Boys Basketball: Haverford’s states team a throwback to 1970 squad

HAVERFORD — It’s been more than a while for Haverford High.

The Fords haven’t appeared in the PIAA boys state basketball tournament in their 39-year-old head coach’s lifetime. The last time they qualified for states, the players were coming off the summer of Woodstock.

The streak ends this weekend when the Fords open states against York High at Dallastown Area High, a two-hour drive from campus.

For the first time since 1970 — and if Keith Heinerichs can help it, hopefully not the only time in the next 40-some years — the Fords find themselves in the state tournament. It means a lot to the players, the school and the community.

One of the alums hung a Fords basketball jersey atop a business establishment on nearby and traditionally staid Brookline Boulevard. Heinerichs requested an extra stash of tickets to keep up with the demand.

Even the foot traffic has increased in front of the basketball trophy case in the lobby of the high school. It chronicles the spectacular 1958 group that the late Stephen Juenger guided to Haverford High’s only state hoops title as well as the ’70 team defeated in the final.

“Last year at this time we were doing conditioning and getting ready for next year,’ Heinerichs said. “And here we are still playing basketball. It’s a tribute to the work ethic and the commitment of everybody involved, the players, the coaches and how much time everybody put in from driving to Lancaster on weekends and going to Allentown to play in tournaments, to St. Joe’s team camp. It’s nice to see when hard work pays off.’

Work pretty much defines Fords basketball, now and then.

Wrestling: Pin sends Garnet Valley’s Dambro into quarterfinals

HERSHEY — Moments after qualifying for Friday’s PIAA State Class AAA wrestling quarterfinals, John Dambro joked that he’s in favor of anything that will get him out of school early.

So Garnet Valley’s 170-pounder was definitely on board when Jaguars coach Rocco Fantazzi announced that he would be bringing Dambro and his teammate/best friend Michael Marino to the Giant Center the day before the tournament got underway in this cavernous arena.

“I thought it would be good to get them back into this environment,’ Fantazzi said of Wednesday’s trip up the turnpike.

“We had a short week after a very tough weekend (at regionals), with more weather to deal with,’ the coach continued. “The guys were tired and sore and there wasn’t much to be done with their conditioning, training or technique, so I thought it was more important to get them back to the arena, let them roll around on the mats and just let them breathe it all in.’

Dambro was thankful for the opportunity to settle himself.

“Getting up here (early), getting to run around on the mats and getting used to the atmosphere helped a lot,’ Dambro said following his 5-minute, 39-second opening-round pin of Central Mountain junior Gavin Caprio.

Friday’s quarterfinal round starts at 1:30 p.m., with Dambro going up against Big Spring senior Cody Seibert.

Marino and Penn Wood’s Karon Lucas-Tillery, who lost their first-round matches, battled back to win in the consolation bracket and will continue to wrestle back Friday, starting at 3:15 p.m.

The good news is that all three All-Delcos are a win away from medaling.

Wrestling: Delco contingent brings experience to Hershey

HERSHEY — The three All-Delcos have been here before.

Reaching the palatial Giant Center is indeed a reward in itself for the countless hours of training, practice and competition that can be overwhelming for a teenage athlete trying to reach the pinnacle of his sport.

That Karon Lucas-Tillery of Penn Wood and Garnet Valley teammates and best friends John Dambro and Michael Marino completed the journey back to the PIAA Class AAA Tournament, which begins here Thursday at 4 p.m., is testament to their passion and commitment to be the best.

Twenty-nine athletes from Delaware County began last weekend with a chance to make this trip, yet only this trio of seniors’ medal hopes remain alive.

Their coaches welcomed the chance to reflect on the divergent roads that delivered them to the spot affectionately known as the Sweetest Place on Earth.

“When they come in as freshmen they think they know what it’s going to take to be successful,” Garnet Valley coach Rocco Fantazzi said of the ninth-graders he’s welcomed into the fold over the years.

“It’s tough to get them to understand that it may take two or three years to make it to this level. It definitely takes them time to buy into that realization. But both guys bought in and reached states as juniors. Now they’re seniors and seasoned veterans.”

