The following Central League players have been named to the All Delco teams.
FIRST TEAM
Marina Zhang, Garnet Valley: A freshman, Zhang teamed with senior Emma Blake to reach the PIAA Class AAA doubles quarterfinals before falling, 6-3, 6-4, to Laurel Shymansky and Amanda Nord of Fox Chapel … Zhang and Blake are the first Garnet Valley players to make it to states since Kristin Schappell capped her run of four straight PIAA doubles appearances by teaming with sister Melissa 10 years ago … Zhang and Blake reached the District One doubles final before falling to the Abington pair of Molly Bair and Amirah Salim, 6-1, 6-2 … Reached the finals of the Central League Singles Tournament before falling, 6-1, 6-4, to Harriton’s Rachel Benstock, who was also the only player to defeat Zhang in a regular-season dual match … Reached the quarterfinals at the District One Class AAA Singles Tournament … Helped the Jaguars finish 6-5 in the always-tough Central League. “I’ve played in USTA events by myself since I was 9 years old, but I really enjoyed being part of a team,’ Zhang said. “Having people cheering for you helps you play better.’ … Named to the All-Central first team in singles … Learned the game from her father … Works on her game at Penn Oaks … Her best summer was two years ago when she got inside the top 100 nationally in the 12s.
