Girls Basketball: Marple Newtown puts on a show of Power

MARPLE — Saturday’s championship win at the Marple Newtown Holiday Tournament will go down as one of the most memorable in the career of senior guard Rylee Power. The two-sport All-Delco could breathe a sign of relief when it was over. Though overtime was required, Marple Newtown pulled out a 45-43 upset of Bishop Shanahan. Considered by one publication a top-10 team in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Bishop Shananhan entered the tournament finale with eight consecutive victories to start the season. Last year, the Eagles had their way with the Tigers at the same tournament. So, what does a win against one of the top programs in the Ches-Mont League and maybe the area do for a team like Marple Newtown (6-2)?

“I guess it’s a statement,’ Power said. “We can compete with any team.’

It’s certainly a good measuring stick for MN, which has won four in a row. Power and senior forward Carley Hamilton were named to the all-tournament team, and Power went home with the MVP trophy. She scored 16 of her team-high 21 points and made all 10 of her foul shots (10-of-13) after halftime. Trailing by one point at intermission, it was time for Power to take control. The 6-2 Hamilton, who can be penciled in for a double-double in points and rebounds on most nights, was hobbled by a leg injury and clearly not 100 percent. Hamilton finished with 10 points, five blocks and three rebounds, but she needed help. It was up to Power to get the Tigers going after the Eagles scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take an eight-point advantage, their largest of the game.

“We needed her to score more,’ coach Mike Colgan said. “We’ve had a lot of balance the last couple games. We got 31 from Power and Hamilton and 19 from the rest of the team (in Friday’s win over Phoenixville). The last three games, we’ve had good balance with other kids getting in the scoring column. That’s what we need to do, because today was only the third time Power didn’t see a box-and-one. She’s going to see that all year and she’s going to get her points eventually, but she needed to step up in the second half. The pace was a little slow in the first half … but I wanted her to take off a little bit. Good things happen when she has the ball in her hands.’