Indoor Track: Strath Haven girls own 4 x 800 again

It’s been said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but gold isn’t a bad substitute.

Just ask Strath Haven’s Bri Irons, Jamie Kenney, Allie Wilson and Kristen Miller or Garnet Valley’s Liz McGroarty. They all claimed gold medals Saturday in the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association indoor state championships at Penn State.

Irons, Kenney, Wilson and Miller set the state meet record while winning the girls 4 x 800-meter championship, while McGroarty captured the open 800-meter title.

Those victories were part of a big day by Delco athletes. The Cardinal O’Hara boys finished second in the team standings, while Upper Darby and Strath Haven were fifth and seventh, respectively, on the girls side.

The 4 x 800 has been Strath Haven’s race the last few years. It was the third time in the last four years that the Panthers claimed the state title in the event. This time, they did it in grand fashion with a meet-record time of 9 minutes, 9.52 seconds.

The win in the 4 x 800 was the first of two relay medals for the Panthers. Kenney, Wilson and Miller teamed up with Ivy Jones to take second in the 4 x 400 (3:54.73).

McGroarty’s victory was a bit of a surprise. She was in the second of three heats, with the final heat being the seeded heat. Yet she went out and ran a personal best indoor time of 2:14.22 to win her first individual state tile.

McGroarty took charge midway through the second lap of her heat. She moved to the front and slowly pulled away to turn in the best indoor time of her career. With another heat, though, the senior had to sweat it out to see if that time would stand up for the gold medal.

It did. Central Bucks West Maddie Villalba gave it a go, winning the final heat, but her time (2:14.48) was only good enough for second.

McGroarty wasn’t the only Delco athlete to come home with gold. Upper Darby All-Delco Claudine Andre won the high jump with a leap of 5-4. It was the second medal of the day for the senior. She also was individual second in the long jump (18-½).

The Royals’ Ashli Cook placed fourth in the 400 (personal best 58.19 seconds), Ashley Rankine was seventh in the 60 dash (personal best 7.80), and they teamed with Shannon Birch and Khayla Williams for fifth place in the 4 x 200.

In the relay events, Penncrest (Alicia Collier, Briane Artis, Zoe Gable, Katie Arbogast) were seventh in the 4 x 200. Notre Dame (Sophia Recchilango, Julia Dambly, Katie Schneider, Jill Battista) took seventh in the 4 x 400.

Belfatto got Delco’s medal quest off to a good start early when he passed four runners in the final 200 meters to take second in the mile behind Tony Russell of West Chester Henderson. Russell just missed breaking the meet record with a time of 4:12.65. Belfatto crossed the finish line in 4:17.15, two-hundredths of a second in front of Ross Wilson of Council Rock North.

Smart was in the best race of the day. He crossed the finish line in 1:54.34 to break the county indoor record of 1:54.45 set by Sun Valley’s Chris Kessler in 2003. However, that was good enough for fourth place because of the runners who finished in front of him. Kyle Francis of Bensalem won the race with a state indoor record time of 1:50.55.

Smart wasn’t the only Delco runner to medal in the 800. Radnor’s Connor Holm took home a seventh-place medal with time of 1:56.88, his indoor best by more than three seconds. Holm ran the anchor leg on Radnor’s distance medley relay team that finished seventh. That quartet included Patrick Dwyer, Grant Gsell and Watson Hanson.

Mason Weh of Upper Darby took sixth in the 60 hurdles (8.13). He also teamed up with Greg Dix, Ramsey Kerkula and Jared Carter for sixth place in the 4 x 400.

Penncrest (Evan Emanuel, Brendan Hanna, Soham Kamat, Chris Kazanjian) finished sixth in the 4 x 800.

Girls Swimming: Resweber surprises herself with silver in 500 free

Ascending the second step of the medal podium, Frances Resweber looked a bit stunned. There was no surprise, however, on the face of her Strath Haven coach, Dina Dormer.

“Dina told me, ‘ Fran, you’re a 1:52 200 freestyler; there’s no reason you can’t break five minutes,’ Resweber said. “I told Dina, ‘ You’re nuts.”

Dormer may not have been perfectly accurate, but the gist of her faith showed through when Resweber pulled away from her heat in the 500 free and clocked in a time of 5:00.90, earning second place overall and a trip to states.

