LOWER MERION — Springfield coach Tom Lemieux isn’t shy about his expressing his thoughts, to or about his team. So the excitement he showed Sunday afternoon when his No. 4 seeded Cougars downed No. 5 Spring-Ford, 9-8, in the District One quarterfinals to earn a berth in the PIAA Tournament was genuine and profound.
“If you would’ve told me two months ago that we were going to states, I probably would’ve laughed at you,’ he said. “They’ve surprised me, they’ve surprised everybody, and I couldn’t be happier for this group of kids.’
Springfield’s growth brings them within two wins of a district title, a path that will go through Central Bucks East Tuesday night at West Chester Henderson. Faceoff is at 6.
