SPRINGFIELD — What happens when the team that won the only PIAA softball championship in Delaware County history returns the next season? There must be a ton of pressure to live up to those lofty expectations, right?
Not at Springfield, where the Cougars are ready to begin the long road back to the top. While coach Todd Odgers said goodbye to some valuable departing seniors, including All-Delco Lauren Scarpato and Kaity Baumann, the Cougars have an air of confidence that comes with being reigning state champs. The team that went 23-4 last spring doesn’t plan on being distracted.
The PIAA spring sports season begins Friday, although the threat of inclement weather could put a damper on opening day. The Cougars are scheduled to play a nonleague game at Kennett. For All-Delcos Courtney Scarpato and Tori DePietro, Springfield’s lethal 1-2 punch as pitchers and shortstops, the song remains the same: Go out and prove yourself all over again.