“Dina told me to take it out with that easy speed like I do by 200, and I just made my move late,’ Resweber said. “I was so excited to see the time. At first I thought, ‘ Aw I was so close to a 4:59.’ But it’s my best time by nine seconds, so I’m not going to allow myself to be upset about that.’

Resweber’s swim was the highlight of another fantastic day for the Panthers.

Summer Martin held serve in the final heat of the 100 free to finish fifth, her second individual event at states. Camille Jablonski went 1:06.04 in the 100 breaststroke, good for seventh and a very legitimate shot at an at-large bid in an event where 13 finishers were quicker than last season’s states cut.

To top it off, the 400 free relay team of Jablonski, Resweber, Martin and Katie Willis finished sixth in 3:33.48, over three seconds under the at-large cut for last season.

The result was a fourth-place finish in team standings, easily the highest in program history.

Girls Swimming: Zherka finishes Haverford’s victory in medley relay

PHILADELPHIA — As fast starts go, there was nothing that could rival what the Haverford girls medley relay at the District One Championships.

The Fords didn’t just win the event at La Salle University. They did so with a flourish, outracing North Penn in a compelling curtain-raiser to the afternoon session.

The team of Maddie Hart, Annie O’Brien, Emily Wolfe and Ilira Zherka posted a time of 1 minute, 46.27 seconds, getting to the wall .27 ticks ahead of North Penn, also well under the existing record. The mark that fell by the wayside dated to the 2011 team of Upper Dublin at 1:47.33.

The cut from their seed time was a remarkable 4.55 seconds. It was so monumental an improvement that it left those getting out of the water somewhat surprised.

“I didn’t expect that at all,” Hart said. “I’m just so excited. … I know even know how to put it into words. I don’t feel like it’s sunk in yet.”

The triumph was impressive in two regards. Not only was the time a drastic improvement on the record, but the Fords also had to wrestle the title away from North Penn in a pitched battle. The responsibility of bringing the race home fell to Zherka, a freshman.

“That last leg, I turned and looked at (North Penn anchor Leah Brown), and I was like, ‘oh my god, she’s right next to me,'” Zherka said. “So I decided to just stop looking and I stopped taking any breaths that last lap. At the end I just got my hand to the wall.”

Hart followed up by winning the 100 fly in 55.47, earning her second straight trip to states in the event.

Also joining the Fords at states will be the relay squad of Radnor, the team of Tatyana Smolyansky, Evie Cai, Heather McShea and Laura Packer taking the fifth and final automatic berth.

Swimming: Vannucci gives Ridley coach one last hurrah at states

Kurt Slenn’s tenure as the head coach of the Ridley boys swim team isn’t over just yet.

Slenn will have one more trip to Bucknell for the PIAA Championships, accompanying 200 individual medleyist Joe Vannucci, just the third Green Raiders swimmer ever to qualify for states.

Vannucci made the cut in the IM, his time of 1:57.63 earning the third-to-last at-large bid among the 16 non-automatic qualifiers statewide. Vannucci earned the 10th and final spot for District One in a historically fast event at this weekend’s championship meet.

Slenn, who is retiring this year after two decades at the helm, would’ve been headed to states anyway in his capacity as the girls assistant coach, accompanying a Ridley swimmer for a third straight year. This year, freshman Gab Rudy automatically qualified for the 100 breaststroke by finishing third at districts and added an at-large bid in the 200 IM after a sixth-place result.

For Slenn, though, it’s particularly special, given Vannucci’s stellar progress in his four years under his tutelage and the talented field he navigated to qualify.

“It’s tremendous to not only do it with such a deep field but to do it in the event that tests his ability as all around,’ Slenn said. “Joe coming into the program was a good swimmer with a definite weak point in breaststroke. At this point, I would not be surprised to know that he becomes a breaststroke specialist in college.’

Vannucci’s ability to earn a spot in the IM alleviates the disappointment of missing out on the 100 backstroke by one hundredth of a second. The psych sheets released Sunday are preliminary and could be amended should a swimmer drop an individual event to concentrate on a relay, but that possibility is remote.

