups, part of the growing tradition of Springfield hockey.

The career of Ryan, the youngest brother, culminated the Brawley’s reign, a hockey family with a hockey name.

“It was a huge part of my family when I was younger,” Ryan Brawley said. “My dad had me on the ice when I was 2 or 3 years old. My three older brothers played for Springfield. I’m the last one to come through.”

He is the last … and perhaps the most accomplished. In four years for the Cougars, Ryan Brawley appeared in four Flyers Cup finals, winning one. He was part of an undefeated Central League team as a junior. He led Springfield in points as a sophomore and in goals as a junior and senior.

Brawley is a three-time All-Delco performer and, after reaching career highs in all three major offensive categories, the 2014 Daily Times Player of the Year.

But Brawley is not one to hold such accolades over people’s heads, namely his brothers’.

“I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without them,” he said. “I owe them credit rather than having bragging rights.”
