The high school sports season officially ended Saturday with the PIAA lacrosse championship games, so there’s no better time to acknowledge one Delaware County school that did a lot of winning in the spring.

Marple Newtown’s spring sports teams experienced an unprecedented level of success, capturing three District 1 titles and one PIAA championship across baseball, boys lacrosse and softball.

The Tigers’ boys lacrosse squad celebrated its second consecutive PIAA Class 2A championship with an 11-9 victory over Mars Area High School Saturday, just a couple of weeks after the program captured its second District 1 trophy in three years.

Dominance was the hallmark of the boys’ playoff run, outscoring opponents by a staggering 85-24 margin until the state final. The nine goals allowed against Mars were the most the Tigers conceded in any playoff game this season, highlighting the crucial saves made by standout goalie Marco D’Alicandro. The lacrosse team ended its season with a 22-3 record.

Under the tutelage of head coach Toby MacCart, in his first full season, the Marple baseball team overcame the odds to win the District 1 Class 5A championship. Entering the tournament as the No. 8 seed in a 12-team field, the Tigers upset last year’s district champions, Strath Haven, and defeated Radnor in the final. Sophomore ace Aidin Curran and seniors Paul DeFruscio, Aiden Pearson, and Bennett Cox played pivotal roles. The Tigers’ remarkable run was halted in the first round of states.

Marple Newtown’s softball team claimed its first district championship since 2006. The Tigers’ victory over West Chester Rustin in the championship game was highlighted by a dramatic unassisted double play by shortstop Amanda O’Keefe to end the game. Their season concluded with a loss at home in the first round of the state tournament.