Wrestling: Ridley’s Alkins, McCarthy advance to semifinals

POTTSTOWN — Fueled by the disappointment of how Ridley’s team dual season had unfolded, Lawrence Alkins brought resolve and a plan to take his opponent head-on into Pottstown’s Strom Gymnasium Friday night.

The plan worked and the inner strength that Alkins displayed earned the junior a berth in Saturday’s 182-pound semifinals of the Class AAA Southeast Regional wrestling tournament.

The top three finishers at each weight will head to Hershey for next week’s PIAA Tournament.

“I just wanted to come here with a good mindset and go full force for everybody who’s in my way,” Alkins said after dispatching Downingtown East’s Jason Gibson, 5-3, in a grueling quarterfinal.

“You can’t really think of anything else but winning,” he added. “You have to be very, very confident in yourself because anything can happen here. If you have any thoughts of losing, you might as well quit. So I went into my match smart and set up a plan and it worked out.”
Alkins will have company in Saturday’s semifinals, with teammate Donte McCarthy dominating his quarterfinal over West Chester Henderson’s Kyle Medrow, 11-5, at 120 pounds.

“It hasn’t been the best of years for Ridley wrestling, but we’re trying to make the most of this opportunity,” Alkins said. “Hopefully me and Donte to make it happen, because our teammates have been very supportive of us.”

Twenty other athletes from Delaware County were among the 126 wrestlers from 49 schools that filled the gym with non-stop action for more than 3½ hours.

District One-West champion teammates Michael Marino (120) and John Dambro (170) carried the standard for Garnet Valley, with each easily advancing to their respective semifinals — Marino with a 12-1 major decision and Dambro by pin in 1 minute, 56 seconds.

Ryan Dougherty of Penncrest bulled his way to the 152-pound semifinals with a third-period pin, Academy Park’s Samson Akporotu advanced to the semis at 160 with a 10-7 decision, and Karon Lucas-Tillery of Penn Wood punched his ticket to the semis with a 10-3 win at 195.

The night did not begin well for Central League champion Garnet Valley, which saw half of its four wrestlers relegated to the consolation round less than a half hour into the tournament.

The first Jaguar, sophomore Ben Tuohey, opened up the 126-pound bracket with a 4-3 loss to West Chester Henderson’s Joey Wilson. Moments later, 145-pounder Sean Lyons came up on the short end of an excruciatingly tough 1-0 loss to West Chester Rustin’s Thomas Hatzipavlides.

Upper Darby’s Anthony Petril, the first Delco wrestler to take the mat at 106, showed some spunk in a 5-3 opening win over Dylan Nuttall of Harry S. Truman. The Royals’ senior then had the misfortune of running into the top seed in the quarterfinals, where he was pinned in 2:46 by Avon Grove’s Edgar Garcia.

Nate Frantz of Strath Haven also lost his quarterfinal, and will oppose Petril in a second-round consolation Saturday.

Girls Basketball: Goldbach, Ireland lead Garnet Valley to win

While Garnet Valley’s girls basketball team wasn’t competing for a District One Class AAAA championship Friday night, the Jaguars were playing at home one final time.

The Jaguars had already locked up a spot in the state tournament earlier this week, so their meeting with Methacton was merely a warm-up game whose outcome would determine which team earned the ninth seed in next week’s state tournament.

Garnet Valley could have taken things lightly, but the Jags don’t do business that way. Macy Goldbach and Jordan Ireland both scored 12 points to lead their team to a 47-41 victory over Methacton.Garnet Valley meets District 12 champion Archbishop Carroll in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAAA tournament next week.

“It was a good first quarter, but the game was pretty even the rest of the way,” Garnet Valley coach Joe Woods said. “Their big girl (Jordan) Carroll did very well and gave us problems the entire game. She scored most of her 11 points in the second half. It was just another real tough game.”

Haley Warden added eight points, 10 rebounds and seven steals for the Jags (26-2), while Sam Tomasetti had nine rebounds to go with her four points.

The Jags, who were the No. 2 seed in the district tournament, played five straight home games, including three in playback competition.

“We feel very fortunate to have that opportunity,” Woods said. “The crowds here were great.”
