Ridley’s Jesufifunmi Olugbenga nips friendly rivals in Delcos high jump

YEADON — Jesufifunmi Olugbenga is accustomed to busy days. Wednesday was a different type of busy.

The morning started with a senior speech to sophomores and freshmen at Ridley. It included pictures with family as he signed his national letter of intent to Penn State.

And it wrapped up at Penn Wood’s Rap Curry Athletic Complex, where the normally busy Olugbenga relished a chance to home his attention on an event that doesn’t usually get primary focus.

Olugbenga won the high jump at the Delco Championships, one of three to clear 6-4, edging out Noah Wampole of Radnor and Episcopal Academy’s Joachim Johnson on fewer misses.

“It was a pretty eventful day already,” Olugbenga said. “I feel like I tried to come out here today and prove why I’m a Penn State commit and show them what I have.”

To be clear, Olugbenga has plenty. But it’s normally the 400 meters, in which he finished second at Delcos last year, and the high jump that are his specialties. He had to breeze through qualifying in the former Wednesday, posting the top time of 48.27, while the long jump and 4 x 400 are Saturday when the meet concludes at Upper Darby.

So with a chance to devote attention to the high jump, Olugbenga went for it.

“There’s a lot more commitment to it,” Olugbenga said. “Usually, I’m out of my head at that point in time and my mind’s everywhere, like I can’t do this. But today, I was like, there’s no excuses.”
