League History
The Central Athletic League is comprised of schools in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties. Member schools are Conestoga, Garnet Valley, Harriton, Haverford, Lower Merion, Marple Newtown, Penncrest, Radnor, Ridley, Springfield, Strath Haven and Upper Darby.
The Central League started in 1967. The schools were: Conestoga, Harriton, Haverford, Marple, Lower Merion, Penncrest, Radnor, Springfield and Upper Darby. William Bean, Lower Merion principal, was the first president. Mary Carter, Radnor’s principal, was the secretary and Springfield principal, R.K. Smith was the treasurer.
In 1969, Harriton joined the Suburban 3 League and Ridley was added. The number still stayed at nine teams. In 1983, Strath Haven was added to give the Central League 10 teams. Then in 2008, Harriton came back in with the addition of Garnet Valley. This brought the League total to 12 teams, which is the current lineup.
